Memory...or Lack Thereof

Parlor Manatee Historical Village Cracker House

I am using this photo because it is OLD like my MEMORY and I find it impossible to create a post without including a photo.

My Lapse in Memory This Week ....

Tuesday morning, I carefully remembered to take my Debit card to the YMCA because the plan was to stop in Walmart and pick up TWO items that were on my list but did not come home with me on Saturday.
I forgot to lock the KIA at the YMCA, leaving said Debit card inside.
I put my  towel in locker at YMCA and started to the pool holding the BAG which should have been in the locker.
Left the YMCA and Right  towards home, not Left towards WM and had to turn around which caused us to be parked for 5 minutes behind a handicap bus that was loading a wheel chair.
I Came home and left wet suit and towel on counter NOT hanging outside to dry.
my morning  PLAN was CVS, Winn Dixie,  Dollar General and 40 dollars worth of gas in the Kia and visit Rich and find a bathing suit....

1st, the plan to leave at 9 went awry until 10 when Bob came home from the park and I surfaced from the computer running an hour late.
I did my list without my watch and rings since I left them on the bathroom counter .

Thursday am at 4, Bob comments... "coffee sure is weak today"
It seems I put water in the pot, set it on auto, put the filter in MINUS the coffee and we had a really nice pot of HOT WATER. I came home and had my cable bill in my email and went to pay on line and it was DOUBLE, seems I did not pay it last month.

Sweet Memories...

I found  my old sketch book in the closet this week. Lower left above, is a folder I made at age 16 by stapling 2 pieces of poster board together..

these were done with magic markers
In 1960 my Dad's sister, Aunt Helen commissioned me to make wooden figures to hang on her daycare walls
Above collage is just a few examples of the ones I drew on  plywood and my brother cut them out, I painted them and she hung them on the daycare walls.

In 1975 I bought a book that said Teach yourself to do water-painting

Eagle and the Lion were my only attempts.

Florida Redneck Medical Dictionary.... I found this in a drawer... so watch out, there will be more.

Artery ........... the study of painting

Tablet...... a small table

Appalachian Mountan Preacher

In the last part of the year in 1952, my Dad and Mother, brother and I moved from Savannah, Georgia to Clear Creek, KY for daddy to attend Clear Creek Mountain Bible School.  We lived in the shadow of Pine Mountain and drove long winding, switchback roads to Pineville, Ky for shopping.

Above is my dad in 1959 as he looked as pastor of Sloans Valley Baptist Church, Sloans Valley Ky. Daddy graduated in 1957 from the Bible school and we left DeWitt Baptist Church that he had pastored while attending school and went to Sloans Valley.

Last week by blog friends George and Betsy were visitng Pine Mountain State Park and they took the time to go find my childhood home and email me photos.

ALL PHOTOS TODAY were taken by  Besty, Just for ME!

Thank you Betsy the photos that have are the pilot light of my memories of a wonderful childhood in the Applachian Mountains of Kentucky.

The name of the school is now changed. In the early 50's  it was called Preachers School. The school gave preachers called to the ministry and had not finished  high school and could not attend seminary's, the chance to get their high school diploma while they worked on their seminary classes. Daddy, born 1913, quit school in 8th grade due to his father having a stroke and his mother had 7 children and a man in a wheel chair to care for. He became the man of the house in 1927.

The odd thing is, all the buildings look exactly like they did more than 50 years ago. I recieved my first kiss in the above building. At that time it was a reccreation hall. I was 13 so it was not that much of a kiss, but I still remember it.

As I looked through all the photos Betsy sent to me, the tears of joyful memories poured down my face. This is Kelly Hall and where they attended classes and we build snow forts on that lawn

The above photo is the way my brother and I looked as we walked over this bridge. (oops! make that the way we looked when HE walked accross this bridge, I went the long way round)

More happy memories waited on me when I found this song on Blind Pig and The Acorn blog post about Shape Note singing and  memories of my dad baptizing people in the river in Kentucky in the 50"s flooded my soul. I found the video on YouTube and it's perfect. I learned Shape Note Singing in Kentucky and did not even know what it was until now.
These photos taken by a friend truly prove the saying.

"photos are the pilot light of memories"

Thank you to my blog friends for all these sweet memories.

You May Be From The South if.....

As you will see from the photos today, in the South we need to be told the Obvious .

You may be from the south if........

Never “do” anything…Always be “fixin’ to” do something

Remember y’all is singular. All y’all is plural

Have been known to say "Hey, y'all watch this!"

If your mother said "Save all manner of bacon grease. If it can't be fried in bacon grease, it ain't worth cooking, let alone eating"

You might be from the South, If you understand "The Ten Commandments of Grits

1. Thou shalt not put syrup on thy Grits.

2. Thou shalt not eat Cream of Wheat and call it Grits; for this is blasphemy.

3. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors Grits.

4. Thou shalt only use Salt, Butter and Cheese as toppings for thy Grits.

5. Thou shalt not eat Instant Grits.

6. Thou shalt not put syrup on thy Grits.

7. Thou shalt not put syrup on thy Grits.

8. Thou shalt not call grits IT, grits are them, plural.

9. Thou shalt not put sugar on thy Grits either.

10. Thou shalt not put sugar or syrup on thy Grits

I LOVE GRITS, how many of you eat grits? or even ever heard of them?

All this falderol over southern words has netted us a new bloggin friend. Tipper made a comment yesterday's post see her blog Blind Pig and The Acorn for more info on Applachia. Thanks Tipper

Some linemen were busy putting up telephone poles through a farmer's fields. The farmer ordered them off his land, whereupon they showed him a paper giving them the right to plant poles wherever they pleased. Not long afterward a big and vicious bull charged the linemen. The old farmer sat on a nearby fence and yelled, "Show him yer papers, darn ye, show him yer papers

Sandra's Sweet Memories

Friday night, my husband and I were watching a movie on TV. The theme song playing at the end was so beautiful we watched the words fly by and listened to the entire song. The auto harp was featured and it brought back so many memories.

My Dad was the Pastor of a church in Kentucky that very much resembled this one that I found on the internet. From age 10 to 15, I spent the happiest years of my life in 2 tiny little Baptist churches in the great state of KY. The church had a piano, but not always someone to play it. That is when the auto harp kicked in. We sang all the old hymns and harmonized with that auto harp. When the movie ended, I pulled up my good friend YouTube. The is what I found.

Farther Along, on auto harp, the words are at the bottom of the post. Sing along, I did and AM. this is one of the songs my Dad and I did as a duet, many times.

I do realize Brad sounds better than the auto harp and some of you may never have heard one.

Sing with Brad Paisley, don't forget to harmonize

Tempted and tried we're oft made to wonder
Why it should be thus all the day long
While there are others living about us
Never molested though in the wrong
Chorus
Farther along we'll know all about it
Farther along we'll understand why
Cheer up my brother live in the sunshine
We'll understand it all by and by
When death has come and taken our loved ones
It leaves our home so lonely and drear
And then do we wonder why others prosper
Living so wicked year after year
Repeat chorus

When we see Jesus coming in glory
When he comes down from his home in the sky
Then we shall meet him in that bright mansion
We'll understand it all by and by
