Bob and the Papaya Stalk

Mid Summer of 2012.. Bob came home with a papaya seed that a friend gave him. we have NO where to plant a tree that will get 20 to 30 feet tall. He planted it  in a bucket.

See the little blooms above, they open into a flower and fall off, they are supposed to make a papaya fruit.

The thing is growing like a weed, taller than my head now, in a bucket. He asked Sam why the fruit flower is falling off. He said, Oh Sorry it is a male plant, if the flowers fall off, male plants don't make fruit.

I found that some trees are male and some female and male plants and males do not have fruit.

The male tree has lots of beautiful flowers, but is only for looks.. HUMMM.. does this apply to Bob? hummmmm

I wish his friends would stop giving him seeds, below is one of 2 mango seeds that he planted in a bucket, this one is about 4 feet tall....

What part of We have no where to plant another tree does he not understand?

  3. Keep them in the pots and they won't grow to full size. Maybe Bob should take a course in growing bonsais?

  4. Mmmmmmm.... How about, if he gives those trees-in-buckets, back to the givers of the original seeds????????

    :-)

  5. And how about if he contacts the nearest college, which teaches agriculture (or whatever)... And asks if they would like to investigate, into his "growing powers"? After the Flu Season, that is.

  6. My mother had that "gift". I did not inherit it. Send me your address and I'll send Bob a couple of beans!! Just kidding.

    Best,

  7. Bob reminds me of my dad, If he had a seed he'd plant it. He once planted a grapefruit seed. It grew into quite a large tree, he couldn't keep it outside, because it would freeze, so he kept it in the livingroom. He trimmed it once in a while when it neared the ceiling. Count your blessings, Bob's gardening skills stay outside!!!

  8. Its called 'selective hearing'.. men hear what they want to, says my hubs :)
Suggest to Bob that he sell his trees and take you out to eat.

  9. They are beautiful plants. MOM has some extra seeds laying around if you need something else.

  12. At least you don't have to bring it inside to save it from freezing.

Dad would faithfully dig up his banana every year and store under the house. All this time we only one bunch of bananas. Eventually Dad let the weather take the trouble.

  14. i'm just jealous you live in a climate where you can just drop a seed in a bucket and expect fruit. :)

  15. I've never planted ANY seed that grew!

  16. Credit to Bob,he does have a way of getting plants to grow.

  17. Bob definitely has a green thumb! I think I'd find another friend and pass it on.

  18. Yes, he understands. But this is one of his hobbies and what he loves to do, like we love blogging. And he is also sooo good at it. So he has to do it. If any nurseries or greenhouses or florists knew of his talents, they would hire him in a minute!! He makes beauty! He could make a fortune in the lawn care/flower planting business!!

  19. Bob sounds so much like my dad. It is sad that I inherited his love of and interest in plants of all varieties but DID NOT inherit his green thumb. I can even kill artificial flowers. Hope does, however, spring eternal.

  20. Haha, never heard of growing papaya and mango trees in buckets... but he seems to be doing a good job. We have these growing at home, in India they are quite common. The papaya stalk (when you break off the leaf) is hollow and we used to use that to drink the sweet water inside tender coconuts.

  22. My hubby keeps wanting a camellia bush...not sure where we would put it either!

  23. That's too funny! Good thing he don't have all the land we have. He'd already have the entire yard full of trees! But then again with his green thumb he could grow a killer garden!

  24. You would think that after it gets so big it wouldn't still be living in the bucket. Well it wouldn't at my house any way....lol Interesting about the male and female thing. I didn't know any plants were like that

  25. Looks like Bob will be turning your yard into a tropical jungle, Sandra.....or is it already looking that way? Nice if the plants produce useable produce too...how many years do you have to wait?.

  26. So are you going to go get a female tree? I haven't had a good papaya since Bolivia. Makes me hungry for papaya, Sandra!

  27. Hey, he could be planting seeds away from home. I say give him all the buckets he wants.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The only way to stop Bob's planting might be to make sure there are no empty buckets lying around. Like someone said above at least you don't have to bring them inside in the winter. My dad had about a half dozen banana trees which he dug up each winter and stored in the family room downstairs. Yep, that was fun.

  29. Bob has a green thumb and others know it. So you have male trees...

  30. Wonderful!

I love papaya! Abundant around here.

    Have a nice day.

  31. My husband is another one who has 'green fingers'. You have some wonderful plants/trees to show for Bob's enthusiasm for growing things - and you are rewarded with some good food straight from the plant. Have a good day, Sandra - from chilly UK!
