Ca D' Zan (House of John)

I spent 5 hours at the Ringling Museum on New Years Eve day, can you guess what you will be seeing in the next few weeks? there are 4 Museums and a library on 66 acres, my favorite is
Ca d' Zan, House of John (1866 -1936) and Mable (1875 - 1929) Ringling            Info from Ringling Museum

Ca da Zan was completed in 1925, Cost 1.5 million, is  200 feet long - 36,000 sq feet.

the house has 2 fronts, this one faces the road, the one in the header is the front that faces Sarasota Bay

In 1925 visitors came by boat, the only access was a logging trail through swampland

41 rooms, 15 bathrooms, five stories high, basement

the tower is 81 foot high
Not bad for a winter home.
It’s not the Holiday Inn, it’s the Rest of the Year Inn.

above is the Sun Porch.
this  house is so big, you need a GPS to find your way to the master bedroom each night.
Or you could  have a different bedroom for each day of the week.

I've been there--many, many years ago. I remember not having allowed enough time to see all that I wanted to and promising to return. The photos are great.

Fifteen bathrooms? No waiting I suppose.

Best,
Bonnie

What a house! I sure wouldn't want to have to clean it. Very beautiful.

1.5 million was a lot of money in 1925, imagine what it's worth today!
Can't wait to see more pics :)

Did you go up in the tower and walk around the walkway? What's up there, anyway, Rapunzel? The sun room looks like a regular house! But I like those pretty semi-circular stairs. Now you know we can't wait to get inside! Do I get a cheaper ticket because I'm a senior? I can't wait for the tour to start! I love these kinds of things, because it's almost like being there, and I know I will never get to actually go.

This house is as specatuclar (and almost as big) as Biltmore in Asheville. Could you take pictures inside the house?

Oh how neat, Sandra. AND--it brought back memories since I visited there in the early '70's... I lived in Venice at the time, and we had company... We took them to the museum and also to Jungle Gardens. Is that still there????

We used to eat at the Windjammer in Sarasota... And we loved to go to Siesta Key...

LOTS of great memories...
Hugs,
Betsy

It is lovely... certainly you would have space to put everything and have a special craft room for sewing and scrapbooking and computering and photography and all those wonderful things we like to do.

Beautiful, I can't wait to see more! Some friends and I were driving down to Ft. Meyers many years ago and talkied about stopping at the museum but we ran out of time, now I can see it through your photos Sandra. It probably looks a lot better now than it did back then anyway.
