Peril's of Old Age - Re-Post April 2010

re-creation in order to tell my story
Partial Re-Post from 2010

As I sat  bloggin, I realized I had been hearing the sound of running water for a while, that sub-conscious hearing without hearing.

Dragging myself away from this screen, I went to the kitchen (see above photo) and their to my wondering eyes (I had my glasses ON) was the dog water bowl, perched on the divider to the sink, the water merrily running over the sides, our very on water fountain created from a dog water bowl.

Hubby is no where in sight. I know I did not do this (at least I THINK I did not do this) so I turn it off and go to the backyard and there he is playing ball with Jake.

I said " did you fill the water bowl for the dogs?" he says "What?" I say the water bowl, did you fill it? He says What are you talking about? "

He fed the dogs, it ran while he put the food out, it ran while they ate and then he went out leaving it running.

Old Age - MEMORY LOSS.

Men seem to lose their hearing (bob is almost deaf and could not hear the water running to remind his memory to turn it off)

and women seem to lose their sight (I could HEAR the water but have trouble seeing it clearly). this is a good thing because other than losing hearing and sight we lose MEMORY Function.

The problem is, that we are both equal on the forgetful memory thingy which is not good.

Typical conversation:

"Have you seen my glass of water?"

"No, did you see my coffee cup? I just had it a minute ago" *

"Where are my gray shorts, the one I cut grass in?"

"Do you have something in the microwave?"

"No, Why?"
"Because it is beeping."

OH, I forgot I was heating my coffee."*

I found my coffee cup....

This doesn't just happen to people with older age. My sister could tell tales :D

In our house it's the opposite. He can't see, I can't hear. Wade's always asking me if I have something in the microwave :) As for memory Wade says his is perfect although he frequently remembers things a whole different way than I do

Hello Sandra, I can not talk. Same thing happens at our house. It is good to be able to laugh at ourselves. Enjoy your Tuesday!

Old age plus memory loss, is inevitable. Having said that memory loss happens to even the younger ones. Best wishes!

You are right - my sight is not what it used to be and Rick has left the car running and got out of it twice! I looked at him shocked - how can you do that? He has also forgot to put the little gas top on twice!!

Sounds very familiar to me. I cannot boil eggs anymore unless I stand and watch them! God help us.....

Oh we can tell it all. With you girl.

You hit the nail perfect Sandra.

And it is the silly things but it can be terrible drastic.

My hubby years ago had the habit of filling up the sink with dish soap. For the dishes. Of course I do them. No big deal. We don't use dish washer for just a couple of items. The two of us. I can do them quicker then loading them in dish washer.

Walks away hubby and I hear water running.

Go to the sink. Hands over my mouth. You know that women action. OH NO.

The soap suds is over flowing onto the floor.Like we need a bucket of soap suds.

Well that day he got all the floors washed right to the back hall.

The hearing and the not seeing or not paying any attention what one does and walks away. It happens.

Great blog.

Oh boy, does that sound like our house...
We are forever doing the kind of things you wrote about.
All you can do is laugh!!
Yes it definitely was a long drive to Oregon but we had to go to deal with some family issues.
Family ....we really do a lot for it.
Worth it though.

I hear you!!!

We both spend more time looking for things than actually using an item.

Oh boy, at least the sink wasn't plugged and it didn't overflow.

you two crack me up! we all do silly things around here and we keep the laughter going! my husband isn't as silly as I am, but I need some giggles daily!

This is too funny. We are exactly the same.

I can remember when I was a child, my grandma was nearly deaf. We always said it was a good thing she could not hear grandpa clicking his false teeth continuously!

Aha! The elusive coffee cup. I often find my daughter's in hers when I'm visiting. She warms it, but gets sidetracked by something else.

Good GRIEF! You could have recorded a conversation between PH and I...I mean you wrote EXACTLY one of our daily conversations..usually in the morning.but it goes on constantly. I had to read this to him..he giggled..and since he couldn't remember that I was reading it off my computer, written by another blogger (which I had JUST told him) he asked if I had written that in my post. I mentally just threw up my hands...and so I am writing this to you. Hope I don't forget to hit "publish"...

So far we are still doing fairly well in the hearing and seeing things, but Pat always complains that I do not speak LOUD enough for him to hear them we are in the car. I tell him, he just isn't hearing and then SHOUT the next time, We no longer have a microwave, so I won't be forgetting bout my coffee cup there.

It can happen to younger people too but I guess it certainly does not get any better as we get older. I realise for example that I had better not leave the kitchen while something is "going on" in the kitchen (like something boiling etc) But of course sometimes I forget my own rules! ;)

Thanks for making me laugh this morning, Sandra. You could be on TV and call it Living with Bob and Sandra. ;))

Hubby and I are in that place too but we have Buddy who though Down syndrome and only almost 42 has a sharp memory to guide us when we get messed up! He works at it . The other day neither of us could find a new fridge water filter. The next day Buddy placed it on the kitchen counter. He searched and founf it. We had not been able to retrace where we had stored it

So far my hearing and vision are still pretty darn good. Hubby not so much. Now my memory is another thing but I think that's because I just have so much going on all the time that I tend to get side-tracked. I loose my coffee all the time!

priceless! And comforting to know we aren't alone in our efforts to laugh and keep going.

I loved this. You painted such a great picture of the two of you! I read it while I was on my trip and I didn't even have to read it all the way through again before I started chuckling.
