Why We Lost our garage Door

In yesterday's post, I told you the two-story home that backs up to our yard, the tree was gone from our view.

Above is how it looks now; the trunk is the largest I have ever seen

These are two of my photos of the tree taken on my dog walks with Big Boy 2 years ago.
Click on photos to see just how enormous it was.
This tree fell accross the street, missed two houses and 4 cars. They had to stand the stump back up to get all the limbs off. it took them five days to get it to the stump at the top.

The photo below is from Google maps.

We took a drive with Beau in our neighborhood,
One side is bright/other dark because it was slanted early am sun.
to our left nothing, to our right the whole street piled with debris

Some streets damage on both sides, others none at all.

Ian whipped his tail, and grabbed one side or the other of the street but on our street,
he took both sides of the street

Above is our street, 3 blocks from us, you can see the piles on left and Ian took down 3 city blocks of 8 foot steel fencing, that surrounds the golf course.
He literally blew the fence flat, flatter that above right.

House above is directly across from us, the 4 yellow circles are a light pole and 3 trees down,
below is 2 palms down, the tall one stood, but lost all but one of the fronds.

Ian came across them and to us and behind us to the big Banyan and took down 5 trees and a pole, kicked our garage door in, and
went over our house, leaving our trees standing except for the 1/4 tree he snapped off the tree in our back yard and blew down the enormous banyan.

all over town, we see a block of this and a block with nothing.
It was like his tail winds were picking and kicking one place and not another.
with all of this no one lost their home or cars. Amazing!

Ian was 385 miles wide, the eye was 30 miles south of us.
You can see on the radar, the outer bands were whirling like a giant
whirly gig, one of those whipping tales walloped us and not others.
the red x is us, Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte and Fort myers took the brunt of the storm and there are thousands of homes that are no more.

Wow - that's as good a record of the damage as any news report! The most changes in any landscape other than that made by humans are that made by Ma Nature herself! YAM xx

That tree is enormous. It's amazing that it didn't cause more damage when it fell.

This trunk!!! It is like many tree are coming off it. So it is a Banyon! I have never seen a real one, only on T.V. So the hurricaine had an effect almost like a tornado, what with the whpping around. Gosh, you are so lucky!! Or rather, blessed!

What a miracle that Banyan didn't take down someone's roof or a car!
Weeks later, this destruction still makes me so sad -- both for you and the memories of times spent at my mother's home in Port Charlotte. She always said, "WHEN the hurricane comes" (never "IF") and prepped accordingly -- ignoring mine and Troy's eye-rolls. Well, not a year after she passed Hurricane Charlie hit, and now Ian. Troy remarked, "Well, gram got her hurricane after all."

I am kind of loss for words. That was horrific. I guess your house still standing is a miracle.

MS that might be the largest tree I've seen.
Ian was huge strong and I believe I heard the most vicious Florida has had in many years...maybe ever
Hugs Cecilia and so thank you were only left with a damaged garage door. I was so worried about your new roof

Yay...your garage door is coming...I'm so happy for you.
That Banyan tree was a monster and could have done so much damage to the homes around you.. What a mess.
I just am so sorry for all those people that don't have their homes any longer..
The power of that storm is so hard for me to fathom.
So, So glad you are safe!!!

Wow! That's an amazing tree and good to hear it missed houses and cars. Above all it's a happy day knowing that you, Bob and Beau are okay. It certainly was a monster storm.

That is definitely a huge trunk on that tree. So sad that they lost it. Also thankful it missed the houses and cars across the street. It is amazing how it bounced around.

What a mess! I'm so sorry you had to go through it, but I'm so glad it wasn't worse. And that you are getting your new garage door.

It is so devastating that that fantastic tree was knocked down and also the metal fence. Your post is better than any documentary in describing the force of the storm. It really was a terrifying experience.
