Red Dog Day Two

Day two!  So excited when at 7:35 AM the truck rolled in the driveway. Out jumped The Man Who Worked So Hard the day before. His work ethics are fantastic.

Yelling They are Here! He is out of the car and starting up the ladder, EARLY! No, wait, the truck is leaving. Bob said maybe breakfast. I said Let's hope he is going to get the 3rd man that did not work yesterday.

At 11:30, still ONE man on the roof.  I have Paced and Fretted myself into a tizzy that soon changes to Hissy Fit, I Called Red Dog and complained and she said the project manager will call you.

Simon called and said What's going on?
Today
there is one man on the roof for 3 hours, yesterday there were two, men not three, you tell ME what is going on, you told me what would be done yesterday and today, and it's Not Gonna Happen with one man.
He said I did not know he is not there; I will call him and call you back.
The answer when he called was, he had a personal problem to take care of.
Woo Boy, Hissy Fit Escalation.
I pour out everything they said they would do, and did not do and how far behind they are,
and a lot more. He mentioned the rains and I said THIS IS NOT related to Weather. In the middle of my rant I said, I don't want to talk to you, I am hanging up.

The phone rings as soon as I hang up and he says I am Donny, the Senior Project Manager, Simons Manager. How Can I help you? I start with, I am HOT, really HOT! your Salesman sat in my house for an hour, telling us what a wonderful company you are, and so far, not one thing he said is true
I go through every second of the past 29 hours and the fact there is no way the roof will be ready for the rain that is coming.

The rains come around 3 each day, this is at 2;10

He says all the calmtheoldladydowncannedspeeches that all managers use and hung up.

At noon the second guy shows up. HE SITS IN HIS TRUCK for 30 minutes. Then they are both working in the noon day heat, the man that worked 4 hours alone goes to lunch and there is still one man working. I am watching the Radar
Hard worker drives off,

I am watching out the window and I say to Bob, he just dragged all the nails from yesterday all the way around the house leaving a trail of nails to rival Hansel and Gretels breadcrumbs. I rant For Petes Sake, use the magnet first, then move it. It's full of nails! What does he think will happen. I just picked up all the ones that were there. yada yada

Bob says, with your knowledge you should be the project manager!

The problem is: I know what they should be doing, and they don't.  Jackie says I am being a helicopter mom roofer!

At one PM there are finally Two Men On The Roof and I can rest and quit running from window to window. The Big Red Dog Truck pulls in the driveway, and it is The Senior Project Manager.

He goes to the corner where they are working, I can hear them but it's all in Spanish, but I know what he is saying. He was headed for his truck to leave, and I open the door and walk to him.

I start with I am sorry I was ugly on the phone; I want to ask you why you just put 11 sheets of plywood on the roof and all those boards.  He said, perfect timing, walk with me, and we went into the neighbor's yard, and he pointed to the roof, and said that whole section of the roof was rotted, the boards are to replace the rafters, and to replace the plywood. I could see the rot; I could see the rotted plywood and he said the back side of the roof only needed 2 sheets; I had paid for 3 sheets. He said this is extra work and one of the reasons for the slow down. I look at the clouds and say, 1/4 of the roof is off and the rain is coming. He said do you know when? I said looks like maybe just before 3. He says they know what to do.

I am sad because this is going to cost a LOT MORE MONEY, but happy that I saw it with my own eyes and that the tree men on the roof 3 weeks ago did not fall through the roof. The Tree Guy is the one who told me to get the roof inspected.  They could not see the damage until the roof was off.

The rotted wood is every place there was a tree shading it. The Wind Started to Blow, the sky got darker, the men on the roof were running around, I could hear every movement, they had the BAM BAM BAM thingy going like crazy, madly putting down sheet rock, I could hear the thunder and them racing he storm.  I saw the man go down the ladder and drag the blue tarp and carry it up the ladder and watched as we were soon encased in a big blue Tent.

They were dropping heavy packs of shingles all over it to keep it on and Bob said What Are they doing. I said look out the window. The Tent is up, and they are in their truck. the wind howled and bolts came down for about an hour. They sat in the truck, I said why don't they leave?

At 4 pm they scurried up the ladder, removed the tarp and finished enough of the roof that it was safe overnight. they left at 5 and as I sit here typing this at 5:15 am, we wait to see how many shows up today.  The radar shows right now that the storms might be earlier today. We have at least today and tomorrow and maybe longer. Ov Vey! the good news is, we NEEDED this roof, and the work they are doing is excellent. The one that works so hard is a master roofer, his work is amazing.

Hello,
I think all home improvements can be stressful. We can only hope the workers are doing a good job and doing it as fast as they can. Take care, enjoy your day!

It's major house surgery; you are right to be worried but also right to have to accept that the blokes employed might actually know what they are doing! Even if they are doing it differently to how you might... YAM xx

Holy s***! Just reading this, my heart began racing like crazy. I'm so glad that supervisor took time to explain and show you all the how and whys. I don't know much about this sort of thing but was catastrophizing the ceiling falling in on top of y'all some night while you slept.
Yes, it must feel like a money pit (been there!), but better than risking someone's life. I hate Summer.

WOW good for you know being taken advantage of SANDRA.
You are paying them to work for you and you have 100% so say to question everything.
I hope today is better at least they know you are paying attention.

Glad the tree guy let you know that you had roof damage. Let’s hope today goes well. Sitting in their truck to sleep suggests they leave motor running for AC. Not. a wise practice as fuel is wasted and air polluted but it make manager see truck is at location so he assumes they are on the job. But they are happy workers I suppose. Well rested on the job .

This is life, isn't it? We have no rain - we want rain - then there is too much rain. Salesmen lie to us. No one's time is like our timing. We fret. Worry. Then things seem to work out in the end.

I know you are going through stress - we had ours done once too.

That's quite a saga you have going on there. If the rains didn't come down in buckets every day it probably wouldn't seem so bad.
I do think the guys know what they are doing and you will be happy with the end product...I know...not with the added expense though
BUT
It would have been worse if the rotten roof hadn't been fixed.
Hang in there GirlFriend..a few more days and all will be done.
Hugs

Your experience sounds very stressful and I hope that the roofing gets done as soon as possible. Two lots of work on your home plus the extra expense, the comings and goings of the roofers has added to the stress, but good that tree surgeon pointed out the need for the roof fix. Take care both of you. Hugs.

I can understand how a tree can rot the roofing material. I just hope, like you, this'll be done soon.

Wow, this is turning into a very frustrating project. I remember when they did my roof. They did it while I was at work and when I got home at 3:00 they were nearly done. There were several guys working and they were quick, and efficient and had everything cleaned up perfectly. I probably would have flipped out if I was going through what you are.

Fingers crossed the ordeal will be over soon!

Oh my! Your rotten roof and rafters make me antsy about our roof which is shaded just about all the time. Now I have got to investigoogle (note how I purloined your word? No guilt, either!) about how many years after new construction a roof needs checking. Best wishes on your roof adventures.

Good GRIEF, high drama!! I hope you don't have a nervous breakdown before all this is over. Seems the weathr is the biggest problem. I have never heard of a place that rains every single day.

That was so stressful for you!! I'm so sorry but thankfully they are doing a great job.

I read this twice, Sandra, and all I could think about was that it's nice NOT to have to be concerned with house projects now that we live in an apt. Of course, we are on the top floor, so it there was a roof issue we would be the first to know. Good for you ln keeping a sharp lookout on what was going on. It is your house and you are paying for the work and should be aware of what's happening. I know the added cost is never a happy thing, but better to have found out sooner than later.

Wow!!! This is so exciting!!! God had a plan! I know you are frantic at times but it IS all coming together!
