Good Fence Thursday - Fogartyville

Since I only have upwards of 100,00 photos (I could do a post a day the rest of my life and not run out) I decided to take the two cameras and go to Fogartyville Cemetery and Find my Mothers grandparents, Della Hollingsworth Hale and Finley Hale's tombstones.

......the cemetery is only a few blocks from my home and I thought this would take only a few minutes.

Of course I snapped the sign and then inside the fence,
the BIG view and then an hour later I drove out with 150 photos and not one single shot of my ancestors tombstones.

Just so you know........ If on a beautiful sunny day you decide to go find the tombstones of your great grandparents,

DO NOT take your morning water pill before you go, because GUESS WHAT?

there are NO potties in a cemetery.

I found the tombstones on the Internet...there are 2538 graves in this Historical Cemetery. Who knew I did not have to spend the morning snapping over 300 photos when all the time it was there from my chair.

JOINING GOOD FENCE THURSDAY WITH TexWisGirlat The Runaround Ranch Report Pop on over to see fences from around the world.

Della and Finley were the parents of my maternal grandmother.... the dates blow my mind.

Castle's In Florida?

The original post title was  Drive By Shooting at Local Cemetery.... BUT I was afraid the cyber police might come looking for me.

\
Why would  MadSnapper take a photo of the entrance to a cemetery?

BECAUSE MS was sitting at the stop light traffic signal (which do you say), THERE IT WAS. Right outside my window. SNAP!
Manasota was built in 1925 and my grandfather shares this cemetery with John Ringling and 7 of the Flying Wallendas, from Ringling Brothers Circus.

Cemetery Commentary

the cemetery where my ancestors rest, was built in the then town of Forgartyville by the Fogarty Family.

Fogartyville is full of beautiful architecture.

The rusted door, so beautiful

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
John 11:25

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”  1 Cor 15:54

I do hope no one is offended by this post, I love old cemeterys, they are commentarys on lives from the past and present, peaceful in appearance, steeped in sadness, full of memories both happy and sad.

Take My Advice! Really!

Saturday AM, what do I want to DO today?
My thoughts were...since I only have upwards of 30 to 40,000 photos (I could do a post a day the rest of my life and not run out) I decided to take the two cameras and go to Fogartyville Cemetery and Find Della Hollingsworth Hale and Finley Hale's tombstones.

Della and Finley were my mothers grandparents.

I am sitting at a stop sign staring at the above signs and thinking,

Well, Duh! the signs say go Right OR Left, right? What if i want to go Straight? and I did... I chose Right.

......the cemetery is only a few blocks from my home and I thought this would take only a few minutes.

I have no idea WHY I can't just drive in a cemetery, find the tombstones and leave... Do YOU??

Of course I snapped the sign and then inside the fence,
the BIG view and then an hour later I drove out with 150 photos and not one single shot of my ancestors tombstones.

(need I mention I took shots of the traffic signal and the bank on the way to the cemetery?)
Here is the advice part..... If on a beautiful sunny day you decide to go find the tombstones of your great grandparents,
DO NOT take your morning water pill before you go, because GUESS WHAT?

there are NO potties in a cemetery.

I got so caught up in snapping I forgot to look for the tombstones and then it was TO LATE....

I had a decision to make!

run for home OR the nearest park, both of which are 3 minutes away, both have a potty. I chose the park with a potty, only 3 minutes away, I left the park with another 100 photos, but that will be another story.

TO BE CONTINUED..... enjoy the peace while you can.....
HERE YOU GO .... I found the tombstones on the Internet...there are 2538 graves in this Historical Cemetery. Who knew I did not have to spend the morning snapping over 300 photos when all the time it was there from my chair.

I could have saved myself the trip, but then I would not have 150 photos from the cemetery and another 100 from Bray Park.... NO, I will not post ALL of them. MAYBE

Scottish Descendant, Looking Back

As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with a single tombstone seen from Rye Road in East Bradenton. Many, many times my grandmother, my mother and her sister would stop the car and point out through the orange grove and tell me the story of the man who was buried there in 1884. We had no access because it was private property and could only see the tombstone and a 5ft x 5ft iron picket fence that encircled it.

They told me the man buried there was my grandfathers, grandfather, Sir Thomas Urquhart, born in Loch Ness, Scotland. Thomas had a daughter, Lula Alice Urquhart (1862-1951) who turned out to be possibly the meanest woman ever born. but that is another story.
Lula married Hampton Overby and had a son, Albert Overby
Albert (1904-1953) and Alva Hale Overby (1904-1968) had two daughters, my mother Mary Lucille and Patricia.
The three of them told me the man under that tombstone, was my great, great grandfather.
Hampton Overby my great grandfather (on the left), Policeman, Atlanta, Ga

the Rest of the story was that during the first world war, a letter was received by Lula stating the last of the heirs of Thomas Urquhart Sr had died and the property would go to the state, if Thomas Urquhart or his heirs did not come to Scotland to claim it, it would pass to the state. Lula did not want to cross the ocean into a war zone, so the property went to the state.

The photo of the castle ruins, is one my broker brought back when she and her husband toured Scotland in 1992, Clyde actually climbed down a cliff to take pictures for me.
Urquhart Castle lies in ruins, and is now open to the public. I have no idea if this story is true, we have no written proof because the letter was lost per my family stories.
I am still fascinated by the story and was very surprised last year when I drove my friend Diane to show her the tombstone out in the grove. We found the grave open to the public, it seems the grove died, and they enclosed the old Rye Cemetery and I was at last able to walk up and touch the tombstone
YES I TOOK PICTURES.
The inscription reads:
Thomas Urquhart Died April 16, 1884, Blessed are they who die in the Lord.

I am so blessed that my great, great Grandparents believed in God and all of my ancestors handed that belief down to ME.
