Squirrel and the Avacado

The wind on Saturday blew down 15 Avocados. The wind stopped but the fruit kept dropping. They fall from way up high and when they hit the ground it sounds like a bomb. I know when they fall from the big THUMP!  I heard a thump, and  15 minutes later a second Thump. I could see this from the bedroom window.
I raced outside to retrieve it, to keep the dogs from eating it. Placed it in the trash. Yet another THUMP!
this time it was a whole one with a beady eyed squirrel staring at it from half way down the tree.

Hubby wants to do the squirrels HARM because they chew holes in the fruit making them fall.

I watched with much laughter as a grown man  stomped his feet, raised his voice, shooed with his arms up over his head trying to make the dastardly squirrel go away.

SHH don't tell anyone but he actually threw a stick up in the tree, with a  near miss of it hitting himself on the head when it came down.

I was hysterical watching from the kitchen window. It was a sight, believe me, and we all KNOW squirrels are here to stay. It is not as though there is only ONE of the little guys.

To protect the squirrels and my hubby from harm, I took the half chewed one back outside and placed it where we found it and said to hubby, maybe he will eat it and leave the others alone.

I returned to my window view and waited and within 60 seconds, he was there. I shot this through the bedroom screen as we watched the little devil devour avocado at an alarming rate of speed.
I carefully slid the door open and he let me walk to with in 5 feet, Madly Snapping, as I am want to do.

Suddenly he stared at the camera and raced up the tree.
There is no happy ending to this story. I continued to hear THUMPS and this morning we picked up what was numbers 23, 24 and 25. We took 15 of them to the YMCA at 5:30 AM and by 6:30 they were gone.

Looks like the squirrels think it's their birthright to eat that fruit! I would love to watch such thing from my window as well:)

Wow ~ how wonderful to have an Avocado tree! But I can sure see how the squirrels would be a bother about them. The birds always peck holes in our apples before we can eat them. :(

Crazy critters!!

I look at the $$$$$ goin' in that squirrels tummy and want to scream. The money I pay for just one of those and he gets them for free... I think your hubby maybe would like for one to fall from the tree and knock its little lights out...

Great story and great pictures! Those cute little fellows/girls cause a lot of aggravation. Poor Bob.....I am surprised the squirrel let you get that close. I guess he/she figured if you put the avacodo there for him/her, you are not the enemy...
Love ya, Madeline

I'm surprised the squirrel decided to eat the same one. When it comes to app;es in my trees they take a few bites, let it fall to the ground, and then repeat the process. Lots of apples with a few bites eaten out of them here!

It always does my heart good to see the critters outside eating....we always leave treats for them each morning and afternoon....

I'm glad we're not the only ones who have trouble with squirrels. With the golf course behind us, a vacant lot beside us, and a vacant lot across the street there's no way to make them go away. As I write this I can see two squirrels racing across the street from our front lawn.

Too funny and too cute!!!! And great shots with your new camera!! Well, Phil recently threw a rock at a woodpecker, and has been known to wave his arms at them and shout. The woodpecker is Phil's squirrel!! Because he comes early mornings and pecks on our bedroom windowsill rat-a-tat-tat!! Bob may have succeeded in shooing the squirrel away temporarily, but they always come back. Now I have a friend, a fellow deacon, and she traps the squirrels in cages and hubby drives them 25 miles away!!! No kidding. This may interest Bob. They say that if you take squirrels away, they will always find themselves back to the exact same spot if it is under 25 miles. Gas up and get the tires inflated, Bob, you're in for some long trips!!! And you wouldn't harm any of those cute little rodents now, would you? Just think of the babies that would starve!

I'm with your hubby.... I hate those things!!!!! They can do so much damage... The worst thing for us was when the squirrels started eating the buds on our big Rhododendron... I was ready to find a GUN!!!!! ha ha

BUT--you are right. They are here to stay..... Darn it all.
Hugs,
Betsy

I had no idea squirrels eat avocados. But then of course our squirrels here will probably never have had the chance of trying one! ;)

Sandra you know I LOVE squirrels! I love all animals, but when it comes to doggies and squirrels they'e my weakness. These pics along with your story brought tears from laughing so hard! You got some great pics of that little guy! He looked so happy with that big avocado in front of him! I bet there's a lot of animals that feel we're in their way of living and I try to respect all living creatures. :) Thanks for this funny story today...very much needed!

The squirrels in our yard are driving us crazy. Never been bothered by them before but this year they ate so much of our fruit and now they are leaving the shells of the chestnuts all over.
Pesty!! I don't want them making a nest in our roof or something.
Great pictures Sandra. That little guy eating all the avocados must have the best "skin" in town from all the beauty oils.

Hey, squirrels have to make a living somehow!

Great shots! Your squirrels look so tiny compared to our Fox squirrels.
