Wheelchair Rollover! Oh My

Yesterday was horrible. At our 9 am dermatologist appt for Bob, I was struggling to push him up the ramp, and do to slack off speed for a woman who passed in front of us, stopped and was backing down slowly to roll far enough away to get up speed, and the small wheels on the people mover, hit a wide crack at the bottom, turned his wheelchair over backwards and I went down out to the side. both of us down on the ground. The woman who passed in front of us came back and a man and a woman helped me get up and sat the wheelchair back on its wheels. The woman pushed Bob into the office and left us there..

Picture this laying on its back with Bob kicking like a turtle on its back. These are convenient, but his regular wheel chair, it would not have  happened. The big wheel would not have caught or turned it over.  Word of warning if you use one. I can't get the regualar wheel chair in/out of the car

His elbow was bleeding and due to an adrenaline rush I was shaking like a leaf... We got through the appt and back home and all we have is a small cut on his elbow and 2 large bruises, one on his back and arm, i have 2 bruises and my right hand is sore. I went for a chest xray because my rib was hurting, I see my doctor this morning.

I cried the rest of the day Just Because it happened.

We are blessed to have no permanent injuries. Bob swears it did not hit his head, and refused to go to the doctor. we are both alive and well

PT is coming at 9 and I have 10 am appt with my doctor to see what the x-ray showed, and she wants to check me  out.  Thank you Lord that we are not harmed.

  3. Oh my word, I am so sorry this happened to you. What a scare for you. I hope all goes well at the doctor today and they don't find anything on the xrays.

  4. Sandra...I am so sorry this happened to you both. What an ordeal you all went through. Sounds like the ramp needs to be looked at and any repairs made to the gaps...This could prevent this very situation from happening to someone else. Prayers for you both...Keep us updated on your doctor's appointment this morning...

  5. Oh no, that sounds "bad enough" even if it did not cause more serious injuries. Sounds like you'd really need help with transport to/from Bob's medical appointments. (Here there are such services, I'm not sure of the criteria but imagine being dependent on a wheelchair would be "qualification" enough. I know our insurance systems differ, though.)

  13. Oh Sandra, I am shaking right now just reading all of this. So thankful there are only scrapes and bruises. I am trusting there is nothing worse. Praying for your peace of mind and healing both inside and out.
Dave and I are going through something similar right now ourselves. I feel for you dear friend.Due to our circumstances I haven't replied before now but rest assured that you have been in my prayers daily.

  14. I am so sorry that happened to you both. I had to handle getting y son around in a wheelchair at the last stages of his disease. It was hard and no, you can't get a full sized wheelchair in the car and no one in the hospital would ever rescue us by bringing one down to help my son get inside for his appointments. .

  16. What a terrible experience. I'm so sorry that happened to both of you. I'm glad they came and helped you. ((Hugs)) Sorry about the cut on Bob's elbow and the bruises, along with your bruises. Hope your chest x-ray is okay. I would have been crying too. You are dealing with so much. I don't know how you do it each day. It is a blessing that you were not injured more than that. Take care.

  17. So sorry and happy you both were not seriously hurt. Does your town have a place where you call and get transportation to doctor visits? That might be an option for you. I hope there is something that can help.

  19. Hello Sandra,
I was just thinking of you! What a scary thing to happen to you and Bob. I am so glad there are only bruises and the small cut. It is good to get the x-ray to make sure all is ok. I am sure you both will be feeling sore for awhile. I hope the test will be good news. Take care, sending well wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery.

  21. Oh Dear Sandra! I am SO sorry this happened to you and Bob, but SO thankful there doesn't appear to be any serious injuries. It could've certainly been worse, but it was bad enough as it was! I understand about just crying the rest of the day from the trauma and anxiety of it all. (Shock!) I'm glad you are getting checked out thoroughly. Thank you for the email to alert me to this post. I haven't been on here much today, so hadn't seen it yet. I am definitely praying for you both. Sending you virtual (((HUGS))).

  23. I am still in shock, not only at what happened, but what "might have been" possibilities. I'm guessing your friend Ruby can exercise Beau on your behalf?
When you're in a state of mind to write again, please let us know how the two of you are doing.

  24. Oh no what an awful ordeal. You poor things. So good to hear there is no serious injuries. Being immobile is so difficult for people.

  25. Well I would be shooken up as well. That was scary and happened so fast with nothing you could do. Its a miracle both of you were seriously hurt. It just goes to show, how fast these accidents can happen. I'm praying for good results on the X-Ray.

  26. Gentle hugs to you. Does the clinic keep regular wheelchairs patients can borrow when they arrive? Some do.

You and your husband and family are in my prayers.

  27. What a frightful encounter, Sandra. It is really fortunate that more injuries were not caused, but I am sure the terror was injury enough. This whole process of taking care of two other beings with their serious issues, in addition to preserving your own health and sanity, must be more difficult and draining than we can imagine. Take good care of that rib. Very best wishes - David

  31. Oh Sandra, this is just awful. I can't even imagine what your body went through emotionally and physically. I wonder if one of your wonderful new friends would go with you next time.
I saw your next post and realized I missed this one. Good to hear nothing is broken. Lots of love coming your way and the pups all way "woof!" and wags.
