Saw Palm/Serenoa/Tala-Cani

Our Saw Palmetto has been at the base of the pine tree for the 27 years we have lived here. Bob hates it, I love it. Slow growing but BIG and slowly takes over. I have taken zillions of photos of it and what grows in and around it. On Wikipedia  I found they can live to be 500 to 700 years old. Wow.

The orange hibiscus reaches out into the saw like fronds and thrives as does the bright green fern. Below is the green fern as it looks during our drought. The hibiscus and Saw Palmetto are drought resistant.
Other names, per Wikipedia
tala (Choctaw); cani (Timucua); ; taalachoba ("big palm", Alabama); ta:laɬ a  kko ("big palm", Creek); talco :bˆı ("big palm", Mikasuki); talimushi ("palmetto's uncle", Choctaw)

I like the last pictures the best, with the fluffy white. What is it? Is it one of these names? Now this makes me think of that old song about Bille Jo McCalister throwing something off the Chocktaw bridge. Or was the bridge on Choctaw ridge...

Very nice photos. Just yesterday we noticed that several of the yards around here have the bright orange native azaleas growing in the woods. Wish we had a few here.

I like the collage of photos with the hibiscus peeking through. Wow, 700 years! That is a hardy plant.

Hello, I love the palmetto and the hibiscus. The fern is new to me, I have never seen it before. Pretty collages and photos. Happy Friday, enjoy your day and weekend!

I would be with you and love it, and Roger would be like Bob and hate it....

So what is it that Bob hates about it? I like the looks of it. If I had that in my back yard I would take a ton of pictures of it too

Great set of pictures. I had no idea that some of these plants could live that long.

Gorgeous! I really like the 'hidden but showy' hibiscus

I think it's pretty amazing how the differing species not only grow but thrive(!) together. Hmmm... methinks there's a lesson there.

Wow, that is a long time for a plant to live. I love all the plants you posted. There is so much beauty around and at your place. Thank you for sharing it in pictures. Hugs

Wow, that is a long life span for the palm. Did you hear, our drought is over for now.
