Bananas Grow from Flowers

a few of you asked if our banana trees have bananas
Yes, they do.
The summer of 2007, one of the banana pods, ended up at eye level. I had never seen bananas grow from flower to fruit. these photos document the growth. Enlarge the above photo, and use you zoom tool to see the incredible fruit.

If you enlarge this and zoom you can see at the end of the banana what is left of the flower.

Above photo shows how the pod opens and little flowers come out, each flower turns into a banana

Below is how it looks when finished.

these photos were taken with my Kodak Easy share, i wish I had the Rebel when it was blooming.
Tomrrow I will show the flowers up close

Again...Nature! Incredible!! I didn't know that. I was in the grocery store a few days ago and they had little mini bananas. I didn't get any but I was intrigued at them.

Thanks for documenting the growth of bananas for us. I've seen bananas on trees before, but I haven't seen how they develop from the flower.
Thanks again for the education.

You ARE Kilauea II!!! Seriously. That header, I didn't think it could get better than yesterday's, but those shadows!! The colors! I have NEVER seen anything like the banana plant!! I had no idea!! Cannot WAIT to show Phil!! You had these pictures since 2007, and have not posted them till NOW??!! How can you ever say you've run out of ideas with things like this laying around??? How long do the bananas last, do they bloom all year? Do you and Bob have free bananas all year? Do bugs or bees or butterflies like it? You could do a post of just the insects that come to it!! You could do a post of you and Bob eating it!! This is more interesting to me than the pineapple. You could do a post of it's trunk!! You should read the list of the many things bananas do for your health, It's incredible, you should look it up and post THAT, too!!! Hmm...come to think of it, nevermind, I'll be on the next plane down!

My dad loves bananas. In fact, after each meal, no matter how full he is.. he heads for the bananas. How interesting. I didn't know how the flower looked or how the bananas grew.

Wonderful shots Sandra. That's the flower I remember from my childhood. I am still amazed that my dad grew bananas in North Georgia. I do remember the bananas he grew tasted delicious. Looking forward to your close ups of the flowers.

Wow. I had no idea! I eat bananas every single day and it never even entered my head to think about what they look like at the flower stage!!! I also had no idea that there are banana trees in Florida. I'm not sure what I'm most amazed at just now. Your amazing pictures or my own ignorance...

OMGosh- these are gorgeous!! Luv luv your photos here- I think you caught it at the right time because I've seen this Sandra..hmm? Except for the top- the red and that, but nope, not in a row and not like those flowers. I think this is just a different type.
Woe..you have a winner here! It's such a splash with your pretty green background-

This is amazing! I had no idea that bananas grew out of flowers. Makes sense since most fruit does. I've just never spent much time around growing bananas! I think the photos are great no matter what camera you used.

Best,
Bonnie
