Just Call Me Ginny!

Are you straining your brain trying to decipher the post title? and also what IS this photo? and Why is it here?

Choice reading material for our Wildlife in Florida. Have you guessed yet what/where/when/why?

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers. Charles W. Eliot

Books were my pass to personal freedom. I learned to read at age three, and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi. Oprah Winfrey

If you guessed mural on the side of a book mobile, you got it right.

Saturday AM I stepped out of my truck at the library and staring me in the face I found the book mobile. I took several shots of what I normally would have ignored before I fell under the influence of Ginny, author of Let Your Light Shine . Ginny has  been known to take photos of her TV screen, Whine Bottles and newspapers. Inspired by her out of the ordinary, here is my theft by google photos of historical book mobiles.

NO, I did NOT take these two photos, but my parents could have

The United States Bookmobile Today

While bookmobile services have slightly declined over the past two decades, the bookmobile remains an integral part of the American cultural landscape. With the exception of Maine, all U.S. states offer traveling branch library service, with Kentucky leading the pack at 98 bookmobiles!
the above photo was taken in 1953 in Kentucky, I was in the same county with this one and living there at the time this was taken. Growing up my life was enriched by reading from these wonderful traveling library's and I was please to find they are still around even in these Modern Times of Technology.

If you find this post just a little on the ODD side, just scroll back up and click on Ginny's blog and tell her I said it is all her fault.

PS.... have you noticed there are several of us bloggers who just can't seem to do a wordless or short post?

Well if you had just posted that first photo with that title, and no further explanation - then I would not have understood! even though I do follow Ginny's blog, too! :D

Love your old bookmobile photos! We have library busses in Sweden too but I don't think I ever actually used one because there have been other library services in the places where I've lived.

Great blog. I didn't know they had book mobiles that far back in time.

This is a GREAT post!! Of course that would not have anything to do with the fact that it's partially about ME!! Thanks a whole bunch for your wonderful words! I was so happily surprised to see the reading cat was on the side of a truck!! Remember the aquarium truck I took a picture of? I wish I'd have posted it and made people guess where it was. These are wonderful pictures! But what's up with Maine, anyway?? That last bookmobile picture sure does look like a renovated ice-cream truck to me!! Can you see it, too, or do I just see food in everything? It would be good to combine an ice-cream truck with a Bookmobile in the summer.

I didn't find this odd at all -- it was rather interesting. It's nice to know that there are still bookmobiles serving the public.
When will we see a shot from your TV screen?

Very cool, I really like the cat's choice of reading materials.

You brought back a lot of memories with the bookmobiles, I haven't seen one in many years. I never used them all that much because the library was so close but I enjoyed seeing them.

Snap everything, you never know when it might come in handy.

Oh how cute.... Knowing both you and Ginny---I'll say that you two sisters have learned from each other....Both of you have great blogs. Oh how I despise those Wordless ones ---when people put a picture and none of us have any idea what it is all about... Drives me crazy!!!!!

Love all of the old Book Mobiles... You did good. I'm sure that Ginny is pleased.
Hugs,
Betsy

I use to love it when the bookmobile came. I had not thought of them in years. Glad to know they are still in operation. This brought back some good memories.
