Discus Fish

Since the last time I visited my doctors office, they added a giant fish tank, about the size of a love seat. There were 4 of these beauties slowly floating around, and when I walked up to the tank, they came to the side and stared me in the eye. I said to the lady at the desk, they are talking to me. She said that belongs to our new doctor. He hand feeds them, they are looking for food. She said they are Discus Fish.

I did research and found they are native to the Amazon River in South America.. Wiki info here
They are expensive and require much attention to keep them alive.. I say put them back in the Amazon where they belong.  I am claustrophobic and can't stand small spaces. Looking at fish in a bowl or tank drives me crazy...

They’re supposed to be soothing, I think. I suppose it depends on how much room they have in an aquarium... I agree it wouldn’t work if they seem cramped.

The fish are probably farm raised, not knowing any different from aquarium to rivers. As long as they're not ignored & fed I see no difference in any pet.

Hello,

I agree with Anni, most of these aquarium fish are farm raised. They are not used to being in the wild. The are pretty and colorful fish.
Take care, enjoy your Sunday!

What is said above is true... but in many ways, I am with you! Just because they can be farmed, does it mean they should be?.. oh, ethical dilemma and the year is barely begun! YAM xx

They sure are pretty! Although I love seeing beautiful aquariums I've always felt kind of sorry for the fish being in such small spaces.

I don't have strong feelings either way...never had the desire to have an aquarium. They are not furry and don't give kisses so don't appeal. I guess it could be said they don't wake you up at 3:00 in the morn cause they are lonesome, or don't try to grab the bacon out of your hand.

What a post, I love it! and have been reading your link. They live a long time! and I bet they are like zebras, each one has a different pattern. Glad you risked a bit of claustrophobia just for US. Were there otherfish in there? If so, these must have been the star. I don't think I have ever seen or heard of them. interesting how they can feed their babies mucous from their skin. GREAT post today!

Interesting! I never felt much empathy for fish; in fact, aquariums generally creep me out.
My 'starter-husband' (Troy's dad) was into the Beta fighting fish for a while. Unfortunately, they all perished when we were away and the house lost power during a bad winter storm. (Remembering now, maybe I do have a smidgen of empathy.)

At least it has a huge tank to swim around in. And people like you to check out.

Lovely fish that have a calming effect.
Hope you have a great day.
I'm happy to see the sunshine this morning.
Rain coming at the end of the week.
We are suppose to have a tech support call on Tuesday for our email situation. I think we have big problems.
Ebay is going pretty good but it sure takes a lot of time.
Still watching church on line...and life goes on..
Take care

I love aquariums they are so peaceful and beautiful
Madi was quite agile in that tunnel/tree, inside the bottom where you see her was a space up to the next level.

Perhaps the Dr put them there to soothe the patients waiting impatiently...LOL!...:)jp

They are interesting even though i don’t want the work that comes with keeping an aquarium .

Maybe they are supposed to have a calming effect on the patients while they wait to see the doctor:) At our local Scheel's, they have several floor to ceiling round aquarium tanks. They have quite the variety of colorful fish in them - very fascinating to watch. Now they DO allow dogs in Scheel's so we think Mom needs to take us there.

They say looking at fish in an aquarium is relaxing! To everyone in the world EXCEPT YOU!!! I like looking at them but Summer used to keep fish and they are a lot of work! I'm sticking to my cats!

They are pretty. Wade had an aquarium and I have said that when the fish die I'll get rid of it. It has one angel fish and one algae eater both of whom refuse to die.

Beautiful, but I agree with you. They need to be where they belong, back in the Amazon.
