Feast or Famine

The idiom, Feast or Famine, means to much of something vs. to little of something. For today it applies to our rainfall the past 2 days.

The photo above is a 10 miles drive from our house. We had no flooding where we live.

This photo is from MSN and is 14 miles south of us. We live in Sarasota/Bradenton and we got 3 inches, Sarasota got 5 to 6... 

We have had drought for 4 years now, Tuesday was a drought ender that our Weather Guy described as Historic Rain! 

RAIN

deluge

All of these mean the same, rain was

Present In Great Quantity! And it came with Booms and Flashes!

We are thankful for the rain and sorry for those who had losses from it. We were blessed with just enough to fill our pool to the very top.

Drizzlosis and ME

 

I found this word on the Blog, An English Girl Rambles and borrowed it to tell you

how I felt when I took this video.

We had five minutes of glorious rain and I felt drizzlosis while standing with the door open to the front porch. 

It might show better on Youtube. I have about lost my religion trying to upload and messing about with YouTube. Why do they makes things so hard?

Blessed By Raindrops

 

Standing on the front porch, the sound of raindrops playing their music in my ears, I lifted the potted fern from the porch and out into the rain and stood watcing the fronds lifted toward the rain. 

Six minutes and the rain stopped. I snapped the photo on the right side below and stood watching as the sun painted the dark green the bright green the rain had brought.

This amazing phenomenon of rain turning to sun is the normal for Florida, we are in the sub tropics of the state only 40 miles from the tropics.

Hot sun and cool rain make everything grow like we live in a giant green house.

The normal rainfall comes almost every afternoon during the warm months, but for months we 

had no rain.

Sunshine and Shadows, two of my favorite things.

A few hours later the rain came once again, this time for an hour.

We received a total of 1.75 inches in two days.

Thank you, Lord.

Yay for Rain and More rain

We are in day 7 of Rain and loving it. We are in sub-tropics, this means rain comes in bursts, 10 to 15 minutes put down 3 inches of rain. 

In other climates this would mean MUD and puddles for days. Here it flooded the yard, ran down the driveway, stood in the street gutters. 15 minutes later, it quit, the photo below was taken about 30 minutes after the rain quit.

You can see the ground is dry. Another hour and you can even tell it rained.  Oue soil is black sand and soaks like a sponge, then dries. It is very rare to get rain that last all day.

An hour later, the cloudburst came and did it again.   It pours and quits and pours and quits and the sun comes out and bakes it dry. It also can be pouring like this and the sun will be shining at the same time.

Normal weather is a cloudburst each day and that is what creates the hot steamy humid weather that makes the jungles grow.

THE RAIN came!

 

Thursday The Rain Came! 2 inches in 20 minutes, leaving droplets on Elephant ears and making patterns in the pool.

 We are sub tropics, our rain comes in Buckets dumped all at one time. Sun comes out and repeat the bucket dump. It is rare to have a day of drizzle. We get Sun and RAIN. Sun and Rain

Friday we got 3 inches and were doing a happy dance! 5 inches Two days!

Along came Saturday!

and another 7 inches of rain. Total Rain 3 Days 12 inches!

Since this is Florida, the sun came out and 3 hours later the run way was ready to play and the water was no where to be found.

 On Sunday the fourth the sun shone and on Monday it is showing again, and our grass in the front yard was beautiful and the Moss rose danced for joy

Beauty and The Beast of yards

 

In our Florida Sun and Summer extreme heat, grass here in our small part of Florida, is hard to keep alive. Above is what you get with a sprinkler system and below is the house 4 down from us tht has gone to seed and the weeds are taking over the house.

Yard work in FL must bed done by professionals or dedicated retired owners.

And gallons of water. I am afraid the few people watering there yards are wasting our water supply.

We are somewhere in the middle. Bob has always cuts what ever grows once a week and weed wacked and that is it.

On my morning walks, I pass some with green and some like this one. 

The green grass and this house are only 5 houses from each other.

 we have beauty and the beast on every street. 

Drought is wreaking havoc here and other places.

We are desperate for rain. Our back yard is all sand.

Drought is a horrible thing. It seems it is either too much rain, or not enough.

Our world is in danger from Climate Changes, it is not to late to change the path we are on.

 The house now has garlands of the weed hanging all around the eaves like Christmas Garland.

WE GOT RAIN, 3 times, in 4 days for a total almost 6 inches of rain.

Everything Turned GREEN 

Friday will show you how much rain came, this post was only 2 inches, the first day of The Rain

Above is our front yard which is provided by God and his Rain and cut by Bob. The Sod grass is across the street and was ugly and brown and now is GREEN... here in Florida, the heat/humidity greens everything over night.  For all of the 32 years in this house, our God provided grass was green and beautiful. until 4 years ago when it stopped raining. 

Now we wait to see what hurricane Elsa will do or not do.... we are green while we wait.

A Heliophile in Florida

See the little sunny rain cloud? that is how it rains in Florida. They float around and it may rain on one side of the street and the other is dry.. And most of the time the rain only last a few minutes to an hour, but we do have to watch out for the Zaps! and Booms! because we are the lightning capital of Florida.....

The good news is, I can go out using my cell phone radar and plan my travels by the little moving storms. Recently I saw a break and drove to Wal-Mart, while inside the rain drummed on the roof but when I left the sun was out.

Florida is known as the Sunshine state. I am a heliophile but did not know that until I read this POST on a friend Denise's blog. She posted her husband is a Pluviophile which is a lover of rain. I do not love rain, but I do know we need it.


I had to look up what a sunshine lover is and here we are with yet another post about NOTHING at all.

the reason for all my posts about NOTHING and also the reason I am using Archive Photos, is the Sunshine Is HOT and this summer I have huddled in the house in AC... I still love sunshine.

Below photo I was sitting at traffic signal, having driven through a rain so hard I could not see the cars in front of me, but 3 blocks and I was out of it completely. I drove 3 miles and ran through heavy rain 3 times and in sun 3 times. Only in the sunshine state.

NO I was not to close, here was at least 6 feet between me and the boat, unlike the other cars crammed on each others bumpers

Update on Snow Lovers...Chionophiles are any organisms (animals, plants, fungi, etc.) that can thrive in cold winter conditions (the word is derived from the Greek word chion meaning"snow", and -phile meaning "lover").

The torrent of rain stopped, the sun came out, through the kitchen window, I saw the drops falling from the eaves of the roof into our rain barrel.   PLOP! Snap! PLOP! Snap!  Sunshine = JOY!
