Once Upon an Air Conditioner....

The Air Conditioner that lived at MadSnapper's house
DIED DEAD..
As in NO AIR at ALL...
The repair man cometh... 1 burned wire and a transformer. woo hoo cold air
Dead again after 7 hours
The repair man cometh AGAIN the next day... a blown fuse...woo hoo cold air
Dead again in 1 hour
The repair man cometh a 3rd time in 3 days

Meet the Culprit.... a Capacitor and more melted wires.. We are now back in business and COLD.
TODAY is day FOUR still cooling,...
On day two of no calls to the repair man, I say to Bob as we drink our coffee in bed...

"What's a capacitor do?????    I get up and grab Google Girl AKA Samsung Tablet, and Ask what is a capacitor.. She reads me a whole paragraph and I click on the link and WOW!

We read this article at Explain that stuff.com  and read and read and read. We had a blast and now we both know that every thing electrical has a capacitor that stores high energy to kick start all things electric. Your camera has one, your radio, your TV... get the picture?

EVEN lightnng is caused by a GIANT capacitor in the sky..... NO KIDDING... since the site says it is copyright, click on above link if you want to know how lightning works and how clouds and ice and more clouds and ice trap energy between them and BOOM....

We now know that the little guy above MUST kick the big BOOM to get the compressor to turn on or it will burn the wires and kill the AC DEAD...... I do hope I did not get to technical for you

You are now an official Mad Repair Woman. You do the telling, they do the fixing. Any time I walk near appliances, I will now get capacitor fear! Is it running, does it sound different, is it starting and stopping less often...

Ah yes, the inimitable capacitor. I wish I had a dollar for everyone of those paid for as a bookkeeper in the HVAC industry. Glad your finally back to cool.

Hello, I am glad your AC is now working even though it took a few tries to get it working. Google is just amazing, everything is right at your finger tips. Thanks for sharing the link. I will check it out. Happy Friday, enjoy your weekend!

Man, I would hate to have to pay for all those service calls. Where I live that would have cost an arm and a leg plus your first born!
Glad you are back in the cool again.

I had no idea. Actually, I still have very little idea... I had to look up what it's called in Swedish, and then I though "ah", and then I looked it up in Swedish and it turned out I still had no idea! (I think I probably always thought it was something completely different...)

I can't fathom being without A/C in August ... unless you're at the South Pole!

Since anything technical causes my eyes to grow glassy and roll back in their sockets, I'm going to take your word for it. Were my school teachers half as entertaining as you, perhaps I'd have paid more attention!

The word capacitor makes me think of the movie "Back to the future" for some reason. Thanks for the little lesson. I feel much smarter now :) I'm glad that you're finally chillin'

Hope it is still working. Very interesting! I saw some great lighting bolts from our hotel window. Not as many but similar to the ones I see in Florida!
