On the way to Staples - SPCA park

Bishop Animal Shelter (SPCA) is 40 wooded and very beautiful acres and is funded by a trust fund left by the Bishops. It is a no kill shelter dogs, cats, fowl and a few other small animals.

The gates are only during certain hours and are guard by two stone statues.

The sad part is the animal turn in sign, I always want to cry. But below is the wonderful shelter the animals live in. They are still in kennels, but if you enlarge you can see that both sides have screen porches and the animals are all exercised every day.

Above is the pond where the geese live along with a few raccoon and possums. Once I watched a racoon, open the gate, go inside and go down to the pond to wash his food. this was BEFORE my camera addiction started. the rest of these photos are the trees around the pond. If you enlarge above you can see the pink Spoonbill on the bird house...

We rescued our beloved Cooper, who has gone over the rainbow bridge, at this shelter. He had been there for a year because he was 7 years old and no one wanted him. We did. Click here to see Cooper

  1. I wonder if I can find interesting sights to photograph if I go to Staples...lol
That is an awesome shelter. Not only no kill but gorgeous. Are people free to roam around the 40 acres?

  2. The shelter is in a lovely environment and I imagine the dogs are well cared for as they wait for homes. I would find it very sad to visit and see the dogs that are never chosen. We took in a couple of dogs when we lived in Italy that had come from relatives. There are always abandoned dogs roaming around and we have to keep the high, heavy gate shut for security. It's a sad situation. I would love a dog, but our cat is a big responsibility to take care of when we go away so it's not possible. I would definitely choose a dog from a shelter if I had the lifestyle to be able to own a dog.

  6. I love those trees...and at least it is a no kill shelter. I cannot stand to go to shelters...always just want to bawl. Our other dog, Keesha, came from a shelter.

  7. This is an amazing shelter, all this property, and it is beautiful. We have nothing like this around here. About an hour and a half away is the closest. That is where we got Sunny & Cher, it is also a no kill. The sad thing with no kills is that they are usually full and cannot take any more, unless more people adopt. The rest of the shelters around here...I don't think they have any property other than the building and the parking lot. I LOVE this big old tree!

  8. Your SPCA is so much prettier than the one closest to me. The dogs are in kennels and are exercised everyday as well. Right next door is the county shelter and it's not as kind as SPCA. That is where we found Rocket and I couldn't leave him. :)
I can see why you stopped here.:) It looks so pretty!

  15. That's a really nice looking animal shelter! My older gal Two was a drop off that we rescued. Someone dropped her off near our house along with her 8 brothers! A rescue group came and got the others but I got Two before they took off with them.

  20. What a beautiful place, both for the animals and visitors. I love to see places like this that really care about the animals that come to them. Those screened porches are great and I really like the fence with the two pups standing guard.
