Popular Styles in the 1920's

Back in the Good Old Days, every home had a porch. There was nothing to do inside the homes when summer heat came. The porch was a refuge. The best ones were screened in. Bugs Love Florida.

My grandmothers porch looked like the one above. Remove the brick and the white columns and it is just like it. The swing below my grandfather built in the 20's and it hung on the porch until 1969 when my grandmother died. Mother took it to Savannah, GA from here, and it hung on the back porch until she died in 1990, and I bought it back here and it sat on our pool deck for several months until Bob hung it. Sadly, not on a porch it fell apart a few years ago.

I spent hours swinging and reading on my grandmothers porch and hours I did not enjoy sitting on it in Savannah, shelling peas and corn and snapping green beans. Sadly I no longer look like I did 28 years ago. Max died in 2002.

I have to say that you are so HOT in this picture! You look like a beauty queen. So sad that the swing has gone to the great porch above. But how cool that you have it's picture so you can never forget how it looked. Houses...I'll have the little blue one and the first one. How much I remember the big screened in porch that I grew up in. We practically lived there. I rolled my marbles down the ramp for hours at a time. On balmy evenings we would sit there and listen to the crickets while Granny sang Mockingbird Hill. I have NEVER had a porch since. So the last time I saw it I was 12. I'm sure it would look so much smaller now. It now represents everything...innocence, a safe world, a large family. All gone with the wind now. I will look in my picture file, I think I have a picture of the porch. I snagged it off a real estate ad. I'll send it to you.

What a pin up girl!!! And no one looks like they did 28 years ago!!!!
We lived in two houses that remind me of yours in this post. The houses were rented and not well kept but I did love the porch.

My parents and grandparents had screened in porches and back in the 60's, our summers were spent watching traffic pass by on those porches, or stringing beans, etc., or visiting with neighbors.

Those really big porches all along the house, not very common here. Some had/have a small one, though. Nowadays, more common to add a large deck or conservatory at the back of the house rather than at the front, I think.

Sadly there are very few of us that look like we did 28 years ago. If there are any of us who do I want to know their secret :)
A big covered front porch has always been on my wish list. Screened in would be even better. Keep those mosquitoes away on warm summer nights

I love the tin roof on that bungalow!! A question: How did scientists find out that blind mosquitos were blind? And, are they only in Florida?

Best,

Oh MS what memories you stirred up in my head. Yes sitting on the porch as the hot sun set. Playing hide and seek with the cousins and yes sometimes I actually snapped a green been or two. I did pick up 87 million lbs of pecans in the back yard.

Hello, I would think a screened in porch is a must in Florida. Cute shot of you by the pool. The park looks beautiful. I hope you have a great day and a happy new week ahead!

I love that style of home. I love that houses had those big porches. Homes today have NO personally and no porch! So glad that you were able to enjoy your granny's swing for some time before it fell apart. You have the memories and that is awesome.

You're beautiful Sandra! Like a film star / beauty queen as Ginny says! Imagine if that swing could talk, the stories it would've told! Thanks for a walk down memory lane.

Ahh, One of my favorite house styles - Craftsman. Great for Florida. The deep eaves keep the inside shaded. But doesn't look like that gal 28 years ago was looking for shade ;)

I have always dreamt of having a porch.I don't suppose that will ever happen, but I do now have a nice deck to sit on.

Oh the secrets and conversations that porch swing must have heard over its lifetime!

I was just ordering something for my dad, and the salesperson said that her great great grandma is 97, born in 1921! Can you imagine the changes that she's seen in her life? I'd say that the porches from her birth era are the best!!!! I adore porches or decks (few bugs here in Colorado) that go all the way around the house. Ours doesn't but we've talked about trying to expand it!

Boy, you're not kidding about the bug population! I'm so impressed by your swing's longevity ... imagine the tales it could tell! And YOU look absolutely smashing!

Screen-less porch or not, I absolutely adore that first home/

She actually saved her porch - interesting.

You know your first photo - that was my grandmother's house in Indiana. I used to sit on that porch for ever - it was so much fun. Peaceful. Love, sandie

I love the character of old homes and when there are bugs around, screens are a must!! We never had that type of porch but we did have a deck where my sister and I would sunbathe. I used to spray my hair with lemon juice, haha what was I thinking?
Have a great week!

I love porches and wish I had one. Our deck is nice but it would be better to have a roof overhead. Back before a/c, people used to sleep on their screened-in porches when the weather was hot.
You were a cutie pie 28 years ago. I not only wish I looked like I did 28 years ago, but I wish I had the energy I had back then even more!

We also had a front porch in VA and it was great to sit outdoors and watch the world go by. Admittedly, in a small town on a residential side street there often were not many human passerbys. Birds and butterflies were also fun to watch. And, being on the porch during a warm summer rain was wonderful. There were no screens so mosquitoes could be troublesome, but we lit citronella candles which helped. We also dined on the front porch especially for breakfast.
