Egads Everyone needs an Ego
Hope This post relieves anyone suffering loss of sleep over my external drive crash yesterday. I was able to get all 85 gigs from the old drive (did it myself) on to this tiny little wonder drive. Photos are Safe! Every one take a deep breath now!
Above is Ego, slim and trim, easy to use (just plug in, drag and drop). Ego now has my 85 gigs of photos on it and room for the next 10 years. (maybe not 10, I AM the MadSnapper)
Storage for photos storage can be CD's, DVD, Online and external drives. CD's take up lots of space (see below photo). My Old drive was desktop huge and Ego is about the size of a wallet, 350 gig for 50.00 or 80.00 for 500 gigs. Worth the investment for sure. (there are other brands, I went with the cheapest since I am cheaop)
(CD isnot the best way to store if you take a lot of photos, slow and space hog)
What I learned while transferring 85 gigs
1. I take to many photos (in future keep ONLYthe best)
2. back up your back up, have at least 2 copies of your photos
3. I had 2071 dog photos, 7000 park and day trip, 3000 flowers (most from my back yard) 2258 Birds a total of over 20,000 photos and that does not count the drawer of CD's.
Can any one say MADSNAPPER?

It really IS SOO VERY HARD to throw that picture away.. even if it is a bit fuzzy and all the sharpening in the world won't fix it. Pack rats... basically we are all pack rats.
Ok, point well taken. I need to get on the ball and backup my photos too. I do have CDs but I would hate to loose all my Africa pictures, in fact I woud hate to loose any of my pictures, of which I have too many too. Flowers, trips and odd ball things.
Happy to hear you are back in business again.
I'm glad you were able to recover all of your photos. It's amazing how much the size (and cost) of external drives has shrunk over the years.
What's a "gig"? What's an "ego"?
Best,
Bonnie
Hi Sandra, Our extra external drives get smaller and smaller ---yet are bigger than the old ones.. They make so many technical and positive changes from one year to the next.
I just checked my picture folder on my computer (which I back up onto two other external drives). The folder contains 98.26 gb--and there are 39,992 items in that folder.. That's a heck of a lot of photos, isn't it???? George's is even larger than mine --since he works with raw pictures and I do not. He cannot keep his pictures on his main computer --so they have their own external drive....
Glad you could retrieve your pictures though... Did you buy TWO Ego's so that you have a back-up for your back-up?????
Hugs,
Betsy
No, but I can say MadGenius! If it had crashed, I don't know how on earth you managed to retrieve them! But how cool!!!! Your ego should be roaring, and justifiably so!! I got a hard drive like this, but after my tech guy started it for me, he scheduled regular backups but we can't do it. When we plug it in, it doesn't do it automatically like he says, and I don't know what needs backup now and whats's already there. So I will have him come back, or buy a backup that's easier to work. As brilliant as you are with this, I am that stupid. One other way we are not alike. Did I see you said thousands of BIRD pictures?? WHY don't yu ever post any?? We are birdwatchers and bird lovers, and you hardly ever post any. I remember when we first met, you had those very cool flamingo posts.
Well done! You are amazing....Beth would NOT know what to do....
Now that's one cool madsnapper. Love the choice of your new device because of its name. hehehe And I'm impressed at your talent with saving to the new device.
oh no I couldn't throw any of them away....lol Actually I do delete quite a few but there are so many more that I should delete and for some odd reason I can't bring myself to do.
I'm a cheapo too so I would have also got the cheaper one
Yes, I can say MadSnapper and there are many of us out here in blog land who have lots and lots of photos. I did back up to CDs and still have all those, but as you said they DO take up so much room. The pst year or so I have been using a hard drive backup exclusively and wonder if I should back up to a few CDs. But then again don't feel like doing all that extra work. COngrats on your successful retrieval and backup.
I can M A D S N A P P E R !
Thanks for the lesson.
love yah, sandie
Oh the dilemma. To take pictures or not to.I would say keep on shooting and having fun,let the family deal with all those pictures sometime in the future.
Ruth
these are great tips. thanks
I've got a 1 terabyte drive where I keep my photos and a 2 terabyte drive to keep the backups. Over 500 gigabytes of just photos on each. You know that's a lot of pixels. I'm so glad you were able to save yours.
Very cool, it looks identical (I got red too) to mine except for the name. Mine is a Skin. We gotta find you another place to shop however. Mine is a 500GB and I paid $45 at Amazon, shipping was free and I had it in two days.
I am forever struggling with my filing of things both inside and outside the computer ;) I still find it hard to delete photos, and I always make copies before editing, so that means A LOT of photos... I've started sort of a new system för myself from this year though and getting better at tagging the best and most unique photos so that I'll be able to find them more easily.
Glad you were able to save all your pictures. I know you were upset over thinking you lost them. AND you did it yourself. Did not have to pay an arm and a leg to save them! Good job! (As Henry would say...)
I'm glad. Boy, it seems that if you don't toss the photos you don't want right away..it can be overwhelming later!! Ya, that's next on my to do list:)
I say "Addicted to the click!!" hahaha
So glad you were able to save your images!
