HGTV rant by Madsnapper

As you can see from these two photos, our bathrooms are still stuck in the 60's when Gold and Green were The THING.... they are both 5 x 10 in size and have all three things NEEDED....

I love HGTV but I do have a few rants.....about a few of my favorite shows...

House Hunters:
Couple looking for a new home, tight  budget Long List  of MUST HAVES.
Male/Female will walk into a bathroom the size of my second bedroom and say ... "this is so SMALLLLL". and I have to have MARBLE and I hate those lights.

I shout GET REAL.... you are on a budget of 125,000 ... what do you intend to DO in that bathroom...just how much time do you spend in a bathroom?

Another favorite  "I know we said we are downsizing but 1800 sq feet is just not big enough, Plus, there is just NOT enough Closet Space....
I yell.... YOU SAID you are downsizing? that means get rid of what will not fit in the new place....

Note: I am not against big homes or bathrooms so if you have one, don't get mad at me... it is the BUDGET part and that they want more than they can afford.

two more shows.. and I will stop...I could go on for HOURS

First Sale... they are selling there first home to get bigger and better because she is pregnant with first child and they only have 1600 square feet and it is FULL.... We just can't bring a child into this crowded space.

I yell at them. What?I  raised my kids in a 3/1 that was 900 square feet. Bob raised 3 kids in a 980 sq feet and we had plenty of room...

First Sale.. they are buying their first  home.

I nearly split my sides laughing.. She decided the one bedroom in DC was not big enough if they want to have a family.
She says to her hubby, I quit my job to get one making more money so we will qualify for a larger home. If we sell this one bedroom condo, we can get 150,000 to put with our savings and have 200,000 to pay down on a bigger home...
YIKES! I am thinking, Lady get the job FIRST....and  I was right. by the end of the show, the condo they listed sold and closed in 30 days and they did not qualify to buy anything even with 200,000 down because she had NO JOB....

He said, "don't worry, we will be OK, we can move in with YOUR parents until you find a job. They did move in and 6 weeks later she found a job, but guess what? the area they wanted to live in, there old neighborhood, the houses were WAY above what they could afford. It went off the air with them
still with Mom and Dad and me howling with laughter and shouting
IDIOTS!

Which one of you just said "well why do you watch them MadSnapper?"
BECAUSE I LOVE THEM... makes me feel so wise and smart and GOOD

You and I are shouting the same things! I cannot tell you how many times I have said, "Are the going to plan bathroom parties or what?" to need such big bathrooms. Mine gets the job done just fine and I prefer no company in there with me.

hahahah People, do they even hink about what they are saying?

I think you decorated your vintage bathrooms very attractively. The gold, I had that gold. Our kitchen and bathroom were that color too. We did have them redone eventually. But we lived with them for a while first....like 20 years!

I like the ones looking for a home on a limited budget and don't feel comfortable going over $1.2 million. To be honest, I don't feel like going over $1.2 million either!! If you wait long enough, your bathrooms will be back in style!!

Best,
Bonnie

I watch HGTV all the time and I am the same way. The producers must make the couple be idiots in order to get our blood boiling!!!
By the way, your bathrooms are very pretty.

ha ha. don't watch them at all.

I hear you...why do you need a great old big house that you can't afford to raise kids...Mom and Dad both have to work...kids get raised by others...come on folks a little common sense...Bigger is not always better....kids sharing rooms is not a bad thing...teaches them to be able to live in the world...a whole family sharing one bathroom is a valuable learning experience...you can't always get what you want when you want it...sometimes you have to put others first...or wait your turn...okay...I'm done...for now...
PS I like your bathroom

HGTV IS MY FAVORITE TOO. AND OH DO I AGREE WITH YOU. THESE YOUNG COUPLES FEEL THEY DESERVE THE MOON AND MORE...WE ALL STARTED WITH LESS AND THAT IS THE THING TO DO TO KEEP YOURSELF OUT OF THE POOR HOUSE W ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD.

AS WE START DOWN THIS PATH TO SALE MY PARENT'S HOME I'M HEARING ALL OF THIS IN MY HEAD AS I WALK AROUND THE HOUSE. IT HAS THE DREADED COTTAGE CHEESE CEILINGS (NOT REMOVING THEM NO WAY SO DEAL WITH IT). IT IS NOT AN OPEN CONCEPT, NOT KNOCKING OUT ANY WALLS FOR YOU.
THE BATHROOM DOES NOT HAVE MARBLE COUNTERS, NOPE NOT PUTTING THOSE IN FOR YOU EITHER. I EXPECT WE WILL HAVE TO PAINT AND REPAIR SOME DOOR FRAMES THAT WERE DINGED BY THE WHEEL CHAIR. REALTOR HAS AN ISSUE WITH THE WALL PAPER. WELL IN MY OPINION ANY YOUNG COUPLE WHO BUYS WILL REMODEL ETC. SO I WILL HAVE TO WEIGH THE PROS AND CONS TO TAKING DOWN WALLPAPER AND PAINTING FOR THEM...JUST SO THEY CAN REPAINT IT.

LOL! You make me giggle.

Well first off - you know I love green and so I like your green bathroom! But yea, maybe the gold has to go. Silver? But if it's hardware, I know from just buying 6 sets of new door knobs ~ they aren't cheap!!! Let alone new bathroom taps or faucets.

Oh yes, I love watching HGTV too. I like House Hunters too. "But there isn't any granite...the appliances aren't stainless steel...I don't like the paint color..." OMG you people!! Yes, when they 'simply can not live' in a house under 1800 square feet...honestly...get real people.

I wouldn't mind a bit bigger house (especially one with a garage) too, but I am not going into major house debt to do it. I laugh at these people with high mortgages that cry about never being able to retire... ummm... perhaps you could get a smaller house??

Yup, I like me my HGTV too.

I used to watch this show and frankly the materialistic attitudes of some of the people (and stupidity of others) turned me off! The ones that really get me are the very young couples who want to have the very best and aren't willing to settle for what most of the rest of us live in. Maybe they won the lottery or something, but don't these kids stop to think about saving money or living within their means?

Maybe I need to tune in again...I never thought to look at these shows as a comedy! Haha!

I was hooked on house hunters for a long time. That was how I traveled. :) I remember seeing a couple on there that were expecting their first child. They lived in Cary, NC and were looking for a larger home. That's when I first thought Cary is a pretty place.
First, is your bathroom green? I don't see green, I see a yellow gold color.
You made me laugh so hard with this post! Just perfect!! Thank you!!!

YESYESYESYESYES!!!! Me, TOO! The same thing as you! I watch this channel once in awhile and like to see that show where the couple has to choose between three houses. They HAVE to stay under budget, but when they look at the houses, she does not want one if even a throw rug is not right!!! It's like the women think they will not have to make a single compromise and still get everything they want! Not unless there was a triple murder just in that house! and maybe not then! And THEN, the house they pick is the one that looks like it has the least of what they want! And it is ALWAYS the woman complaining, the poor husband just trails behind wishing for this hell to end. Your bathroom looks just like mine, the layout and size, sink between toilet and tub, toilet by the door? Our bathroom is teeny, two people will barely fit. But I have been SO blessed to have it tiny because I have to get up from the toilet by pushing on the sink, it it so good everything is all close!!! Sometimes small is a good thing. You should replace Roger Ebert on T.V. your title could be "Sandra's Stupid shows and Other Delights"

Living in rented flats all my grown-up life I never got to choose the interior of any bathroom beyond towels and shower curtain.

That's the difference in today's generation and our generation. We did with less --and never expected more at that time...

I see this in my kids' families... My oldest grandson is a Senior in high school. The family bought him an old car --but he is not 'made' to work part-time (like my 3 sons did) to pay for his gas and insurance. What???? This 'ex' daughter-in-law said that she doesn't want her kids to have to work --but to enjoy school. Huh???? There's not much money in the household--so the DIL begs us and the rest of the family for money to help him. I helped once --but that is ALL. That boy needs a part-time job.... It's a different world.

I'm not sure what is going to happen in our country in the future... It's scary to see the young adults going deeper and deeper in debt and yet not willing to work several jobs if necessary to make ends meet.....

AH---you got me started.

Hugs,
Betsy

That's what I do watching those programs too.
Get real, People!!
Perfect world maybe but .....
Maybe a few people need to live with hardships and cramped quarters and not be handed everything on a silver platter.

I am totally with you on all those things! If I hear one of those stupidos saying that they can't buy a place without granite and stainless steel or complaining about the color of the walls, I think I will scream. Well, not really. They are mostly young and not very realistic. I suppose I was, too, about some things. But really???

Ann said...

LOL, these young couples today would never have made it back in the day. We started out in a 12 x 60 mobile home. One bathroom and today I still only have one bathroom OMG, how do I survive.
Is it just me or are most of them on the spoiled side

I am not addicted to all that HGTV real estate porn, but I would be if I could wrest the remote from my hubby's grasp. I still manage to see enough to share your amazement at the attitudes and priorities among most of the house-hunting couples.

You make me laugh on a regular basis. The bigger the house the more cleaning there is. Unless one has a maid of course.

Dee said...

LOL...soooo true...my favorite is when they want a vintage home with all the woodwork etc but complain it does not have walk in closets or a bathroom in the bedroom. And if i hear stainless steel and granite one more time i may pull the plug....LOL

Dee said...

forgot to add (jumped the gun with publish) that your bath room looks nice. It is much better then the generic bathroom of my apartment.

I'm going to have to start watch HGTV when I need a chuckle.

I used to watch HGTV a lot especially House Hunters but some of the people they had on there were so unrealistic in their expectations that it began to get on my nerves. How big of a bathroom do you want people? They set a limit on the price they will pay and then complain about every little thing. All I wanted was two bathrooms and a good size kitchen. Wrong color paint? We changed it ourselves.

Beatrice P. Boyd said...

Sandra, thanks for the morning laughs and best of all it's all TRUE, especially the part about bathroom size. This older home has a small full bathroom with all the essentials. But one of the comments, the realtor told us folks looking said is that it's too small! Our house located anywhere else would be a lot more $ so it is the location that also matters. We do not watch TV or subscribe to any cable services here, but I did SO enjoy shows like the one you mentioned when we lived in NJ and watched cable TV.....better than those reality atav shows!

One good thing about getting older is we're getting wiser too. I think we see things a tad more clearly than we did when we were young. And we know we don't need most of the stuff we've purchased in the past.

Having said that, I think there are an awful lot pf people out there who simply are NOT rational. ;))

Anita Johnson said...

OK, I have many of the same complaints too. People can't live without granite? Come on. It's ridiculous. I know it is just a show, but the materialism is a trend that I don't like to see.
Your beach art shots are very nice. I hope your surgery goes well too.

I loved this post:)
I watch all sorts of HGTV and love the crazy homes people have put together around the world.
That young folks want so much in a home doesn't surprise me. Movies and TV shows have taught them to have unrealistic expectations.
The future will be very different. Condos are getting smaller but pricier.
