Squirrel Story

Behold the crotch to the avocado tree now known as the Squirrel Feeder. It has been used many times.
We have very few avocado's and our squirrels are looking scrawny. I chatted with my buddy, and asked if he liked Oats and he said we love oatmeal, but don't cook it.
I put a lid full of oats in the buffet and it was gone by lunch time, I put stale Shredded wheat squares, cheerios, corn flakes.
They love all of that and research finds it is good for them.

The two sweeties are gaining a little weight. They knocked down this avocado this week, and since they had eaten chunks of it before it fell, I sat it in the buffet.
They have so far this week eaten between the two of them, three whole very large avocados.
One of the squirrels will sit and let me come about 5 feet away and pays no mind at all to Beau.
JUST LIKE BEAU when the camera comes up, they zip up the tree.
I had no idea squrrels have super hearing skills. From inside my bedroom window, I pulled the blinds up to watch him eat and his head snapped to the window and he looked me in the eye.
He went back to eating. I pushed the ZOOM button and he heard it and zipped up the tree.
I was at least 12 feet from him and inside with windows closed.
Yes! I talk to my squirrels just like I talk to my lizards and frogs

this is a squirrel from 3 years ago, I popped him in the photo with PicMonkey to show you how fat he is and how thin the others are. there is very little fruit on the trees for food this year. so far we have had them knock down 5 avocados, and there are usually  so many we have to give them away. the tree is bare

I didn't know how much you like squirrels, seems most people do not. I like them too! A lot of people around here put out bird feeders, and that is how ours get their food. Gosh, it looks like they have super duper hearing! Each tree around here has namy squirrel nests. Now if only when they run across the street, they wouldn't zig zag!

Hello Sandra,:=) Great captures of your grey squirrels. It's good that your squirrels are fattening up for the cold winter months, and I never knew that they liked cereals. Avocados are fattening fruit, and they certainly can eat a lot, they must have been very hungry.

Sandra, you are not alone in chatting to wild animals. I do it all the time, even to the smallest of creatures, and even to flowers! Do they listen, I'm not sure, but it hasn't been disproved. I too discovered that Squirrels have great hearing and just like Mel used to do, the minute they hear the click of my camera, they look right at me. Yours seem quite confiding in that they let you get quite near, but the red ones I see most days run away if I open the door to my balcony.

I used to get squirrels when I had bird feeders out. Now I just occasionally see one running across the power lines.
I bet they like your house since they get a tasty meal there.

We occasionally see a squirrel in our garden, but mostly they're in the woods or the local park. That's a good place to put the avocados so you can watch and take photos.

I was surprised once when I saw a squirrel eat a mushroom!! They're so cute. Yes, I talk to the animals too.

Hello,

The squirrels here have plenty of natural foods to eat, nuts and berries and lots of acorns. I stopped feeding the birds because the squirrels were eating all the bird food. I talk to the animals too. Take care, enjoy your day!

How precious they are! I never thought about their keen sense of hearing, but that makes sense.
Tom usually buys dry corn cobs at Tractor Supply, but it's good to know these thigns you've mentioned are good for them, too. Thanks for doing the research on our behalf!

I love winter, but then I always worry about the wildlife.

I HATE SQUIRRELS - I have spent 2 years and thousands of dollars getting them out of my attic!

I love squirrels! One childhood nickname was "Squirrel" because of my fat cheeks! I love their antics. Thank you for feeding your skinny Gen-X squirrels! I know they are Gen-X because they are having the squirrel version of "avocado toast."

The drought sure does a number on fruit and the great critters that like it.
You are really a Dr. Dolittle to the animals in your yard.
Avocados are such healthy fat...their coats must be very healthy looking.
Almost time for my eldercare duty..then after that and dinner its off to Celebrate Recovery to help with dessert time after their meeting.
So we are back at it after almost 2 years.

I don't have any regular squirrels, tree squirrels, here, only ground squirrels and they go underground in the fall and hibernate til spring. Except this year, they are apparently confused by the warm weather, because they keep poppig up from their dens to catch some sunshine. Climate change is indeed affecting us all.

We are not terribly fond of squirrels, but we suppose every creature needs to have food. You are very kind to treat them so well.

I quite like the look of squirrels - and would love to chat with one - but there are NONE in New Zealand...

Good for you for finding what foods are healthy for them. I'm glad they got a few avocados. 😊

I love squirrels! - Yours are so cute, I'm so happy you are giving them food to eat along with the avocados they managed to get. Which I never knew they would eat. I feed the ones here unsalted peanuts and dried corn.

They are so cute. We don't get any squirrels up on our hill for some reason but I have seen them at the bottom of the hill. We do get our bunnies and I've been giving them carrots or a long time now. I recently changed to throwing them down the hill behind us because my favorite bunny is not longer coming around. I imagine something happened to him. He would wait for me around 4:30 and wouldn't run away like the other bunnies do.
