Pony Tail Palm Tree

I took a photo of the Ponytail Palm that is full grown to show you what the one on the stump will look like. This is across the street and down two houses from the house that put my stump decoration on the trash pile.

Did you know that if you have a big tree like this or any palm, landscapers will pay thousands of dollars to buy them from you. They have a big round cutting blade that drops down over them and picks up a giant football and the tree and they carefully haul it to the house that will pay 10's of thousands to get their house to look like it was always there. MONEY Talks. Back in 1986, at our St Pete house, a man knocked on the door and said will you sell me your palm? I will give you 300.00 for it. that was like 900.00 now. We kept the tree. Just so you know, you may have buried CASH in your yard and not know it.

I had no idea! But I once did see a big machine that would pull a big tree up and out.

I agree, I would rather have the tree. But it's nice to know other people value it too.

That seems kind of crazy. I would keep the tree too. I'm hoping that after they pull a tree out of someone's yard they fill in the hole.

It really is quite crazy that we raze every tree to build the subdivision and then invest a fortune in masquerading that we didn’t.

Yes, that happened to me once; my Sydney home had two enormous oil palms, plus several mature cane palms - and I was offered quite a substantial sum of money. Like you, though, I preferred to keep my trees. I mean, what would one have to do to fill the spaces?! YAM xx

I did not know this....

Hello,
I am glad you kept your palm. I would rather have the tree too.
They get huge, considering here they are just house plants.
Take care, enjoy your day!

I like David's comment - very sage. When I first left home (several decades ago) one of our rural neighbours had built an expensive new house in the middle of a paddock, and got a mature oak tree pollarded and moved from the old place to the new. All that went in the grounds was the trunk and the stubs of branches. I cannot for the life of me imagine how it was ever going to survive (and I don't think it did) - they should have left it being magnificent where it had started it's life.

Wow. I really want a mature Japanese maple or a full-grown Magnolia, but I'm not willing to take out a second mortgage on our home. Tom's all willing to get us a little one -- or like Jean and Andy, order one online. But seriously, neither of us will be around long enough to see it mature.

I have never seen a Pony Tail palm before, and I live in Florida! Maybe I've seen one and didn't know that was what it was! It's very interesting, and I hope yours will grow big and strong and beautiful like that someday...or did you say you planned to keep it in a pot? Either way, I am sure it will be beautiful. It's amazing what they can do with the equipment that is available to landscapers these days. I guess you can do most anything if you have enough money to pay for it. I've just had to learn to live with the trees that grow here by the Master Gardener's expertise. There are some that I wish I could pick up and move to a different location, but sometimes we just have to be happy to "bloom where we are planted" and be done with it. LOL. I hope you have a lovely day today!

Wow, I had no idea those plants can get that big. That is very interesting about landscapers buying them.

Very interesting-looking tree, I can't recall ever having seen anything like it. Of course we don't have palm trees here (except some in big pots, in summer, and probably spending the winters in a greenhouse), but I mean even from TV I can't recall having seen any like this.

That tree is amazing. I have never seen one like that before. I especially love the "spikes" growing out of the Hair-do..haha
I really hate to see old mature trees taken down so new homes can be built. the landscape is so bleak then. Give me my tree in the front yard..roots gone wild...and all. Love the birds and squirrels that enjoy it too.

Cool tree. I didn't know that's what it is called.
There may be buried cash on our property?! Hmmm ... good idea. Now I've got to get out the metal detector and start searching. 💙

that is interesting about the pony tail palm tree. There is a house up the street from us where the owner had three enormous trees brought in by those fancy trucks and planted in the yard. Mom was always amazed that they actually rooted well and adapted to their new home. That was years ago and they are still big and healthy.

It's a fascinating tree. Can't believe people would actually come to a home owners house and ask to buy their tree.

I saw one of those machines on TV once. Amazing how they work. I have never seen that kind of palm tree before and that’s a new one on me, never heard of buying trees out of your own yard before.
