F Stop controls the size of the aperture (hole that lets light in the camera) the larger the F Stop (F 32)the smaller the hole, the smaller the F Stop (F/3)
Use low for focus on single subject and higher for more detail as in mountains.
Shutter Speed is how quick the shutter SNAPS! fast snaps lets in less light, slow snap lets in more. Bright Sun like this requires Fast Shutter Speed or you will get WHITE red flowers, Trust me on this, I KNOW
I am writing this in Sandra Speak because all these things make me CRAZY, but you can see it does make for prettier pics. (do NOT say RAW please) And if you set any of these three incorrectly for the light you will either have a black photo or a white one, I have these as proof but will not post since I deleted them.
Thank goodness we have digital.......
I am wishing for the time to come when I will see a photo I want to take and my Senior Brain will think quickly put the camera on whatever is needed. for now? I have to stop and think and try and retry and by the time I figure it out the MOMENT may be Gone...

Each shot is beautiful, just keep on shooting. I will forever associate ISO (or ASA) with film speed, am I showing my age here.

The manual ones certainly look better. Thanks for the info because our camera club are discussing DOF and Photographing flowers on Monday.
I can't do all this stuff. I'm lucky I know where the on/off switch is.
The most important thing you wrote about but didn't mention is the ISO setting of 100. I try to set most shots at ISO of 200 though I can get away with ISO of 400. But the ISO setting is what determines the amount of "noise" the camera captures when taking/making the digital image. Set your digital Rebel at an ISO 100 and set it on "A" on the dial. Take a picture in the shadows somwhere and note the amount of detail you can see in the shadows. Now set the dial under "A" to 400 and first notice the shutter speed is faster and the time changes and the noise almost disappears.
There is a lot to the settings. A good way to learn it to set it on the green dial and see what the camera automatically sets up for. And all the programs below the green auto setting are programmed in the camera so those settings are interesting and almost fail proof.

Beautiful flowers. You would think that because I have lived with two very GOOD photographers,I would know all about those crazy settings,but NOI. I need to learn,but it just doesn't get through this thick skull of mine.Maybe if you keep on explaining it,I will get it,too. LOL
well, i give you credit for learning and studying. my camera sits on auto 99% of the time...

I have a hard time remembering all the various settings, that's for sure! Most of the time, my camera is setting on Auto. I keep thinking...one of these days I'll read the manual and remember what I read! Ha!
I read about RAW and have heard that it's much better to shoot that way but I have yet to figure it out. I have a hard enough time trying to get manual right :) You on the other hand seem to be doing quite nicely with it

You did a wonderful job of explaining and showing what the F-Stop does in Manual mode. But what do you have against RAW?
I admire you for working so hard with all of the manual settings... I just am not interested in doing much of that. My 'auto' works quite well for me I think... (Guess I'm not a true photographer, huh?)
