Mid Summer of 2012.. Bob came home with a papaya seed that a friend gave him. we have NO where to plant a tree that will get 20 to 30 feet tall. He planted it in a bucket.
See the little blooms above, they open into a flower and fall off, they are supposed to make a papaya fruit.
The thing is growing like a weed, taller than my head now, in a bucket. He asked Sam why the fruit flower is falling off. He said, Oh Sorry it is a male plant, if the flowers fall off, male plants don't make fruit.
I found that some trees are male and some female and male plants and males do not have fruit.
The male tree has lots of beautiful flowers, but is only for looks.. HUMMM.. does this apply to Bob? hummmmm

I wish his friends would stop giving him seeds, below is one of 2 mango seeds that he planted in a bucket, this one is about 4 feet tall....

Keep them in the pots and they won't grow to full size. Maybe Bob should take a course in growing bonsais?

And how about if he contacts the nearest college, which teaches agriculture (or whatever)... And asks if they would like to investigate, into his "growing powers"? After the Flu Season, that is.

Bob reminds me of my dad, If he had a seed he'd plant it. He once planted a grapefruit seed. It grew into quite a large tree, he couldn't keep it outside, because it would freeze, so he kept it in the livingroom. He trimmed it once in a while when it neared the ceiling. Count your blessings, Bob's gardening skills stay outside!!!

ReplyDeleteYes, he understands. But this is one of his hobbies and what he loves to do, like we love blogging. And he is also sooo good at it. So he has to do it. If any nurseries or greenhouses or florists knew of his talents, they would hire him in a minute!! He makes beauty! He could make a fortune in the lawn care/flower planting business!!
ReplyDeleteBob sounds so much like my dad. It is sad that I inherited his love of and interest in plants of all varieties but DID NOT inherit his green thumb. I can even kill artificial flowers. Hope does, however, spring eternal.
ReplyDeleteHaha, never heard of growing papaya and mango trees in buckets... but he seems to be doing a good job. We have these growing at home, in India they are quite common. The papaya stalk (when you break off the leaf) is hollow and we used to use that to drink the sweet water inside tender coconuts.

ReplyDeleteThe only way to stop Bob's planting might be to make sure there are no empty buckets lying around. Like someone said above at least you don't have to bring them inside in the winter. My dad had about a half dozen banana trees which he dug up each winter and stored in the family room downstairs. Yep, that was fun.
