Question for dog owners

Jake has played chase the tennis ball for 11 years, he is part Boxer and is now having hip problems. He always ran full tilt on the concrete deck. Now he can't. We play soft and easy, with Mommy throwing because Daddy can't throw a underhanded SOFT throw... Jake can only run in dirt/grass and not full tilt and jump in air and grab... He is like Mommy now, struggles to get up, stiff but ok once he moves around.
Games anyone? NON active games for an Active Pup

Do any of you have any ideas how an active dog can play without being active? he wants to play, I need ideas. We do tug a rope, and 3 easy rolls of the tennis ball, walking around the block...

I have no ideas except walking. It does you both good. Love the red shoes and blue lead shot.

Hello, great action shots of Jake. It would be hard to stop a dog from playing. Maybe Diane has a great idea, more exercise by walking. Happy Monday, enjoy your new week!

I think you are doing it.

Great shots.

I think you are doing all the right things. Walking is probably the best for you both. So sorry you both are in pain.

Mental exercises help wear you out without being as physically active! Try some of the interactive puzzle toys. Or make your own where you show him a treat and then hide it under one of a set of plastic cups or something.

Jake is a beautiful dog. What does your Vet say. Do they give suggestions for dogs with the hip problems?

Did you see the commercial where the dog is small a puppy. Then he grows bigger and can still get in the Van. Then near the end. The dog has grey mouth whiskers and by now the lad is older. Sort of sad.

Perhaps Jake can follow the hide and seek ideas and guessing games.

I sent you an email with a video. What I seen for myself to share with you. It may be not be your cup a tea but was interesting for me to watch then show you.

Your blessed you have a pool or can go to the Gym pool.

Water exercise is much easy on your joints and muscles. I am told.

Cute, cute, cute pictures! I don't know any games for a dog other than what you are doing right now, they sound like a lot of fun. Not sure how I would feel if I had a neighbor next door with a rooster :) You will be seeing more of the one in my baseball quote as he and his ladies were at a living museum I went to recently.

I wonder if it can be helped with just keeping his mind busy, like burying dog treats in a toy where he has to really work to get them out? I'm sorry about this, and don't really have any great ideas. :-( What a great dog, though, what a sweet fella.

Our lab has hip dysplasia... She swims almost daily and that has helped a LOT! She is 9 years old and since we got a new pup about 4 months ago, she seems to have a new lease (leash ;) ) of life...

Ps read his tale... He is champion!

Looks like you have a lot of great suggestions!
We also thing some type of puzzle toy, along with your continued "soft throw" fetch would be a great solution!

I can't seem to come up with any other ideas for you but I would think that walking is a great way to exercise his hips. I guess he was never a swimmer??

I have nothing other than what everyone else suggested and what you're already doing. Have you googled it to see what pops up?

Darn, I wish I could think of something original!
Does Jake watch the television at all? One of our 'girls' is fascinated by it; the other, not at all.

If I had to vote, I'd agree with what the others said about the interactive Kong balls. Jake's a lucky fellow to have such caring parents. :)

I'd say just walking is best. Just like when we get old, we can no longer run or jog, so we walk because it is good exercise but it is as hard on our joints as running or jogging. I'm sure that as long as he is with you, he is happy.

Jake is a beautiful dog! I don't have a dog, so I have no suggestions, but he sounds a lot like me. I have a couple of pairs of those same shoes in different colors. They are so comfortable!

I have no ideas, but that Kong thingy may work. A good walk to tire him out may be a good thing too. See how creative I am.....

Oh, your shoes and Jake's leash is so much cleaner than mine and Skabenga's! Great shot of these items. I agree with Diane, just keep walking him and do underhand soft throws as you are. Jo

I read through all of these and can come up with nothing new. But Otti used to love those Kong things...

I wish I had new computer for both of us. I know one of these days this one is going to totally die. about 3 weeks ago, it would shut down about once a day, then it had not did that again, till the other morn, the screen was black...I had to hold down the on button till it shut down. And it did start up again when I turned it on, but I had my doubts.
