Ringling Circus Posters

Posters were the best advertising method before Television, Internet, Cell phones, email.
Today's circus Trivia is from  About.com  where I learned many common phrases we use today came from the Circus
“Toss your hat into the ring” came from the Circus in 1916, when President
Wilson tossed his hat into the center ring to show he’d run again.

“Hold your horses” comes from the old Circus street parade days, when the locals were warned to “hold their horses” because the elephants scared them.

“Get on the bandwagon” comes from a presidential candidate’s visit to the Circus. The candidate? Zachary Taylor in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1848.

This poster above is from 1944, the year I waa born. whooo ha

Little Jimmy, Little Billy, and Jimmy's father were at an Art Museum. Little Jimmy was looking at a picture of someone in a carriage being pulled by a horse.

Little Jimmy brought his father over to look at the picture, and he asked his father, "Daddy, what is this?"

His dad replied, "Why, that is a horse-drawn carriage!"

Little Jimmy excitedly ran over to Little Billy, brought him back to the picture, and said, "Billy, a horse drew this picture!!"

I love the evolution of simple sayings. I just never understand how they get so popular...as in 'hold your horses'.

My favorite is the ballerina on top of that horse on her tippy-toe. Makes you wonder if some woman acutauuly did that, I think not.

Sandra..enjoyed these old posters!! So you were born in 44? I love trains and they will always remind me of the small eletric ones my brothers would get for Christmas! They'd set the whole track on a large table in our den! Those trains and pieces slowly faded away into closets and disappeared with the seasons. I love the claw foot tub and the jokes (smile)-:)

HI Sandra, I love the circus posters. I remember the first one for some reason... But --I love the Buffalo Bill one. Don't remember much about Tom Mix. Wonder how I missed him since I loved Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Rex Allen, Lash LaRue, etc...

Thanks so much for sharing.
Hugs,
Betsy

Love the circus posters. They're so colorful. Makes you feel all excited about the circus coming to town. I haven't been to one in years, I wonder when the next one will be coming through

These are so brilliantly colored and cheerful...
It is a shame that Woodrow Wilson threw his hat into the ring to run again... his administration was the REAL circus. ;)

The posters are all gorgeous, the bright colors would have certainly captured the interest and imagination of all who saw them. The clown one is a little unnerving if you have ever read Stephen King's "It".
