Gamble - Ladies Wear

Ladies Wear from Civil War Era
Wal-Mart was out of their brand of Fabric Softener and without thinking, I bought Snuggles Softener.  I came home and stripped the linens and washed, dried and put back on the bed...

After lunch, I grabbed my Kindle for my daily read/nap and propped up in bed.

Coughing, sniffing and choking, I thought OH NO.. my perfume allergies kicked in and I thought how dumb can you be.. you know to sniff something new before you buy it...

Not thinking AGAIN, I yanked off the offensive sheets and put the extra set on. That night when I laid in bed, I said OH NO...

Bob says What Now?

I said "the reason these sheets are extra is I can't stand the feel of them, that is why I bought the new sheets"...

WHAT? he says... "I can't stand the way they feel on my skin, like laying on cardboard." he rolls over and is instantly asleep while I toss and turn.

Ball gown and Day Dress

The next morning when he said I can't believe you are still complaining about these sheets and I said Just consider me The Princess in The Princess and the Pea.. WHAT? he says

Would you know what I meant? CLICK HERE for the story by Hans Christian Anderson..

I went to Dollar General Sunday and and bought softener with no scent, came home and stripped that bed for the 3rd time to wash the sheets. Guess what? I went to buy Fabric Softener and came home with 7 items and left what I went for sitting on the counter.... Back to the store and you know the rest of the story.

The Civil war ladies would have thought me quite MAD... no washer, no dryer, no FABRIC softener... no car, no Dollar General 4 minutes away... plus I bet the sheets they slept on were like a board, if they even had sheets.

  3. p.s. Love this post, love these photos. I keep wondering about those first settlers and how they dealt with mosquitoes, let alone not having all these little extras like fabric softener.

  4. I doubt they had "sheets" too...more like animal hide...hey, have you tried that? Allergies are horrible...but at least with all those washings, they'll have no dust mites...:)JP

  5. Sandra, I can sympathize.. I have the same perfume allergies and my hubby thinks I am crazy.. My dear hubby is also one who can lay his head on a rock and fall asleep.while I am tossing and turning.I had a good laugh at your comment about the Civil War ladies thinking you were quite MAD..I guess we should be grateful we live with all these conveniences. Have a happy weekend!

  7. It truly is amazing how spoiled we are, Sandra. We have no idea what it would have been like to to live without a car and nearby conveniences! ;)

I don't like scented products either. EW!

  13. loving those civil war era fashions!
i just love those kind of dresses, women's clothing really shows feminineness. wonder how much would it cost to have a dress like that during their time.

    loved these photos!

  14. I do not like days like that....all the chasing and having to fix the bed all over again so many times! Yes they would have thought you quite mad but I would have gone crazy wearing the clothes they wore!

  15. I can never buy just one thing! I know what you mean about the sheets, and I know that fairy story. I have really sensitive skin. The commercials are so good that we just mindlessly pick up what they are selling! I LOVE that trunk full of fancy lady things!! I think they did not have suitcases back then, only trunks, yow!

  17. You will sleep to-night Sweetie.

    Oh maybe not.

We put our clocks a head to-night so not sure if you

    will get that Princess sleep.

  18. I'm very sensitive to smells too so always make sure to buy the stuff without perfume. And as I have to do my washing in a common laundry room, I always make sure to clean the washing powder compartment first... Perhaps you should treat yourself to another set of good quality sheets :)

  19. Hey, maybe I need to switch current brand for no-sceny dryer sheets. I do sometimes have bedtime coughing spells.

  20. I didn't need to click, I know the story of the Princess and the Pea.
Love all the ladies wear. I don't know if I would like dressing like that all the time though.
Your trip to the dollar store sounds like something I would do

  21. I know exactly what you mean about the princess and the pea....it is hard to find sheets I really like any more. They all say oh, they are 600 count, or 400 count and I think even higher. Seems like the higher the count, the quicker they were out. I had sheets from Penneys when we were first married and they last years and years...still might have a top sheet around.

One bed has a set that daughter bought that are Ralph Lauren I think and I LOVE them...they feel like the sheets I loved from JC Penneys, and have lasted that good.

  25. Hubby has nicknamed me Princess & the Pea, too funny! My sheets have to be soft & no wrinkles and my pillow, don't get me started. LOL! I knew I wasn't alone! I do like a LIGHT scent.

  26. I have soft flannel sheets on the bed now. I don't like giving them up for regular sheets, but one day it will be too warm to use them. Lovely collection of Civil War items. I don't even want to think of how different life was for the gals back then. I'm so spoiled to our modern conveniences.
