Sunshine Selfies of our Downtown Water tower and tall buildings
We have dozens of these in our county and I have often wondered why, since we have a reservoir to store the water.
The primary function of water towers is to pressurize water for distribution. . With water towers, our customers are assured of adequate, stable water pressure when they open a faucet, wash clothes, or use water in any other way.
A fun story. Daddy's view from the porch of the nuring home he lived in, was of a tower like this one.
He suffered from Parkinsons and dementia. Each time I went to visit, he would say Hi, how long did it take you to get here? In his head he was still 500 miles away in Savannah, and that was always his question when we went to visit him.
Once morning, we were sitting in the sun on the porch and he pointed at the water tower, and said
"Bradenton! I wonder how they moved that big tower here?" meaning to Savannah.
I said, Daddy it had to be a really hard job to move it that far.

I like the bird and the jet stream above the tower. Yes, when our loved ones have this problem, it is best to just go along with what they say, it avoids upsetting them.
Love those beautiful skies.
Hello,
Gorgeous skies. We have a few of the water towers close to the little towns here. We have well water in our neighborhood. Take care, have a happy weekend!

Well, thanks for that informative post and link! When I made my BAR trip to your side of the big pond, I did notice all the water towers and wondered... but never got around to researching them as I may have fallen into the trap of thinking they were simply storage units. Now I know better! YAM xx
Hello Sandra :=) Today I am starting to visit everyone who wished me well, thank you for your prayers. I'm glad to say I am feeling much better, and will be up and running very soon, as I still have two posts ready from my visit to the nature reserve.
I do not have water from the mains but have a well which provides us with pure mountain water. Water towers are new to me. I enjoyed your endearing story about your father, Keeping your father happy and stress free by going along with what he believed was the best way to do this.
Thank you for your visits Sandra, they are much appreciated.
Water towers are a relatively common feature of parts of the UK landscape too. We have even seen a TV program where someone bought and converted a decommissioned one into a spectacular home. (It was a brick tower.) In London there use to be a 'hydraulic company' which used to supply pressured water (from towers) to drive industrial and municipal processes like lifting bridges and opening lock gates on waterways. One of the old water lifted bridges survives near where I used to live in a marina but it no longer lifts (doesn't need to - the canal has been cut off and a supermarket built on it). http://russiadock.blogspot.com/2015/11/the-wonderful-rotherhithe-bascule.html
It is fun to see how different all the water towers are around the country. Some have amazing details painted on them-others just the name of the town. My father also had Parkinson's but without the dementia. It was such a sad thing to watch the progression of the disease. I smiled about the answer you gave him. Happy weekend-xo Diana
I know your dad loved you and you him. I am just wondering how the golden years got it's name. I haven't found it yet.
It's sad when we get confused like that but it could happen to any of us. Love your photos!
I love Water towers...and OMDs you clouds appear to be about to land
Hugs Cecilia
I'd no idea the purpose of a water tower! See! Now I've a fascinating factoid if I'm ever pressed for conversation at a cocktail party --- or a contestant on Jeopardy, whichever comes first. (NOT!)
That conversation with your daddy makes my heart happy.
I also never knew about water towers...thanks for the info!!
I always thought the towers were some sort of storage system but actually never gave it much thought. It has always been just part of the landscape.
Great photos and your answer to your Daddy was perfect. It sure made your conversation with him easier and satisfying in his mind.
Sue
Our town has a water tower, too...but only one.
That is a sweet story. I love seeing water towers, especially old ones. We saw some driving through Texas which I liked.
