Pony Tail Palm Tree

 

I took a photo of the Ponytail Palm that is full grown to show you what the one on the stump will look like. This is across the street and down two houses from the house that put my stump decoration on the trash pile. 

Did you know that if you have a big tree like this or any palm, landscapers will pay thousands of dollars to buy them from you. They have a big round cutting blade that drops down over them and picks up a giant football and the tree and they carefully haul it to the house that will pay 10's of thousands to get their house to look like it was always there. MONEY Talks. Back in 1986, at our St Pete house, a man knocked on the door and said will you sell me your palm? I will give you 300.00 for it. that was like 900.00 now. We kept the tree. Just so you know, you may have buried CASH in your yard and not know it.

Curb Side Find Part Three

 

The Pony Tail Palm found on the curb, now has 6 siblings. I yanked a piece of pothos that was traveling accross the sidewalk, went to the back yard fern and pothos and whild florida jungle plants and yanke 5 long ropes of varigated pothos.

This is what happens in Florida if you are old and can't keep up with yard work, there is a stump under that hump and I happen to love ferns and wild things, so I love it.. I did not plant it, it just grew there and now with 2 weeks of rain, wow is the jungle growing.

It took me 1 hour of sweating to plant all the plants. This is what Beau and I see every morning when we leave for his walk, except we leave at daybreak, 6:15 to miss walking in the sun.

Now there are 7 pots there and I don't forget to water them because I see it every day. Yes, you have seen the photo of me and Beau before, I just popped in in and covered the garbage can to show you where we walk at the starting line of our daily walks.

You can see the trunk of our beloved oak tree and the staghorn hanging from a limb and of course a garbage can.. I mean who doesn't have one???

Soon there will be many beautiful flowers here, in fact all the yellow moss rose had blooms by noon of the same day but i was to hot to take photos. I love this stump, we saved 500 dollars by leaving it there.

Curbside Find Part Two

 

After I dragged home the three palms found on the curb trash pile, I dragged out 6 empty pots from various places and sat them there to await what ever I chose to fill them with.

I love this pony tail palm but will not let it know that because it might Jynx It.. It prefers full sun all the time, but will grow well with 6 hours of sun, and will even grow inside, but without sun it grows really slow. 

 

I hit Home depot Garden Shop at 7 am, hoping to miss the worst of our heat wave but while looking for what I wanted and the best price and bang for my few bucks, the sweat was running in my eyes and I could hardly see the show going on. The flowers were full of small birds. They were flying between the aisles at my knee levels and twittering and singing.  I did stop and drip sweat while I smiled at them. 

The first thing I saw at the nursery was a pony tail the same size as this one, on sale for 39.95.

I ended up with 1 Mexican Heather for the big empty pot, and 8. 3 inch plants in  the handle with the container for 12.95 and a bag of potting soil. When I came home it was to hot to work, so I dumped my plants on the stump and waited until Tuesday am just as the sun rose over the trees and HIT ME. I had walked Beau first . The thought of filling 5 pots for the stump and one in the back yard was daunting.

No you are not crazy, there are not 2 trees, I cut the new plants and tree from another photo because i have way to many photos

Another Curb Side Find

 

Above is the sidewalk Beau and I were walking on, the house that had these plants at the curb in a pile of trash, is the big trees right center. The corner on the left under the big tree is Beau's PeeMail box. Every dog in the corner leaves a message there sooner or later.

While walking Beau, I found three pots with palms in them, sitting on the trash pile. they had been in the yard for years and were not doing well in the shade under the trees.

 They were looking pitiful. I came home and took the car back and had Bob lift them in the back. The middle one is a Pony Tail Palm, the two others are palms but there are five similar and to ID will have to wait until they grow a little. It could be Cane Palm, Areca, Fantail, Coconut or a Cat Palm. I am leaning towards Cat Palm Or Cane, very similar.

 All of them will live indoors in pots, or grow to be trees outside.

Cat Tail Maybe

Each of the these 2 pot had many dead fronds and i forgot to take photos before I cleaned them up. They will all remain in pots, since it is easier to care for them.. They like to dry out completely and have easy to drain loam or the dry sand of Florida. They will get root rot if to much water. Perfect for drought and now I know why drought doesn't harm all our palms.

Below is what the pony tail will look like in yard or indoors. the pony tail I found is worth 45 dollars as it is.. the bigger they get the more valuable. 

Below is Cat Palm indoor and outdoor in a pot and if you plant it in the ground in Florida it will take over the property in a few years. taller than the roof line.
