We, too, would find a shady spot and she would turn those ingredients into memorable sandwiches. She would bring sweetened tea or KoolAid. I used to love banana sandwiches and picnic sandwiches were usually filled with fish paste from a jar or tinned meat. My Grandma baked a lot and made jam suet pudding and custard and rice pudding. Spam fritters and chipped potatoes were fried in lard. I liked crab as a child, and I don't ever eat it now (unless I'm in a very good restaurant that makes exceptionally good crab cakes with a remoulade sauce).
