This is one of my Tadpoles grown up, there is another one living in the bathing suit. I think it is Freddy the daddy of the tadpoles. I ran out of spring lettuce mix and steamed frozen spinach.. Now all the little frogs look like POP EYE... he he he.... Bob called me outside and said LOOK WHAT YOU DID.... there were half a dozen teeny frogs in the swimming pool. The rain barrel is almost empty, YAY....
TO THOSE OF YOU... who made comments about the tadpoles staying because I fed them. There is no way for them to LEAVE the barrel until they grow legs. They were not growing legs but were becoming cannibals because I found 2 of them eating 2 others. I figured out they had been in there for 3 months and it should have been 3 or 4 weeks. Next time I see eggs floating in the water I will be scooping them out. But then who will eat the mosquito larvae, we did not see a single mosquito all the time they were there.
That is when I started feeding them, and within 2 weeks of getting enough food they turned into frogs, but alas not one into a prince.
I always knew you were doing the right thing. Oh my gosh, I thought this one was one of the parents. But it is a grown baby!! This is the last one in the barrel?
ReplyDeleteYou feeding them was a good thing. If you hadn't then they wouldn't have survived. From the picture it looks like it would be much bigger than 1 1/2 inches

ReplyDeleteSounds like you can't win. Feed the tadpoles or get eaten alive by mosquitoes.

ReplyDeleteYou have painted us the full picture - from darkness into light! Actually, even in the 'wild' pond situation, if overcrowding competition is fierce, tadpoles will turn cannibal. Survival of the fittest and all that. You have given more frogs more chance, so I hope your mozzie population continues at a minimum in return for your favour! YAM xx
