Hurricane Milton Anniversary OCT 9

After Hurricane Milton and Pine Tree removed Above, Oct 9, 2024
Yesterday was ONE YEAR since Milton hit us, a direct hit and being in the eye of a hurricane for the first time in my life. Below is same view after 9 inches or rain in 4 days, the weeds are rampant and really green.

the tree stump is under all these weeds

Its a lot of weeds but its green and gives shade from our firebrand summer sun.
This was our view when eating at the table or breakfast bar, in fact the view from our entire live area.

Hearing the whine of chain saws and a huge crane and a bobcat, I raced to the door just as the first of five trees went down, this was the last one, I was so upset I forgot to take photos

you can see the man in orange driving the bobcat, they just bulldozed 5 tall palms.

Above the view from my kitchen is the house and a gap and because they are gone, this is the view from my living area for most of the day.
the blinds are closed most of the day and before this open all day.

the sun is so bright it is blinding and HOT. The palms were our dappled screen from the sun.

.
Flashing light below;  I took to shots of the last tree as it fell and animated

  1. It is sad those trees were cut down! Especially since they provided shade on your home. I like the trumpet vine flowers! I know it is a weed, but I like them. Take care, enjoy your day! Have a great weekend.

  5. OH, how I hate to see trees going down! Especially when they provided shade and some filter from the places beyond. That makes me sad with you. But I do love the trumpet vine growing everywhere! At least it has flowers and green stuff! Your view is still lovely, and your pool looks lovely too. I guess we have to take the bad with the good and try to focus on the good. Sometimes it's hard, however. I do understand that. Have a blessed day today. It's raining here now, and is supposed to rain all day. I am actually happy about that because our pond needs it so badly!

  6. I remember when you were hit by that hurricane.
It's so sad to see trees come down. Such a loss of the view and the shade.
Hope your day is going well!

  7. Goodness a year already - I hope none this year. It may be weeds but green is a life color to me. So sorry they took those trees down. Hope you have a nice day Sandra

  9. Its a shame to see all of those trees down. They were such a nice filtered shade for you. So sorry.
Wow on it being 1 year since the hurricane. What a crazy year its been too for you. The weeds sure appreciate the rain you have had. Now you have a Florida Jungle. Love your animation of the palm tree.
    Hang in There.

  10. I feel the same way about weeds as you do - they are green and look better than bare dirt! In the country we love our weeds and I decided to leave the ones alone here in the city if they are the least bit attractive. I just pretend they are green borders and I keep them trimmed back. Weeds make good ground cover and I like the natural meadow look.
Sorry about your trees. When we lost our big elm tree a few years ago - actually several years ago - it changed the dynamics of the flower beds. More sun and less shade. The neighbor behind us let the trash trees grow and now they provide us with some shade. I see y'all have trumpet vines, too!! I love them!!!

  11. Sandra what a great shame to lose your shade and such resilient tall plants in a climate like yours.

  12. The falling tree flashes are great! Don't know how on earth you made them!! You must have been really upset of you forgot to snap!!

  13. I also like that you document the bad, along with the good. Something to learn from in the future!!

  14. How I remember this terrifying time for you three. That's twice now (I think) you've skirted disaster. Abrupt changes to the landscape like this are hard to swallow, aren't they? That little travelling lamp (pix #8) is sure attractive!

  15. That was such a nasty storm and it really is sad so many trees came down. That bright sun coming in all the time is no fun. Hugs and love from all of us.

  16. I am sorry you lost those trees for many reasons, but losing them for your shade is a big deal. I love the look of your yard. It is very tropical.

  17. I can relate the shade of the trees. We had these huge black walnuts over the trailer and it was sooo nice, but also dangerous. Now that they're gone, it's not shade back there like it used to be.

  18. That sure was a scary time for you all to go through that storm. We're so glad that this season seems to be a dud as far as named storms go.

  19. Storms are so very scary. We've been through a few ourselves, and it's so sad to lose trees, for storms or any other reason.

  20. Storms are everywhere and I am so sorry you had to suffer through all that. My niece is going to Cancun Mexico in the morning. I heard that storm slowed down. I hope they do not get caught in it out of the country! Two weeks ago we went to Georgetown, Colorado to see the Fall colors on Guanella Pass. The whole town is run on electricity. Well the town was shut down. The clerk at the CIrcle K store said if they wer not in the middle of a renovation they would not have had the porta potties outside. People with EV were stuck with no charging for their cars and those who needed gas could not get it due to everything tied into the electrical system. We kept going up the mountain and came down the other side where there was power in Bailey Colorado plus more lovely viewing of the foliage. What a crazy day it was though.Take care of yourselves. So grateful to be here.

  21. Thank goodness the storms left you alone this year. They are powerfully forces of nature and getting stronger.

  22. Well I certainly love all that green. The trees being cut down would have made me sad though. Not just because I like trees but for the lack of shade you had afterwards. I don't understand cutting a tree down unless its in danger of falling on it's own or heavily diseased.
