Jake 8/20/2017, 12 years 8 months old |
Thursday August 10th, I came home from my meeting and Jake did not greet me at the door. I said to Bob, where is Jake, he said go look in the shower. I walked to the master bath and he was panting and shaking like a leaf, and cowering in the shower corner behind the curtain. I said What Happened?
Bob said, I offered him a piece of soft pretzel and he started shaking and panting and ran down the hall and has been there ever since. For two days each time we went in the kitchen, or ate at the counter he went to hide in the shower. Day 3, he would go get in his chair in the bedroom, the shaking panting stopped but he would not get near the kitchen or food from our hands. We put his dog food in the bowl and whatever we put there, he would eat if we were not in the kitchen.
He has always sat on his red rug and watched us cook and sat under our feet while we ate, for over 12 years.
We waited and on Augs 15th he would get on the couch and watch us eat at the counter. All this time he refused to take anything from our fingers.
On the 19th, 20 and 21st he suddenly flipped back to his normal self, and sat on his red rug and watched us cook, takes anything we hand him, sits under our feet and has made no trips to hide.
We have NO IDEA what this was, but I am wondering if he had canine dementia episode and saw something in his head.
This dog is our life, he is our child.

Well, cats are scared to death of cucumbers. This is so wild!! Maybe he did think he saw something other than the pretzel piece. But it still would have been so small! I have never heard of such a curious conundrum. Perhaps you are right, can dogs get dementia? Go to Google Girl!!
Google has a lot! I found this: Confusion, disorientation, dogzheimers. Call it what you will, but canine dementia (known clinically as canine cognitive dysfunction) can be a serious problem. Just like humans, dogs can suffer from many of the same symptoms:
Leave it to Ginny to puzzle this out! That has to be what it is - was.....
Your Jake is so loved! I had a dog named Duchess once. She was the best dog and both sets of my children loved her just as much as I did. She lived to be a little over 20 years old! Her last few years were much like elderly people....she couldn't see or hear well and was weak and slow. But she was uch an elegant little dog. A photo of her is still on my fridge and I still miss her. Hopefully Jake still has more time with you and Bob.
I can't believe I'm awake this early in the morning! It's 5:00 am!
What a curious event... glad he came back to his old self. Could be any number of things that made him uncomfortable there. Could be a presence of someone else there, like a critter, bug or something like that... maybe he saw something. Could be confusion... But I'm glad he doesn't shake and pant anymore.

Good morning, that is strange behavior. The shaking and panting sounds like a nervous condition. Something happen in the kitchen? I am just glad whatever it was that it has passed now and Jake is back to normal.
Wishing you all a good day!
Ohhhh Jake bless you sweet heart...thank goodness whatever happened passed and you are back to your happy self enjoying the sun and your special ball
Sending hugs madi your bfff and Mom
PS we hope your mom's sinus infection is better.
Aw poor Jake. That is strange behavior. Something had him spooked whether it was real or imagined. Glad he got passed it and is acting normal again.
I read this post with trepidation about the outcome. (no panting though) And breathed a sigh of relief at the end. Hopefully it was just a passing occurrence of some kind.
Lucy turned ten in July and for sometime now she will be sleeping away and suddenly leap off the couch, run to the other room and look back to see why we haven't exited with her. A recurring dream? We have no idea.
I have never heard about this before, and glad that he is back to himself again.
Oh wow that is strange. Something has frighten him perhaps. Glad he is back to his own self.
Hello Sandra!:) I'm so glad Jake got over whatever it was that caused him so much anxiety. It's so worrying for us "Moms" when we don't know how to help them when they are stressed out.
Now that is totally fascinating Sandra. Poor baby, I would love to speak dog so that I can ask him what was up.
I have heard of it too Sandra - let's hope it is not this and something else. I know how much you love him.
My heart was in my throat reading this.
That is something so out of character for him after so many years together.
I hope this was some one of a kind issue and you won't see this again.
Scary, especially hiding in the shower like that.
I wish we could peer into their brains sometimes.
That's different. I'm glad he is back to himself again!
This was just so, so strange. I would love to know what was happening with him, too. I am glad he is better, and I hope he never has another episode like that.
How upsetting ... for all 3 of you! At first I wondered if Jake had had a bad dream, but Ginny's comment makes sense.
What I'd give if our fur babies were able to speak to us in a language we'd understand!
Sounds like a flash back. Wasn't he a rescue dog?
Glad he has recovered.
That would have been a worrying time for you all. Sounds very strange. Hope it doesn't happen again
Maybe he was fighting a virus?
Glad he recovered!
How is he doing now?
Poor Jake - That has to have been scary not only for you but also for him. It's so hard when we know something is wrong with our furry friends and yet they cannot tell us what is wrong. I hope he continues to give you many more happy days to come.
That must have been so upsetting for you and Bob to see Jake in such a state and scary for him too. Glad to hear that he's back to normal. It sounds as if you're not so well yourself. Contending with the painful sinus problem and the noise from the roadworks doesn't help. Take care you three.
