The Dilemma

The Dilemma of Desktop VS. Laptop!
As of today, I have bought nothing.
I can't make up my mind which I want.
For Now this horrid set up is what I am doing.
Laptop with 'wired' keyboard, 'wired' mouse
connected to 10 year old Samsung 22 inch monitor, that I have loved  for 10 years.

I can SEE it! the monitor I mean..

The Laptop is 4 and 6 months, the battery is not holding well, and who knew I could buy one that did not have a battery I could replace.
It can be replaced, just not by ME.

This is working OK and I can release it from THREE wires and take it to my rocking chair.
It really offends my OCD self looking at this although it works well.

I keep thinking I am on my desktop and trying to find all the STUFF that was stored on it.
there is nothing stored on the lap top. I have it saved on external hard drives.
I am in The Process. You will be the first to know when/if/what I buy.

the ugly wired mess on the ugly 1997 vintage pasteboard looks better in low lamp light.

Feel free to tell me what you use, give opinions, say what you think.
waiting to hear from you .........

I also ponder what I am pondering while our world is falling apart in chaos from pandemic and politics.
If I were running for Mrs. America, would I stand up and say I wish for a desktop AND a laptop, not world peace???

If you get a touchscreen, make sure you can do a lot of repetitive shoulder and arm movements without causing pain later. Having never used one, you don't know. I think a mouse is easier on the body. When we went shopping for computers last year, we were shocked! So many of them are lightweight laptops that convert to tablets. None of them were a fit for me or my hands. I ended up returning them, and keeping my old one with a new super fast hard drive installed. It was cheaper too. Tell us more about what you want.

Good luck! I mostly use an iPad and my Mac Mini with a monitor.

I prefer the laptop but the tablet is also good ... especially in bed! LOL
Have a blessed weekend!

Between the desktop (HP) the laptop (Acer) and the tablet (Samsung) My most favorite to use in the desktop. Call me old school but I just prefer it. I had heard that the all in one computers were not necessarily a good buy because if one part goes the whole thing goes where as if you have a separate monitor, keyboard and tower you only need to replace the part that went bad.

Hello,

I love my desktop with the wide screen monitor. I can not hold a tablet, my hand hurt too much. My keyboard and mouse are both hooked up with wires. I guess I am used to the wires.
I hope you find a computer you like. Take care, enjoy your weekend!

World peace will never come, so, yes...ask for the New laptop.

I have never owned a laptop. Bryan and I share our computer...he would never be able to used a laptop. My desktop is about 4 years old, measures 22" horizontally, 26" corner to corner. At the time of purchase I also bought a wireless mouse and keyboard.

I think you're being wise to wait -- unless your OCD overcomes your peace of mind. (I don't know about you, but what peace of mind I had is circling the drain.)
Would you believe, I've never used a laptop? Oh, once I had to do something on my boss' boss' report (got that?) and nearly lost the whole thing on account of the blasted touch pad. Call me old fashioned, but I can't envision ever using anything but this desktop.

I'm anxious to hear what you choose!

Hmmmm....well, I. would keep that monitor as long as you love it, it works and you. can see it clearly as it's a 22". Many laptops made today ,as you probably already know, cannot have their components replaced, which how the manufacturers get us to buy new stuff. For instance. my old MAC I told you about...we did brain surgery on it, replaced the drive to 1T and upgraded the processors to 4, because it was made when you could replace parts. Like you I don't store on the device itself...all on externals, making it easier to take the data with me wherever I am. I think you should get another laptop, add a wireless keyboard, and check to see if your 22" monitor can be "wireless"...:)jp

The set up you are using looks perfectly fine to me. I only use a desktop, I've never liked laptops at all. I don't have an all in one now but they are my favorite of all. My decision always comes down to what the best buy is when I need a new one.

Good luck with your decision. I love my laptop which is old and I mainly use it for photos and some mailing labels. Since everything I do is in Chrome I absolutely love my Chromebook.

The AIOs look very elegant, no doubt about it and for what you do, are probably okay; but what is said about maintenance is true. A standalone tower PC might be better - and you can then keep your beloved monitor! (Most AIOs only give another inch advantage.) It would also be cheaper. Generally speaking, you are better going straight to the manufacturer's sites to compare pricing and service.

As you know, I work from Voovoo the Vaio, who is an industrial 17" laptop that I have had for nine years now... she is showing signs of little bits and pieces starting not to work. I did have a bluescreen crash the other night which was a tad unpleasant. I am overdue for a full backup - haven't done one since return to Hutch! For everyday working, I hang a standard keyboard from her and I use a radio mouse (USB run = no wires... her Bluetooth link having ceased working). I am pondering a new purchase, but might go the route of tower PC and use HDMI connection to use the television as my monitor (since I don't really use it as a telly anyway and tend to watch everything online!) Most of these now come with wireless k/b and mouse so can be worked from anywhere in the room... and darling Voovoo can then be my 'bedmate' and travelling companion only!!! YAM xx

You already know I have a similar set-up, I've just managed to hide/ organize my cords better. And I have my laptop on the table in front of the extra monitor and use a "roller-mouse" wrist-rest with the keyboard. And when I bought my present laptop I also knew I'd use it mostly as a desktop so made sure to get one with a lot of storage. (I also have a tablet and a smartphone, which I use for reading and emails and messages and Facebook and Duolingo etc. But with blogging and photo editing/storage etc I want a proper keyboard and bigger screen.

Louis Dean has both desk top and lap top but then his desk top dieda true and lasting death! His Geek Squad is no longer staffed with the guys who were so good. So he has his laptop wired to the desktop monitor. Works for him and he's not at all concerned with OCD! He can use his laptop just fine as is at the ranch. It's so stressful having to make decisions like this!

I found the basket on Wayfair. They have all kinds of big animal baskets.

I am a die hard Apple user. I have had a Mackbook for quite a few years and it is all I need. Oh I do also have an iPad and of course the iPhone. Like I say, for me it is Apple all the way.

Sandra, it’s so hard to decide with so many options. Personally, I have a desktop, laptop, and tablet and like Ruth commented, mine are also all Apple products, which admittedly can be more costly upfront. That said, they have had minor issues and a BIG plus is Apple Support which I have used. It’s based in the U.S. which means you will not have language or other communication issues. Happy shopping and hope you find something you will like.

After reading all this, I would be more confused than ever if I were in your shoes. But I don't think i cold ever go back to a desktop...I have been using 17 inch laptops for years now...just got the smaller one for traveling. Since I have to do all the packing when we go, I was trying to lighten the load. But I sit in a recliner with my feet up to use laptop...and I have a mess of cords...that does not bother me. They are something I am using...

Hello Sandra,
I'm not much help, as I only use a desktop, loads of wires too, but hey, it's fine by me.

I like my laptop and it took me a long time to change over from a desktop. Now I don’t want to go back.

We have both and rarely go on the desktop any more. I have a MAC now and absolutely love it! But it's hard to know which is best for what you want to do. Hugs!

Let your software be your guide. What ever you choose between a laptop or desk top is not as important as "What you want to be able to do" on your computer. Size of hard drive for us photography nerds is vital.. go LARGE.
After that everything will fall into place.
I was a die hard Mac addict until I hit a creative software wall that sent me to the dark side because I couldn't afford a new Mac. But I adjusted and moved on and found other ways of being creative and doing similar work. Some times its just making that choice that is the hardest part. Good Luck!
