Mottled Duck Tales-Day 15 update Safehaven

Day 1 of injury 4/27/2026

Missy, injured female Mottled Duck, flopped down  April 27, 2026, they had been in and out of pool and front yard for a couple of weeks, I thought she might die and/or lose her leg.

Missy, Day 12 of my caregiver duties, May 7th.
Missy has recovered all her feathers and though her leg will never function, on day 9 she took 2 steps, using the injured leg like a peg leg on a person. Day 10  she walked 2 feet, Day 12 she walked 3 feet, just like Chester, in Gunsmoke.

the three of us have bonded, I do not feed them, they have all the food they need.

they love grass, our yard is perfect, they love sand and leaves, weeds and grass and algae to eat, its a duck buffet.

Since I grew the grass tall for Beau, he has eaten no grass, which is our good news, for a month now. The grass is in the shade and Missy lays down to eat, Mr. does his bodyguard thing.

you can see them better if you pinch your screen out. Hard to see with cell phone pics. A good pic of Beaus Grass, now known as Duck Buffett

they love the sandy soil, which is our back yard, dirt, weeds. They bath in the pool and eat algae for dessert. ha ha

the photo above and below were taken Sunday May 10, Day 15 of MY ducks.
I left Bob's chair outside to dry out the seat and Missy was so thankful. I may start a Duck Go Fund Me to buy her own wheel chair.
THE BIGGEST NEWS.
Today is May 18, 3 weeks yesterday since I wondered if she would live, or ever walk again.
She actually can spread her orange foot flat now. It does move  a little when she swims. and now she walks with it flat and has a slight limp. but, and she is flying, walking, swimming. they come and go, they have a schedule, just like we do. They sleep in the middle of the pool, (a sight that melts my heart seeing them in the moonlight, roosting in the middle in their Safe Place, they e eat breakfast, bath, dance on their tails, get out dry off and preen their feathers and fly off around 8 and come back at 10.. they spend the heat of the day in our shade and leave for dinner about 5ish.. She has healed and is 98 % healed.. I have to fight the desire to pet them/feed them, I could if I wanted to. I can walk up to one foot of them and put down a water bowl.

  1. I'm so glad Missy is doing this well! It's astounding how wildlife can heal and then carry on with the effects of an injury like that.
I'm also very happy that Beau hasn't needed to eat grass for a month!

  2. We have so loved following Missy! We are glad that You are taking such good care of them (and Bob and Beau). We are sorry we have not had the chance to post comments! We have light at the end of the tunnel! The BIG event is this coming Saturday and things will get back to semi normal. Mom has a couple of grants to write but she is better at saying NO! We pray for you (and Bob, Beau and now Missy and Mr), YOU are one awesome lady! Sending you love, Marv, Barb and the gang.

  12. Hooray for Missy, she is a great example of never giving up to us all! Nice that you are a firsthand witness to this and take delight in it too. Those ducks have it made in the shade to quote a saying and a pun!

  16. This is very heartwarming, Sandra, and I am glad that Missy is doing well and has not fallen victim to a predator.i know that you don’t feed them, but maybe once in a while a little cracked corn as a special treat couldn’t hurt. Just sayin’….

  17. That is awesome that Missy has healed so well. At least she is able to get around with what she has now. It must be so much fun to watch them every day. Maybe you need a little gazebo in your backyard just for Missy.

  21. That is all good news. I'm glad to hear that Missy is doing better. You are so kind to let them be in your yard. I love the photo of the 2 of them from May 10th. Does Beau bother them at all?
I'm also happy to hear that Beau isn't eating the grass. He seems to be feeling good which is wonderful.

  22. As tempted as we are to make pets of them, or at least make them somewhat tame, it’s not fair to them, I’m glad you are resisting.

It’s delightful to know she is healed up and they seem to be happy.

  23. This is really a good update, Sandra, and perhaps one day, they will leave once Missy is up to it, but till then your yard is a safe haven and they know that too. You are wise not to feed them.

  28. there was a duck (Or a goose) whose wing was damaged and could not head south with the rest of the V flock. it settled in the hog lot, eating feed, and sleeping on top of the hogs in the hog sheds. It stayed there after winter was done. One day my folks found a mound of feathers in the hog lot.
