The One and Only Avocado YUM

 Look  how big the DELICIOUS one and ONLY avocado from this week is. This is avocado #8 this year, drought made all the buds fall off, and the squirrels are the first 7, until this one hit the roof like a bomb and I beat them to it. 

We had it for dinner last night. Yum

Drought and the Avocada Tree

 

The back yard is scorching in the hot sun, high temps, July Temps in last two days of March and getting hotter, mid to high 90's and some days feels like temps reach into the hundreds, IN APRIL and no measurable rain since Milton the storm.. These are buds, the leaves come out and push off the old, and the buds make the fruit. We doubt it will bare fruit this year.

The ground is thick with buds and each bud if full of pollen, the tree is full of BEES sucking up pollen and the high winds blow the buds like rain and spread the pollen on the dry dirt and in the pool... so UNLIKE our Florida a few years ago

Bigger than a coffee pot

 

Avocado as big as a coffee pot, fell in our yard,

Our neighbor Willie, said if it fell on your head, that would be Hard.

I bit the dust,

Said I will use my own shopping bags if I must!

The problem is, my memory cells are dead,

I keep walking in the store, without a thought in my head,

TO BRING IT WITH ME..

NOTE! the blue and white canvas bag is 20 years old. It was yellow from age. I cleaned it with a

wet Mr Clean Magic Eraser and it worked like MAGIC!

Avocado ART is the answer

 

The answer to yesterday's question, What is the background? Where did I sit? How did I do this?

I saw a sunbeam and a shadow on the chair by the pool.

Sat the avocado in the shadow and here it is.

Bigger than a Tea Kettle -Choquette Avocado

 

Bob picked this avocado Wed., and the leaf came with it, I ran in the house looking for something to show how big the fruit is.  I wanted to talk to you about our avocado because many of you have asked questions about how large they are, how green they are, how yellow the inside is.

 The tree we have, was planted from a seed from a giant avocado given to Bob by a friend.  This info I found makes sense, because the friend is a native born Floridian and lives in farm country. Make that orchard country.

The above GIANT Green Fruit is a Choquette Avocado, that originated in South Florida in 1934.

  Unless you are from Florida or the West Indies (i.e. the Greater and the Lesser Antilles), you might not have heard about the Choquette avocado. The Choquette avocado originated in south Florida in 1934. It is likely a product of a cross between Guatemalan and West Indian types. They are named after the owner of the property on which the first tree grew in January 1929, Remi D. Choquette Sr.

The skin stays bright green even when ripe, they can weigh up to 30 oz. or 850 grams or 1.875 lbs. and the inside is bright yellow. I don't know if they taste the same because this is the only type I have ever eaten.

Believe it Or not

 

The squirrels and racoons are still bombarding us with avocados, and I pray they will knock them all down and get out of town.

Bob is picking them 2 at a time because that is a lot of fruit to eat. I read somewhere that I could cut them up, mashed with salt/lemon, and keep it in the fridge.  THIS IS NOT TRUE!

Well, it IS true! But it tasted good fresh, but the next day, I gagged when I ate it, gave it to Bob, Who Eats Any and All Things, and he said toss it. I did!  I decided not to try freezing it because that will turn out Not to be True. Now after the 87 days it takes for them to ripen, Bob gets 3/4 and I take the quarter, sprinkle with salt and put slices on unsalted saltines.  I am so proud of how I scooped out the whole inside to this one, even if the leftovers were trashed

Avocado News for Yous

 

It's thankful Thursday over at Brians Home and today we are thankful

for 4 of these big Avocado this week. Each is 6 inches long (15 cm)

we are thankful they could be picked without a LADDER.

Good News! In the past I just could not eat this fruit. Now I can! and they are free.

I saw smaller than these at Walmart for 2.98 each.

We are Thankful they are FREE to ME

 Bob was raving about how good his tasted, and I speared a slice and put it on an unsalted saltine, and it was so yummy, I ate another.

More Good news because I can add them to my YES for IBS list of fruits and they are on the soluble list and perfect for breakfast.

Breakfast for IBS should be all soluble foods going into an empty stomach.

IBS means small quantities, many times a day. Breakfast from the Safe List Only.

We are thankful I developed a taste for them in my Old Age.

Great news is avocado can be frozen. As soon as these ripen, I will cut one in small chunks and add to my slushy.

Yes, Of course I will tell you how that works out!

First Pick Avocado Nature Friday

July 18, 2020, first Pick of the year. We count 7 that he can reach to pick. Others we wait for the squirrels to knock them down or for them to drop. 

This is the perfect size, they get HUGE if they stay on the tree.

We don't know why we have no squirrels eating them, this is the first year ever Bob picked one before we found them with bite marks and on the ground.

Until 2 years ago, we had so many we had to give them away. For some reason, maybe lack of water, there are only a few. He grew the tree from a seed.

OR NOT...

This post has been in drafts since July 18th. We found out why the squirrels are not eating them. they are hard as rocks and taste bitter, even after it shriveled and looked ripe.

We threw the ones Bob could not eat out in the front yard, and usualy overnight they are gone by squirrles, possums and raccoons. 

Two days later they were still there, with only 2 bites out of each one.

I googled and it says if you heat an avacdo, as in cook it, it will turn bitter.

All the fruit on the tree has been cooking since April in horrible heat. we think that is the cause. 
HEAT WAVE. I know this is true because the heatwave has turned me bitter

These three are hanging so low that I can almost touch them, Bob is taller and can almost and my son Daniel at 6'5'' could pick them without a ladder.

The tree is full but they are so far not edible

Color me embarassed, I checked and every August for years I do a post on this tree.

What ever we call them, they have been and still are wreaking havoc on avocados that weigh 2 to 4 pounds each...

I argue with Bob that they need the fruit more than we do.. he disagrees... the big problem is...

Jake kept putting on weight, he never has before.. then we figured out the Satanás Squirrelies are knocking down the tiny golf ball sized and Jake is eating them seed and all... I just caught Baby after she ate half of a 2 pound one.

Once Upon a Giant Avocado Seed

Once upon a time, a really, really LARGE avocado fell on the roof of MadSnapper's house 

Bob, the man who planted the seed, that grew the avocado tree from a seed,  ate the giant avocado. 

All by himself. With a spoon and salt and pepper.

Bob handed MadSnapper the SEED. 

The biggest seed from the biggest avocado, we have ever seen. 

This avocado was ginormous 

So was the SEED...

In the search to show you how big the seed is, MS held it in her hand, sat it by a teacup, next to her lens and dropped it in a cup... Alas, I have no photo of the avocado because Bob gave it way before I could snap it.

Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Avocado

While wiping the kitchen table, I saw something flutter by and down to the ground, walked over to see who stopped by and there were Mr and Mrs Cardinal walking and grabbing things off the ground, suddenly a male Jay showed up, then another male Jay.. I watched them eat for about 10 minutes , opened the door causing them to leave  and you can see what they were eating in above photos.

They were eating tiny buds off the avocado tree, thousands of the flowers and buds came down on the ground from 4 inches of rain and a lot of wind. Woo HOO on the rain, we loved it.

Can you find the blow fly?

Looks like another bumper crop of fruit for the squirrels and birds in a few months. Sunday morning, I was totally entertained by two jays while making up the bed. One sat on the sill, 3 feet from my nose, the other stood on the rim to the rain barrel. once again they were belly up to the avocado buffet.

In spite of our Silly Squirrels (I will no print what Bob  calls the little rascals) you can see the last bounty from the tree on our counter this week.

Can you guess what this is? It is Amazing and the first we have ever seen.

It is the seed that was in this three pounder, if you enlarge you can see where the roots of the seed were starting to come out the top of the fruit. If this was planted in the ground, we would have another TREE and I don't want the one we have....

BTW I DID LOOK AT EVERY SINGLE POST THAT WAS IN MY READER FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS, SO I DID NOT MISS ANYTHING. HAD A GREAT WEEKEND OFF

Thump! Thump! Thump!

TWO QUART POT

I hear, Thump! Thump! Thump! I yell.."Bob, the Triplets just fell" and race outside. On the ground under the tree were three of the largest avocados we have ever seen.

Perspective shot... Bob's hand, a plate, a frying pan, as big as our coffee pot.   this one weighed in at 3 pounds, is 10 inches long and around the middle is 16 inches.

The triplets we have watched for weeks are still hanging, as you can see above.

Odd thing is.... THEY say a tree grown from a SEED will never bare fruit unless grafted.... NOT TRUE we have proof in our yard, 11 year old tree from a seed, and all he did was plant it. Not everything we read is TRUE.

 The thing is that *&%^$$ of a squirrel is taking a bite and knocking them down. Five down on the ground and one left half eaten in the tree just on Saturday and hundreds of the golf ball sized babies were destroyed before they could grow to adults.
