Poetry Lover or NOT

When the word Poetry came from my teachers mouth in high-school, I ZONED OUT.
Teacher forced me to memorize Double, Double, Toil and Trouble, Fire burn and cauldron bubble...etc etc.... I was livid and terrified to stand and recite it. And truth told, that line is the only thing I remember.

Fast Forward 50 some odd years later, and  in blog land I find a new friend,Gail at the Farm.
Gail writes poems, she actually loves poetry and the writing there of and joins meme's that force her to write a poem by giving words or a photo as the prompt...
Below is a photo prompt from her post, named Time Lost

Her poem was great and could be read from the bottom or from the top.  I have tried to write poems from prompts, it doesn't happen. I wrote this comment of what the photo made me feel.

all those clocks behind the man, made me think
the clock of Time has brought me to this place in time, Waiting on a bench that is like the graveyard the elephants go to and wait to die. or maybe that bench is a nursing home

Here is the poem she emailed me. It means the same thing, but is a  poem.

Time moves
As slow as elephants
That plod to their death
Left alone to die
No one left to walk with him
To his graveyard
With nothing left but time.
  Gail Williams

Gail has taught me to understand the poems but not to write them.

I have no talent either when writing poetry-but I also have a couple of blog friends who write terrific poetry. Daisy wrote a cute one this week about Squirrels... Susie writes about life... Both gals are super-talented.

Hugs,
Betsy

Thanks for the link. Your blog friend is very clever with words. It reminds me of my primary school days when we were shown a picture and had to write about it. Poetry is very different, but it's good to be challenged although I have no talent for it. I like to read other people's poetry and try and work out the meaning.

Actually I like your free form style.
I got it and it does describe the picture.
Her poem is great but I love the way you tell it like it is on your blog.
Keep doing what you are doing , girlfriend.

Poetry was never my favorite part of Literature.

Thank you so much!!!! I am not a poet but do like to play with words. You are far too kind and equally too hard on yourself.

Like the "cawh". I think that's how they spelled it.

Thank you again for honoring me...I am blushing!

OHHHHHHH!!! I love poems and always have. I used to write them with my best friend and we kept them in notebooks. For someone who does not like them, you sure can write one heck of an awesome one. I couldn't believe your words and your insights, for someone who says she does not like it. When I read what you write it gave me the shivers all up and down my body. It is sad and hopeless, but written as the truth in such a beautiful way, and your blog friend said you had gotten the meaning perfectly! I now want us to pick one day a month or whatever and show a picture and write a poem on our feelings abut it. By the way, this picture is amazing!!! Time rules and we are but it's subjects. I am off to visit your poetry friend now.

I can make words rhyme and back in high school I used to write all kinds of poems. When it comes to understanding poetry though forget it. I don't get most of them

I enjoy reading some poetry but I do not have the talent to write it.
Gail's version is great but I also enjoy yours as well. Don't be so hard on yourself.

Pretty deep thoughts you had there! Some people just have the knack for arranging them!

I enjoy reading poetry - good poetry, that is. I appreciate writers who think deeply and know how to express their feelings.

Having said that, I also enjoy visiting your blog. And I LOVE the way you think. ;)

I gotta say - poems - not for me. Can't seem to figure them out - I remember one year Kelly and I tried to decipher and write a paper of a poem of Emily Dickinson. We got an F - in high school. How did the teacher know she didn't mean what we thought?

And Andy just learned the entire poem - The Light Brigade - If- and now Oh Captain My Captain!!!

I do know what you mean- some people just have that ability to make it into poetry - to take an idea, paint a vivid description, meander here and there, taking time to flesh it out. This is why I'm not a novelist or a poet. I end up with the straightest route from A to Z. But good writing of any kind - poetry or prose - can just nurture the heart and mind.

Your a poet.
You just don't know it.
But your feet show it.
They are long fellows.

I heard that one when I was a kid.
