Small Changes, Big Payoffs

When I posted about Taking charge of ME to alleviate back/hip pain, LC from Retirement Daze commented
that she found a post that would be a lot of help to me.
The New Sixty post really helped me.   If you suffer back pain, read what she said, if not keep on bloggin.

I now Sit like the photo above, Sit straight when watching TV, NO SLUMPING.. Stand straight with shoulders back and I do not slump on the sofa with laptop in lap...

IN SHORT Sit/Stand Straight and Tall..... it is working for me.

Sit up Straight and Tall like ME....Jungle Gardens is where I live

AARP magazine article Small Changes, Big Payoffs, will also help with back and hip pain. Below 2 that I am attempting.

1. Tilt your rear view mirror, it will fource you sit up straight
2. Sit so you can High Five your computer screen

After 3 weeks of exercise in the pool, sitting up straight, cutting down on time on computer, the numbness is gone from my leg, and I am pain free except for OLD AGE stuff....

  13. very glad to hear it!

my laptop is low - not eye level. but i sit on one of those exercise balls instead of a chair. keeps me more movable and i don't get the stiff aches like i did if i camped in a chair. besides, i tell myself it's better for my core. :)

  14. Those are my rules for my back, too. I have to stick to it or I am in trouble.

  15. Yes, I can tell a big difference when I sit correctly. But I have a tendency to want to slump, thinking it is more comfortable. We also need to guard against sitting for too long a periods of time because of the potential blood clots in legs.

Now, what can we do for the old age stuff?

  16. You should have seen me as I was reading this post. Head up, shoulders back... suddenly realised how slumped over I am when sitting at the computer. Thanks for the tips and glad that you are feeling a lot better since your recent regime to improve the back and consequently the leg problem.

  20. I try to sit like this...but I get tired then lay on the couch. I do feel better when I sit up, glad you are making progress except with Old Age stuff:)

  21. Yes, how you sit can make a big difference. This reminds me I have to buy a new chair for my study because in a month or so they'll take away the one I've had on loan for 12 years... Rules and regulations, too complicated to go into!

  22. That's a great rule we should all follow, I tend to 'sag' a little when I sit due to my height. Especially having to sit all day at work, but I have a back support in my chair and I have to force myself to sit up straight. I find it that pilates helps me a lot to strengthen my ab and lower back muscles.
Enjoy the rest of your day!

  24. Gosh--I should have told you also about Arkansas Patti's post... Glad it is working for you also.

I found that when I was hiking, my lower back would start hurting... I decided that I was slumping while walking--since my walking sticks were too low. We changed the sticks and now I stand up straight. Guess what? NO back pain!!!!!

    Glad you are better.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  28. My grandson has been complaining about his back and legs because they changed chairs at his desk at work...I will show him this tip. I am glad it has helped you so blogging is not painful.

  29. I'm glad to hear your back and legs are feeling better, pain is not good. While I do sit up straight most of the time and keep my shoulders back while walking I am not good about it when I'm on the computer. I have that exact chair but it's at the other desk. I sit with my feet propped up on the desk and the keyboard on my lap. The catch is I don't stay seated for long periods. A half hour tops and I'm up doing other things.

  30. There are days where I am just sitting at work, typing and working on the computer. I asked for a 'stand up' keyboard tray. I can sit and type or I can stand and type. That has helped me keep off the ol' booty for at least a few times during the day. It's helped the back lots. Back pain is not fun!
Glad your legs are feeling better. Yup, old age sucks but so does the alternative I guess. LOL!

  33. Certainly some good tips here. They are similar to what we are told at the gym and what my Physio has said. I am glad that you are getting some relief. Mine has improved since I have been doing my physio exercises and gym three times a week.

  35. So glad you are better, there's nothing worse than a bad back, everything hinges on it (excuse the pun)
My Tom suffered from disc problems for years and even endured a plaster cast in the 70's
As for all the other old age problems best not get me going. lol
