It Is a Duck

Meet Mama Duck! She is the new resident in our pool. I made the collage and put Mallard on it, but then decided she is a Spotted black duck, and now believe she is a
Mama Mexican Black Duck. Now after another look, she might just be American Black Mottled Duckk
Please ID her for me! She is unafraid of Beau and of Me and Bob, lets me walk around talking to her.
She glides around dipping her beak in and out, in and out.
Our pool is full of avocado buds dropping like rain and lots of bugs of all kinds and spiders. She appears to be eating.
We love her no matter which duck she is.

What Am I? other than to cute for words!

  2. Oh my gosh, great photos! I especially love the one with her beak open! She doesn't look quite right for a female Mallard, they have that bit of teal stripe under their wings. But WAIT!! You get in that pool among spiders and bugs?? I would DIE!

  3. Great photos, and a great way to present this beautiful little duck. The green background is a lovely backdrop. I will leave it to the experts to ID her. Have a great week Sandra!

  5. Hello Sandra :=)
I think you are right in the identification. It's an American Black Duck, and it's beautiful. She has the sweetest face, and I like the feather pattern. I looked it up in my books and found a picture that looks exactly the same. I wonder how long she will stay with you!

  6. American Black Ducks and Mallards are notorious for interbreeding and I think this is a hybrid of the two species.

  7. There are so many hybrids it's difficult to pinpoint the species. American black ducks would be rare in Florida. Perhaps a mottled duck?!!

  8. Hello Sandra,
Your duck has made itself right at home . It is so cute, I love all the photos. David is an expert on the bird ids, hybrid sounds right to me.
    Have a great day!

  9. How nice to see your pool visitor, Sandra, and sure that it will be identified by duck knowing bloggers. What will be interesting is whether or not the duck will stay around after snacking on the seeds and insects.

  10. Just for fun I used google lens on two of your pictures. One said a mallard and the other two collages said a rouen.
No matter what it is it's cute. How fun to have it swimming in your pool.

  15. Ooooh exciting new event to photograph and the phots are just great. She is definitely a good looking duck. We would have said mallard because we didn't know all those other kinds even existed. Her markings on the sides aren't really mallard-y tho are they? paw smacks Mr T

  18. She doesn’t look like any from round here so I wouldn’t have a clue. Hopefully the chlorine in your pool doesn’t do her any harm
