Three Strikes and they're OUT

We have city water, for which we pay 70.00 per month. That also includes garbage pickup at the curb and sewerage. We have had it for 27 years and not many problems at all over those years.

For 3 weeks we have listened to  the sounds of  big machines ROARR..BEEP BEEP BEEP and diggers SCRAPE SCRAPE and RAT TAT TAT of  jackhammers. The sound of traffic in front of our house as it waited for the guys with slow/go signs let them past the MESS...pipes in road, pipes on yards, cars can't get in their driveways, not ours but others.

A few days ago, I said Listen! Bob says to what?   I said NOTHING! the noise is gone! I checked and sure enough they were gone. A few minutes later, I turned on the faucet in the kitchen at dinner time and NO WATER.. NONE! it was off for several hours.  When it came on, it was full of rusty dirt. We had to let it run and run to get it clean.

2 days later MORE NOISE! Different Noise! Big steam rollers and big trucks, they were pouring blacktop on the street ALL DAY! Finally they were gone and silence reigned.

Next day Bob comes back from walking Jake and said .. there is a problem, water is bubbling up like crazy out of the corner where the new blacktop starts. Later that day, we hear BIG MACHINES, Digging, for hours.... THE WATER GOES OFF... by end of day the water is back, the machines are gone.

Today, Tuesday, I go to Walmart for more Sinus Crud Supplies because Bob and I both have had what ever is going around and been sick. When I came home, I said GUESS WHAT? Its Burbling AGAIN!

Sure enough, it's 3 pm, I sit here typing and for 2 hours NO WATER!!!   OK City Of Bradenton, This is your Last Strike. Get This Right Or Else.... I know they are trembling in their boots.

As we watch the horror of Hurricane Harvey ONE GOOD THING occurred to me! I now know how blessed we are to have toilets that flush (we use pool water) and faucets that run (sometime today)...And gallon jugs of water to make coffee and to pour into dog bowls.....As I close, the dishes from today are piled in the sink unwashed, they were pre rinsed in the back yard with pool water.
PERSPECTIVE!     God Bless all who are harmed by Harvey and all who are helping them.

Good grief, aren't these workers supposed to be experts in their fields? A new book comes to mind "The Horror Of the Blacktop".

What is happening in Texas is just heartbreaking...:( SandraGood gravy, both of you got sick!?!?! And water is tough to go without. My sister had a problem when she lived in Pensacola...tree roots had extended into their pipes and what a disaster that was!!!...:)JP

Such a good point...perspective is everything. It sounds like all the workers who know how to fix this problem are on vacation and the others a fumbling along til they get back!

Hello, they needed three times to fix the pipes, that is awful. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the hurricane victims and Texas. It will be a long time before they can feel normal. I hope you and Bob feel better soon!

I hope you have a good day and the meds help you!

That must be annoying having interruptions to your water but say oust our problems diminish in size compared to those under Harvey.

"But as you say our problems..." Silly predictive text.

What an ordeal! As you say though, perspective is everything.

This is an excellent post, Sandra. God help us all to count our blessings!

MS I should really let Bryan answer this blog...He has a very strong love/hate relationship with the City of Raleigh services. Our water bills are so very very high for just 2 people. Of course it includes sewer, garbage etc but the actual water use is amazing. Raleigh has tiered water services..of course each tier is higher than the one below. We are sitting on the fence of tier 2 and 3. The city of Raleigh rounds up not down. I hope and pray yours is fixed and not dirty.
You are so right we are blessed
Hugs Madi and Cecilia

I am sorry you and Bob have had to deal with all this Sandra, especially as you've both been under the weather. I feel for the people of Texas having to deal with this Hurricane, it puts it all in perspective as you say but I sure hope things will go back to normal for you. I'm sad to say it will be a long time before the people of Texas can say the same and my heart is with them.

Hello Sandra!:) Your troubles sound like the ones we have on the road from the farm. New tarmac was laid last week and the surface was nice and smooth, it only stayed like that for five days before it was dug up again and pipes put down, more tarmac on top, pipes burst, you get the idea. It mystifies us why the pipes were not laid down first! Sorry for the hassle you have had, and I hope you feel better soon.
My thoughts and prayers are with the hurricane victims of S. Texas, and all the people trying to help them. Counting my blessings!

Sorry about your water and blacktop problems. I'm glad they were sorted. I too, pray for all affected by Hurricane Harvey. Have a great day, Sandra. PS will Bob help you with the backlog of dishes?

You are so right Sandra, its all about perspective. Obviously the workmen are not doing the job right but what's that compared to all of those poor people. I can't believe what I am watching on the news.

Every time there is a problem like that with water, or electricity, or internet... it makes one realize how much one relies on it normally working smoothly... Seen videos here too of the flooding; looks awful, must be terrible to have one's home flooded - and all the work ahead to restore things after the storm... :(

Problems like no water can be frustrating, but I guess in the overall scheme of things it's really not that bad. Positive side is that you don't have to wash dishes.

Yes, perspective. And patience as I struggle with no running water since the last 12 hours now.

Harvey is a good reminder to all of us, but then if you look at the rest of the world any time of day, we are blessed beyond measure. I don't think any of us are near thankful enough that we live here.

I hope they get the water situation straightened out for good. It is frustrating not having it when we are so used to it.

Sounds like a real mess and a noisy one at that. However when you compare it to those going through hurricane Harvey its a small inconvenience. Hope they have it all fixed soon

Nothing like the taps running dry all of a sudden.

After seeing the terrible price gouging for a case of bottled water on the news, I am VERY thankful to have clean water. Harvey's remnants is headed our way Friday.

It is a about perspective, but still, not fun at all!!

Perspective, yes. Clean water on demand is something I take for granted ... until it's not.
I've had to slow, crawl and occasionally stop (and stew) behind road crews.

Perhaps I should be grateful I'm not one of them, out in the elements. ...Especially that fellow who has to turn his 'slow' sign around to 'stop.' Talk about feeling like the Most Hated person on the planet! :)

Well that is a big bummer for sure and a pain in the butt too but you are right in light of what Texas is going through it's a blessing.

I agree that having no water is a downer, Sandra, and we too will have the same situation in a week or so here. Work is being done on boilers in the mill apts. But, as you said, when we think of those affected by Hurricane Harvey we definitely do not have it bad.

Debby@Just Breathe said...

Yes, tragic things like Harvey always make us count our blessing.

Your willingness to let og of feeling bad about water outages brings the ending of this post to my agreement with you. At the moment we seem ever so fortunate. And yes thanks to all who care and share openly to be of assistance.
