Survivors!

I was soooo bad this week. I ATE A CAN OF VIENNA SAUSAGE... left over from last year Hurricane Supplies. we have to recycle our Hurricane What If cabinet each year. Food that can  be opened and consumed is the object of the supplies.

While I was scoffing up the fatty little pudgy devils, we discussed the fact we survived Vienna Sausage and Saltines WITH salt on them. and that led us to we survived chicken, steak, liver, pork chops fried in CRISCO Lard and a that lead to yoohoo and Nehi drinks. and Coke and Pepsi and RC Cola, with sugar, real sugar.

one thing leads to another so here is yet another MadSnapper Trivia

When I was a child, on our 12 hour drive from Savannah to Sloans Valley Ky, our picnic lunch was often a can of Vienna’s and saltines, potato chips, chocolate chip cookies from home, and if we were lucky we could choose from Nehi Orange or grape or Yoohoo, Pepsi or Coke. AND if we were lucky, momma bought a small jar of REAL Mayo and a package of bologna and white bread and we made sandwiches. We ate them on the hood of the 53 Pontiac, and that was covered with a red and white table cloth. The biggest treat was to open a can of pineapple and have mayo and pineapple sandwiches.... What are things you ate as a child you no longer eat.

Lovely post, and it's great to have this 'survival' kit's :) I bet the sausages's were tasty. Boy, does it feel good to be off..I still woke up silly early though.
Have a great day!

Those little cans of Vienna sausage were always in my earthquake supplies in AK. I also had canned tuna, mayo and of course saltines.

Your mama and mine thought along the same lines for picnic food. Bologna sandwiches were common on our weekend drives. The pineapple and mayo sandwiches were my favorite too. I haven't had any of those things in years.

We ate fried Spam with ketchup as an entree or just plain old Spam out of the can as sandwich meat. Spam has made a comeback, although I can't bring myself to eat it. My 91-year-old mom still eats Vienna sausages. Yuck!

LOL! I used to eat all of the above growing up and now I wouldn't touch any of them with a yardstick. Funny.

My brother and I loved pineapple sandwiches, too. I remember having mayo and black pepper sandwiches - THAT WOULD KILL ME NOW!

There isn't much that I ate back then that I don't or won't eat now. But, bologna was a regular thing in our house and I always ate my sandwich with ketchup.

You take me back in time with the memory of pineapple sandwiches and had to have a slice of cheese on it.

A pot of those big fat white lima beans cooked ham or bacon, poured over some cornbread and a slice of Vidalia onion was many a Sunday dinner.

Grandmom's shortbread cookies that were dunked in powdered sugar. YUM.

I guess I still eat most of the things I enjoyed as a child. I do not however eat raw wieners. We used to buy a package of wieners and and a loaf of white bread when we went to the city and had cold hotdogs. Not so appetizing any more.

I have to have a can of Vienna sausage now and then. They are sooo not good for us, though. My grandparents called them vi-eeners.

Hey, I think that sounds good.... A mayo and pineapple sandwich!!!

But it would have to be a Miracle Whip and pineapple sandwich, for me.

And the red/white table cloth on the hood, sounds like "Americana"!!! :-)

Betcha' Bob wishes he had that 53 Pontiac!!! ,-)

Oh my goodness! I'd entirely forgotten about pineapple and mayo sandwichs! And I still break out a can of spam every once in a while. I slice it and fry it, fry us up and egg and make a sandwich with it! We still picnic off the tailgate of hubby's truck when we're out rambling on back roads.

I love your header picture too.

And I understand what you ate there.
When I was little we ate hotdogs and bologna with mayo too - I couldn't eat it if I hate to now. Well unless I was starving.

Love, sandie

I can't even remember how many years ago it's been since I had some of those little Vienna sausages. My son ate them as a snack when he was little.

Great question, Sandra! I liked crab as a child, and I don't ever eat it now (unless I'm in a very good restaurant that makes exceptionally good crab cakes with a remoulade sauce). And I don't think I could bring myself to eat a sardine, something I enjoyed as a child. I've never eaten a Vienna sausage--my mother never bought those.

Too funny nothing better than vienna sausage and crackers with a cold orange Nehi. My daughter loved vienna sausage when she was a wee one.
Your header is beautiful
We hope your g.b. ultrasound was ok

Those pineapple and mayo sandwiches sound interesting! I used to love banana sandwiches and picnic sandwiches were usually filled with fish paste from a jar or tinned meat. My Grandma baked a lot and made jam suet pudding and custard and rice pudding. Spam fritters and chipped potatoes were fried in lard. It wasn't until I met my future Italian husband in the 60s that I started cooking the Mediterranean way.

My family, too, traveled with picnic supplies. Often that included mayo, boiled eggs, bacon she had fried up ahead of time, white bread and fresh homegrown tomatoes. We, too, would find a shady spot and she would turn those ingredients into memorable sandwiches. She would bring sweetened tea or KoolAid. Another family introduced us to the pineapple sandwiches, with a slice of american cheese and ham, as after-church fare when my family joined them in what they called maneuvers, extended drives through unexplored back roads of Mississippi or Louisiana.

Thanks for inviting us along on that drive down memry lane.

I will do that, one of theses days...I'll try to forget the cholesterol..LOL

I don't drink sodas, not with sugar and not diet. Also no candy bars, but my husband and I still have Johnsonville bratwurst occasionally. I grew up in "the bratwurst capital of the world". I used to like Vienna sausages too.

I have never had a Mayo pineapple sandwich...I use to eat fried bologna. I think that the bologna with mayo sandwiches tasted so much better when I was a kid. I also truly enjoyed ground bologna sandwiches. Goodness.... I ate a lot of bologna...I think it charming your mom put a red and white table cloth on the hood of the car...:)

Sandra, great header and funny, funny story(as always). We really didn't take any family trips when I was growing up, which may be WHY I am making up for that with our current road trips :-) I have never eaten Vienna sausages or even Spam!

Wow, I guess it would be vienna sausages. We used to fry up bologna and slap it on white bread with mayo and cheese. Man, it was so delicious. Come to think of it we don't buy white bread or bologna anymore. I'm putting it on my shopping list now. :)

I don't know where I have been, but I never heard of pineapple and mayo sandwiches before.
My Dad liked all kinds of different things and was adventuresome so we should have had this in our diet.
I remember my boys liking Meat sticks when they were toddlers, now I think they were a dumbed down version of vienna sausages.

There is not very much that I don't still fix every now and then...but oh how my attitude has changed....I need to do a post about that alone. I have been meaning to for a long time...
