We were eating breakfast and a really loud shrieking was coming from the back yard, on the way out I grabbed the camera... there he was sitting way up on the power line. Took a shot! with a camera silly..
I returned to breakfast...again with the loud shrieking... what is up with that? Per internet this is a red tailed hawk, the most common in North America and he was shrieking to claim his territory. NO OTHERS HUNTING ALLOWED UPDATE: TexWisGirl thinks he is a Red Shoulder. Feel free to tell me what he is.

thank you to Andrea Priebe, who in the comments said a juvenile red shoulder and asked if the sound was like the one i had. It is not. i found the Red shoulder sound and have added it...the second one down is what we see and hear.
i'm gonna say no on the red-tail id now that i see his breast feathers. they usually have a white bib breast. this might be the redshoulder as you initially suspected. heck. i'm too lazy to dig out the bird book right now...
ReplyDeleteGood shot!!! These are awesome and it does look like he's giving you the evil hawk eye. We had one sitting in a tree in our back yard one day and I was amazed at how long they can sit and watch for dinner.

Madi's safe house is in the study/red room where her sunpuddle lives no window just a sky light. Bryan's train room is on one side of her safe house and the guest bedroom is up here too. If they would do the 3 windows up here first maybe she and I could hold up in the office. We'll see. If she is spooked I don't want her darting off. I'll be happy when this is and the painting of the windows next week is over.

Great shots. I don't think it's a Red-tailed Hawk. They have a very definite band of darker feather across the belly and more of a red tail.I love the pictures.

ReplyDeleteI'm going to throw a wrench in everyone's guess. I am going to say a juvenile Red Shouldered Hawk because he has the speckled chest and the barred tail of a juvenile. His bone structure is also finer than the Red Tail Hawk. The real clue is the "screaming" he is doing. Does it sound like the recording you included, because if it does it is a Red Tail. I can tell you that the Red Shoulder sounds totally different with a series of high screechy cries. Will the mystery ever be solved ? :)

I think its a hawk, too...LOL I have trouble identifying hawks. There are just so many and when you look at the books on them...well, I get even more confused. The one I can usually identify is the Northern Harrier...and notice I say usually.

ReplyDeleteIt's been awhile since I have seen a hawk of any thoe looking for a meal as our apt is too high up to see any in the trees below. But at our VA house, ones similar to this one (red tail) could be seen auite often.

ReplyDeleteThey do make some noise! I've learned from other bloggers to look for a patterned "belly band" to ID Red-tail Hawks. Though juveniles of any bird species can be tricky to ID sometimes. So nice of it to sit for a photo session.
