How old is the oldest sheet in your home? perhaps you may call them bed linens. Is it a set? Flat or fitted? Why do you still have old sheets?
I have 2 white flat sheets from my wedding shower in 1963 and about 6 pillowcases. My dad was pastor of a small church, about 100 members. The entire church was invited to my wedding. Daddy to perform the ceremony. I had 3 different showers. Everyone came and I ended up with a dozen sets of sheets and cases, 5 shower curtains, 6 tablecloths. Back then sheets came in twin or double. As the years passed, we went to queen and then to dual king. The sheets were like new and still are.
I just can't throw out old sheets, towels, wash cloths. Or ragged throw rugs. The hall closet is full of all of this because I can use rugs to keep water from coming in the back door during Storms or in the garage to keep water out. Old towels are for dog baths
I keep the sheets, because of what if!
. Emergency Only Linens. What if I fell and was bleeding and needed to do a tourniquet?
What if I ran out of bandages and needed sheets to rip into strips to wrap the cut. daddy did that to all my cuts, he ripped old material into strips and wrapped around and around and split the end and tied in a knot. That is what we did back in the 40's and 50's.
what if the country burst into Civil War and we have no electric or washers. We can swap sheets while we beat the others clean on rocks in the creek. Alas we have no creek...or wash boards..

Beating them on rocks gave me SUCH a laugh!! I recently had to buy two new sheet sets. I got the jersey kind, so they are not as cold when you get in bed and they are soft like a T-shirt. But of COURSE I save all the old ones, old towels as well (I need them to wipe up spills and leaks).
I have no idea but I have a linen cupboard that is in desperate need of a tidy up and throw out.
I have no idea. I have some i haven't used yet. Bought years ago.
Smiling here. At least I know you are ready for the apocalypse! I have sheets that are years old and they look like new. I also have old towels that are frayed and sad looking that I use for spills. They have come in useful at times. Really do need to clear my cupboards out!!! Spring cleaning in my future.

I can state quite confidently that the oldest sheet in this home is eleven years old. I crossed the world, remember, and had to start from scratch on such things. I also only have two sets per bed (two beds - no three, if you count the van). Your thought for other uses is very valid and definitely there is every reason to hold onto old "Manchester" home linens are referred to in OZ. (Because at one time, all cottons and other fabrics came down under from that manufacturing city...) YAM xx
None of my sheets are very old. We had a water bed for a while so I had gotten rid of all the regular sheets then when I went back to a regular bed I got rid of the waterbed sheets. I've since cleaned the cupboard out whenever I've bought new sheets. I do have sets with both top and bottom sheets.
I have no idea the age of our oldest sheets. I only buy the sets but we do keep the old ones. They make great drop cloths. Take care, have a wonderful day!
Don't worry. I have big stocks of all the same things too!
We used to have nylon sheets - they were very popular at one time. None of our sheets are very old - they wear into holes. Even the duvet covers develop holes after a while - it's the dogs!
Old sheets are used here for covering plants when we have a freeze/frost warning, like today. However, I no longer have a lot of plants in my yard that really need to be covered, so I was lazy and didn't cover anything. My potted poinsettias that are still alive from Christmas are huddled under the glass patio table on the covered back porch. So far so good, I can see them from my window here as I type, and they aren't drooping, so I think they survived. It is 32 degrees right now! Old sheets are for covering things when you paint, but I haven't done any of that since we moved in here, and I probably won't. These walls are manufactured home wall boards that have a printed pattern on them. I like the walls in the main part of the house, but the bathrooms and kitchen I would like to do something with, but it would take a LOT of paint to cover up those designs that are built into the wall board. So I just live with it. It's not unbearable and I make it work. I have old sheets for emergencies just in case we have lots of company and have to make beds for everyone on the couches or floor or something, but I can't imagine that happening unless there is an apocalypse somewhere and everyone came here to survive. But since we live in a manufactured home, we'd probably already be gone anyway. LOL. Right now I have a new set of sheets unopened waiting for the weather to warm up so I can take the flannel sheets off the bed and use these. Hopefully they will fit the mattress better than my other old sheets did. What else do you want to know? I love your sun pictures, especially the cane. I have a cane like that. It belonged to my grandfather, then my grandmother, then my father, and now it's mine. It has been a lot of places, but now it sits in my bathroom within reach of the throne in case I need help getting up from the throne. It's also good for reaching the door handle and closing the door if I ran in there in a hurry and forgot to close the door! That does happen, you know! LOL. Happy Wednesday my friend. I hope this brought a smile to your face. It did mine. Thank you for your fun and interesting posts!
I have one duvet-cover that I know is 20 years old because I remember buying it when I bought my bed - which I know was when I turned 50. I still use it sometimes - I have a few that I vary between. One or two might even be older, but I'm not sure. Since ?? years I use fitted sheets and I have two of those, but I have also kept a few older flat sheets that I use for guests, or "what if" situations. But I know that I do NOT still have the very first two sets of bedlinen that I bought when I moved away from home 50 years ago. But I do have some linen kitchen towels that belonged to my mother, and one of them is marked BN, which means it is from before she got married, and therefore it is older than myself!
I too, keep the old sheets...right now, some of them are covering my outdoor plants to shield them from the cold. I have a linen closet full of sheets. I even have the sheets that my parents had. LOL.. when they passed away, I just couldn't see getting rid of perfectly good sheets and towels. I am definitely a hoarder with it comes to these kind of things. BUT...they are all clean, folded neatly and stored away.
I got so many towel when I got married that I had them for years, because like you I just couldn't throw them away.
You made me laugh with your reasons for keeping them. Glad someone is prepared!
I like your shadow photos.
Cool shadow shots!
You are so funny! Yet, here I sit feeling there's something the matter with me because I've only 2-and-a-half sets: One for me and the other just in case we get overnight company. While making the bed yesterday it actually crossed my mind to invest in a spare (set), then I thought of everything else I could use the $ for. Maybe you could hold an on-line 'garage sale' and I'll be your first customer.
Such wonderful sun paintings and sheet ramblings!!
What a fun post about your shower.
We have 2 queens and 1 double bed which is part of the bedroom suite Bryan's parents bought when they were married. You might remember seeing Madi on the bed it had a front row view of all going on. I have 2 sets of queen sheets and 2 sets of double none are old. I do have a set of pillow cases that are very a treasure. Bryan's Mom crocheted 3" borders on them.

I know you're not a hoarder, but you're a sheet hoarder? I think it's cool you have sheets that old that have moved with you so many times.
Have a fabulous day and rest of the week. Scritches to Beau. ♥
I have more sheets than I know what to do with...but like you, I just can't throw them out. There are twin sets for the trundle bed (for company) queen sets for the other guest bed and when we moved here 17 years ago we bought a Cal King. Nothing we had fit it so now we have 4 sets for rotation. I think its time to clean out the linen closet. Things have gotten so jumbled that I'm really not sure what's in there..lots of towels...some as old as when we got married 61 years ago and tablecloths of various sizes..oh my, what a project !!
Great question for the blog today and I do love the shadow shots.

When I downsized, I had to get rid of some. I had kept them all like you - however downsizing twice changes things. I did give to Homeless shelters and places like that, so I felt okay with my old treasures.
