Memory Lane

It doesn't take much to send me down memory lane these days.. OLD age You KNOW?

Karen wrote this comment on my Pitcher Memories post. I can just picture you enjoying the breeze while swinging on the porch. Lots of memories. It's nice that you have the beautiful keepsake. (I always wanted red shoes and a red purse when I was little!= but Mother thought black patent leather was what I needed!)

Karen,   I had Church Shoes and School Shoes.. Black Patent/Saddle Shoes. Never pretty. I had school clothes and one new church dress every Easter.

My first REAL job, was Sept 5th of 1962,  I graduated from high school the summer of 1962. I found work but had to wait until my 18th birthday to start at Aetna Finance as a credit checker.

The red shoes in above photo came out of my first pay check of $85.00. My mother had a fit because I paid over 20.00 for them. I added a suit like the one above and a dress like below. Use your imagination and add the skirt in the top square to the dress on the right, put red trim and a pocket on it like the lower square and you have the Vintage grey and white seersucker dress I bought. Add a red plastic belt with buckle.

I still pay the price of walking to the bus, from bus to job, from job to bus and home again in those red shoes. I also had them in bone, black and white WITH matching outfits. Poor Mother and Daddy. They let me live rent free and watched me squander my pay on all this..

I spent my whole paycheck the first two weeks on shoes and these two outfits. I continued to buy red shoes and owned all the red ones at the top of this post at one time in my life.

While buying clothes and shoes I bought a 1956 Chevy 2 door. Daddy walked with me into a bank and signed his signature along with mine and we walked out the door with $500 cash and a payment booklet with my name on it. Only $50 per month, and gas was 50 cents a gallon. LOTS left for shoes

I found all this by  searching for vintage 60's. Imagine my shock when I found the TENT dress pattern of the dresses I wore in the 70's.

Long live the tent dress! I had the cutest one in shades of blue paisley. Bought in a DRUG STORE! Yes, back then drug stores even had clothes, and cute ones at that.I had the red shoes of course. And pink ones and bone ones. Once I started working, I could buy any kind I liked. A story I will never forget is about a pair of yellow shoes that were like ballet flats. Thin soled and soft, they came in a clear case folded up. All the adults hated them, so they must have been a present from going to the doctor or something. I never got to wear them, only the hated saddle shoes. One morning I came downstairs ready for school with the yellow shoes on. It was RAINING. I told my mom I was wearing them. I defied her. She chased me up the steps, cornered me, and gave me a whooping. Right in front of my friend who had come to walk to school with me. Once I started working, I bought a whole wardrobe of shoes and matching purses. So that is MY shoe story. you and I both worked while we lived at home, and could buy whatever clothes we wanted.

I have never owned a pair of red shoes. I sure enjoyed your memories and the photos. When I was 18 or so, I found a YELLOW pair of heels to match a suit I had!!! Crazy of me to buy a pair of shoes that I only had one outfit to match! lol

I don't think I've ever owned a pair of red shoes. I did however have a pair of those Dr. Scholls that are in the middle of the top picture.
I squandered a lot of my early paychecks on clothes too. I started working (part time jobs) when I was 13. With working papers you could do that. I remember wanting a pair of pants that my father wouldn't give me the money for so I saved my lunch money for weeks and used it to buy them.

Good morning, great memories. I like the shirt dresses, they seem to be popular now too. I used to love the Dr. Scholls sandals. Some of my first part time jobs were right after school and I went to work in my catholic school uniform. Have a happy Monday and new week ahead!

Sandra what great memories of years gone by. You know I love those red shoes.
100 years ago I was shopping for red shoes, sales person approached me I asked if she had red shoes...you know what she said to me, "ladies don't wear red shoes"! I love red always have but a tiny piece of me wonders if that sales person lit a fire under my hidden rebellious streak.
I was embarrassed. If someone said that to me 10 years later I would have jumped on them like white on rice.

what fun memories. I started working when I was 14 on the weekends and full time in the summer. I bought my first car for $600 from my parents when I was 16. Moved out right after I turned 17. I never had fun days of blowing my money and I don't recommend moving out at 17, but dad and I butted heads big time. My son lives at home rent free and doesn't spend his money on clothes, but he buys corvettes. :)
I owned red pumps similar to the ones in the top left corner of the pic. Red is my favorite color and I had a lot of red clothes. It's very rare that I wear heels now. I'm all about comfort with my neck and back issues.
My mom made some of her own dresses back in her younger years and one was even put in the paper after winning a contest. :) My great-grandmother made her own patterns for her dresses. Kyle can sew better than me. lol I didn't get the sewing gene, wish I did.

Sandra, I enjoyed your post so much! I may have to go out and buy some red shoes! My first car was a 1962 Chevy II. I loved that car. My grandma made me a tent dress in a huge flowery print to camouflage my "broomstick" figure. LOL If she could see me now!! I enjoyed your trip down memory lane.

My Godmother brought me a beautiful red purse made of real leather with a long strap. I loved that purse, the only red purse I have ever owned. I carried it everywhere. It broke, I fixed it, it broke and I fixed it until one day the seams fell apart. Great memories! Maybe some day I will own another one?

I never had a pair of (really) high heel shoes in my life. I just can't walk in them. I think the closest I got was a pair of semi-high wedge-heeled sandals in my upper teens. (But they were red!)

What a great read Sandra, I loved this walk down memory lane with you. I remember buying a pair of green satin shoes with five inch heels! They cost most of my wage packet too but how I loved those shoes, and caused a few eye rolls from my mum and dad. Truth be told they were a podiatrist's dream, lol.

FUN share, Sandra! My mother must have drank the same Kool-Aid as yours -- I had church shoes, school shoes and gym shoes. (Were you told to change into your 'play' clothes after school, too?)

I don't recall ever owning a pair of red shoes, but at one time I enjoyed coordinating my shoes, outfit and handbag. These days I'm too tired to bother.

My mother had a seersucker dress much like the one on the left! That's a simple - but classy look, isn't it? Sounds as if you had an inherent sense style from a young age.

Oh yeah, the tent dress covered 'a multitude of sins,' so to speak. LOL I LOVE those red spikey heels. They're gorgeous and I've never been able to wear a heel that high. Now I wear Danskos or Wolverine hikers or NB walking shoes. And I don't care. That's what's great about getting older. LOL (although when I pass a shoe store and see the darling boots with spikey heels, I do think how fun it would be....)

Well I think it was money well spent! Red was my grandmother's favorite color and I always think of her when I see anyone wearing red.

This was so much fun to read...my mom always wanted red shoes but would not buy them. I bought her a pair either right before or right after Roger and I were married.

Oh boy...those Candies in the first collage bring back memories from high school. I was never (and am still not) a shoes/fashion gal and could live in jeans, t-shirt(with a flannel shirt over it up here) and bare feet (or hiking boots :-))

Those were the days! I remember in H.S. that all of my outfits and shoes matched. We had to wear nylon stockings too! Then about a year after we graduated they were allowed to wear blue jeans.
