Tiny HOUSE or Safe Room?

Since I am the opposite of procrastinator, when I heard we would be a direct hit from Irma, the biggest and nastiest hurricane to ever hit Florida, My fretter kicked into over drive and I thought SAFE HOUSE ... Closet in middle of house...she was 9 hours away.
While we waited for Irma the Hurricane, I gathered things for the walk in closet safe room. Above is an old photo from 2005. When we added Jake as 3rd dog in our crew, I needed a bed big enough for Three. under the sheet is a lounge cushion like the insert. Someone made it and it was perfect for a bed and fit right under the front window. Above pic is when our new sofa did not show up on time, Bob and I TRIED to use it for a sofa. we lost.

UPDATE: I will be off line for blogging for at least a couple of days. we are fine but facing massive cleanup, at least a couple of days. I will check emails and FB a few times a day. We did not lose power, only our provider of TV/internet. sorry I can return your comments.

It took 2 hours to remove all from the 48 x 71 inches closet. The dog pad is 71 inches. Woo hoo. I laid it wall to wall. Tried to sit on it and get back up. OH MY! OWIE!

I grabbed the bottom and back cushions from the two DOG bed chairs in our bedroom and created seating, one in each corner, a few blankets, a dog bed in 3rd corner and Supplies in 4th corner.

In the pot is peanut butter, knife, dog food, crackers and a jug of water, battery radio. do not laugh. I warn you I will be mad if you do. The reason the supplies are in a big metal pot???

Because I could not find a whistle to blow if the tree falls on the house trapping us in the closet, I will use the butter knife to beat like crazy on the bottom of the pot. YOU SHOULD HERE IT!. Bob has rolled his eyes so many times at my preparations they probably hurt.

Between the bed, 2 hats, case full of prescriptons, charger that charges cell phone without power. 2 flashlights, 1 zippy cup for both of us to drink water from, 2 cups of coffee in thermal, kindle, Bible and thank you Jo for reminding me of that. Loaded pistol, 2 watches, survival knife, matches, candles, lighter stick. 6 battery candles to use first so we don't burn the closet down. Black bag with wallets, keys, birth cert and proof we live here. all credit cards/cash, that is the grab bag if we have to climb out window or on roof. everything in both bags is sealed in baggies.

The drill is... wear clothes with pockets, put on hats, tape down glasess with duct tape so they don't blow off in the wind. grab what will go in our pockets and FLEE by climbing or floating. I said to my brother how would I get on the roof, he said just float silly... Bob said go to garage, put up ladder, I take the dog, you take the bag and the chain saw and we cut a hole in the roof to get out...
To be continued....

PTL your safe! I never would have thought of taping my glasses on. If my memory gets any worse I may have to try that on a sunny day ;)

Oh, I am so glad to see another post...wondering do you have power? Wondering how Jake and Bob did through it all? The eyerolls seem normal...,

Oh MS...my word you were well prepared. How in the world did you think of all this to do? I'm so happy all is well and your fretter paid off for sure. I'm taking notes!!

My friend in Cleveland, Ga (in the mountains) got slammed...totally unexpected until almost the last minute. Entire small county NO power, no water, trees everywhere, they can't get out of their driveway due to a huge tree on power lines. She said Monday night was the scariest night of her life they heard trees falling all night.

Hello, I misunderstood, I thought you lost power. It looks like you were very prepared for the storm, your little room in the middle of house with all the supplies you needed. Just glad no one was hurt and you are all safe.

I would not over do the clean up, take your time.

I am both crying and laughing now. I am so happy! It was so hard wondering what was happening with you and not knowing! I pictured you falling off the roof,of course, and wondered how I would find out...I would look up the hospital numbers, but they would be too busy to answer! You are so good in emergencies! You think of everything, I would not have thought of even half this stuff! How long did you stay in there? I know you will be telling us in several blogs. Feeling such a huge sigh of relief. Turned on CNN last night and Anderson Cooper was in Bradenton standing in front of a smashed house. Thanks to Facebook, I knew it wasn't yours!

What an interesting story - they should make a book of everyone's story - that was amazing - you were really prepared. I would be like you - I would have been scared to death and I would pack that room! I like what Ginny said - crying and laughing!

Better over-prepared than unprepared, in a situation like that! :) As things turned out, did you actually use the "safe room"? (except for "pre-storm therapy", I mean...) I felt almost worn out just by following that storm on the news/internet from the other side of the world... I'm glad it did not get worse than it did right where you are (as I understand was the case in other places further south). I watched a video from Bradenton (I think from CNN, I don't remember now) after the worst had passed, so I did get an idea of what it was like. Lots of trees fallen etc but no serious flooding was the impression I got.

Glad you and Bob are safe. What an ordeal that must of been. The things I read about going on the roof and bob carrying the dog you may have to do. Then one another station said if your bunkered. Will try to get people out after Math. You were blesses it never hit like the one bad one . I seen on C.N.N. one interview of
a doctor and his wife so scared. They had people stealing in a hotel they were in. So for protection no police to help. He had a knife and machete. They said never again would they stay at their home like at first they did.

You did what you wanted to stay. And God spared you. Well the way you guys ate. Was good protein. I am sure your thinner just going through it all. Not sure if your out of still electricity or water. They say by the 14th or so you should have water. Well we all know you will write a book for us later on your blog. I also checked Facebook. As when this was all going on. We had no American station to know.

I am totally impressed with you and your preparations! You could very well have needed every bit of it! SO thankful you did not!

Just talked to Summer in Puerto Rico and it is a scary situation down there. Aid is being provided but thieves are robbing the ones who bring the aid and take their boats. No more aid will be coming unless they have security. In PR - no police or anyone in authority to help. People are being KILLED for water!
Not at all like the situation in South Texas or there in Florida.
Praying for my daughter's and granddaughter's saftey and for the families there.

You were well prepared, but thankfully you didn't need to use these supplies.

Well Bob can roll his eyes all he wants, but YOU are the one I want to be with if a hurricane hits. You're a great example of 'Be Prepared!' God bless you. This clean up and inconvenience would get old VERY FAST.

Something told me that you would have a great story to tell after the storm and it is better than I could ever imagine. lol
I am glad you both survived. :)

You did a great job in being prepared! My family stayed in my dad's closet while Irma was hitting them.

I'm not laughing, I promise. I put all my irreplaceable stuff like photos, family Bibles etc in plastic bags and put them in my walk-in closet along with a chair and supplies just in case. Fortunately it wasn't as bad as it could have been. My cousin had a tree crash through her bedroom wall though, while she and her grandson were taking a nap in there. Fortunately they are ok.
