Blackberries Justified...

At heart I am a died-in-the-wool tightwad (cheapskate, penny pincher, miser, scrooge).

I stood looking at the box of Black Berries all the way from Guatemala on my Saturday AM weekly shopping trip. I put them in the basket returned them to the display, TWICE.

After I unpacked them, I opened the box and started to count them. Hubby watched from the breakfast bar with his eyebrows raised when I reached for the calculator.

"Just how much did you pay for those berries?"

"Why do you ask?" she says

My fingers danced on the calculator and I replied
"9 cents each"
there were 42 of them and I paid 3.78 for the box. (they did come a long way from home, probably charged for shipping)
hubbies eyebrows went higher...
 and he said
"What?!!!"
(did I mention we share tightwadism)

NOTE: the original post was from 2010, now that little berry cost 13 cents each

Everything turned out fine, I remembered the next day was my birthday and reached in the drawer and
"voila, a birthday cake with no fat" and my blackberries are justified.

As a little girl, I used to pick them during recess when we lived in the AR Ozarks. One of my fav berries, but not at 13 cents each. Great pics btw!

I'm laughing like crazy over this because that sounds so much like something I would do. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I might have sprung for the 9 cents a piece but I don't know about 13....lol

Good morning, Sandra. I think every item we buy in the food store has gone up in price the last few years. Some increases have been less than a year. I like your birthday cake. Happy Monday, enjoy your new week!

MY WORD WHEN YOU DO THE MATH THEY ARE FOR SURE GOLD.
I LOVE IT A BDAY CAKE W/ NO CALORIES AND LOTS OF ANTI OXIDANTS!!
OF COURSE WE LOVE HOW YOUR MIND WORKS. I have struggled with the cost of non essentials too!!

Nope! No tightwads in this house especially when it comes to food. If you ate them and enjoyed them, they were worth every penny.

Best,
Bonnie

i eat fresh berries every day, sometimes twice a day. i usually favor raspberries but occasionally have blueberries or blackberries instead. they are my one splurge. i don't do fast food, starbucks, don't like to clothes shop or anything. figure i can do fresh berries for my very own well-being. :)

so happy birthday to you every day!

I do the same thing with paying the high prices for fresh fruit. I laugh because I never think twice about the cost of an ice cream cone etc.

Aren't you the clever one to make the berries into a cake? ;))

You should see Canada's prices. You would scream if you lived here. We have to look for bargains for sure.
And reduced things.

I too picked them when I was a little girl the berries you have and goose berries at our cottage.

Then on Saturdays . I picked strawberries and made a cent a box. Then at cottage I used to go in the creek and pick water cress. Do you have watercress. I love that.

It is expensive now. It has a bitter taste but in a tomato sandwich it is delicious or cheese along with it.

Then after school I picked my Moms red currants and white which I despised. She made red currant pie.

Dad loved it. Those were the good old days when my Mom had a green finer and could plant and it grew like Jack the Bean stock.

Happy Birthday! Enjoy.

Oh, goodness, we share the same gene...I just wonder if I would have thought to count them and do the math that way.

On the other hand, I thought you were going to say you bought them because you couldn't resist photographing them.

I think that sometimes it's best not to figure out cost per item. I love raspberries and I know they are very expensive, but occasionally,I try not to look at the price and just enjoy a tray full.

I like the way you think! Hope you had a great birthday. That's a lovely Depression glass bowl you displayed them in.
