Just Say
I will report on IBS only on Sundays. I see the GI specialist on Oct 26.
I have had IBS symptoms off and on for about 5 years, not often, intermittent.
2 years ago Doc gave me a stack of charts and said you need to try this Fodmap Diet.
I came home read through it and tossed it.
Stress Aggravated IBS. You know about my stress.
Dairy and Gluten aggravate IBS
I removed both at the beginning of this year, but continued to eat SOME gluten.
as in HAMBURGER on a Bun and Pizza once a month.
For Bob's birthday I decided to give myself a present. 4 days of no cooking
We have not eaten out since Jan 2020.
Although We called out for Pizza 6 times in 2 years.
4 months ago, We had pizza and for 4 days I was miserable.
Canceled Pizza.
Fodmap Diet is working, 8 days with no symptoms.
No gas, no bloat, no pain, no diarrhea .
I reduced my coffee from 4 cups to 2 a day and went on complete Low fodmap. Doing this is causing my weight to fall to rapidly, this is ot meant to be a diet to live on. It is a way to test the foods you can eat. Once symptoms are gone for 20 days, start adding one per day to see if I react to it.
12 days ago, I ate this for lunch (none of this is on my daily diet)
1/2 Cuban sub Mon
1 hotdog bun with sausage and sauerkraut Tues
sausage and sauerkraut, no bun Thurs
Mac and Cheese, turkey w gravy, fried okra, TWO yeast rolls, Fri on Bob's Birthday lunch out.
At 1:30 am Saturday I was up for 2 hours living in the bathroom and a lot of pain. This is just lunch, but most of what i ate was NOT on low fodmap
Trust me when I say gluten is the culprit.
I researched fodmap for days.
I still don't know what Fodmap is.
I don't need to know. I know it works.
Its Simple.
Print the Low and High fodmap lists
Check the food I am about to eat on Low and High Fodmap!
On the high list, exchange it for a food from Low
Any foods not on either list, I talk to my cell and say
Popcorn IBS
GG said. Some can eat it, some can not. It has no nutritional value and is a fiber. Try it and if it upsets your gut, don't eat it again.
Bob said How do you know GG is right?
My answer was if I eat it I find out.
I ate it and it was fine.
I checked all foods before putting on shopping list.
some things I will make for Bob and portion out, for a few days or freeze portions.
I will eat something else.
this is HARD, feeding Bob and something else for me, but I have done it for 8 days.
I am at this moment NORMAL.
Don't fret, I am still MADsnapper.

These links will be so helpful to so many! I had NOT known FODMAP is not a diet for life, but just to test foods. It seems to me you may have Celiac Sprue, a gluten allergy. There is a blood test for it, and you should ask for one when you go for your appointment. I know quite a few people who have this. And I can't believe no doctor has tested you so far!
No wonder FODMAP's an acronym -- I about broke my tongue trying to pronounce what it stands for!
Hearing your experience, I'm convinced my former mother-in-law suffered from food allergies. Sadly, 'back in the day' no-one talked about it; we just learned to adapt our ways to accommodate.
So far, I've no known digestive challenges. Yet, knowing of my (paternal) genetics -- spoken of only in hushed tones -- this information is good to know.

It's the classic "taste it and see" approach... it works and that is what counts. YAM xx
I am glad it is helping, and can just imagine having to fix two different meals. Thst would be bad enough if you liked to cook.
MS by the time 10/26 arrives you won't need the GI to help you. You are doing a good job of figuring it out on your own. My question is: Are you cooking different food for you and Bob?
That must take up all your day and I know you don't like to cook.
Hugs cecilia
Sounds like you found your answer - all you have to do is follow it!
If anyone can fix their IBS, it's you. I really admire how you tackle your eating issues.
My goodness Sandra. I don't mind cooking, but I sure as heck wouldn't like having to cook two meals in one sitting
You go girl!!
Some of your commenters are right - sounding like gluten allergy (coeliac). Interestingly FODMAP might not be the complete answer. It will identify what the triggers are (in context of IBS), but might not tell you if combinations do it or in fact resolve it. For eg i cant eat oranges on their own as a between meals snack, but if Ì combine oranges into a salad with half a dozen other ingredients, they cause no problem. Good to hear that it is definitely msking the likrly culprits clearer.
I’m so glad it’s helping.
Happy you know what's going on and that you feel better for it.
Hello Sandra
My doctor sent me home with the same Fodmap diet years ago too. I was tested for the gluten and lactose intolerance. It is a hard diet to follow, fixing foods that my hubby likes but I could not eat. I love pizza and pasta and both are terrible for me, I usually suffer. You are doing good, I am glad it is helping you. Take care, enjoy your day!
I gave up trying to read what foodmap stands for. It all sounds very confusing to me so I'm very thankful that I don't have IBS
I think my IBS responded exactly opposite to the FODMAP. After so many years, I know exactly what I can and can't eat. Now, to stop eating so MUCH of the non-trigger foods! I am glad you are having success with your IBS diet. Lying on the bathroom floor in pain is a big motivator! Yikes! Sorry that happened.
Bravo for finding something that helps you AND for prepping separate meals so that each of you has a menu that fits your individual health needs.
I haven't been diagnosed but I'm pretty sure I have IBS. I found this post and links very helpful. Thanks.
Sandra, I've never heard of it until now but as long as it is helping YOU, it's all that matters!!! Although it may be difficult, stick to it so you get your "life" back is my advice!...jp
