Vintage Ice Cream Shortning Spoon

This vintage shortening and ice cream spoon belonged to my grandmother, from her to my mother and in 1990 to me.... Lots of wonderful things were created in the 1940's, Like me, it was made in the early 1940's and was intended for ice cream from a churn and for tubs of lard. Soft things, not the hard ice cream bricks we have today.

Did you have an ice cream churn when you were a child?
Did you stand and turn and turn and turn and wait breathlessly for that ice cream which seemed to take hours to get hard?
Our flavors were Vanilla and sometimes peaches or bananas were added.  What was your favorite flavor?

Every family gathering we had of my Dad's large family, we had 2 or more churns of ice cream.

the spoon is one of only very few items i kept. I keep only things I can use, not a collector gene in my body.

Well, that's a pretty cool item to have saved. We never had an ice cream churn. My favorite flavor has always been chocolate though. If not plain chocolate then some form of it.

That is a real treasure and something useful to have. We had an old ice cream churn at home...I was always the one who had to sit on it, while someone turned the crank (a cold job!) On Sun. nights at church during the summer, everyone would bring their churn and make diff. flavors of ice cream. Vanilla and peach were favorites but one lady always made scuppernong ice cream - very flavorful!

I was always so disappointed with ice cream churns. It sounded so fun but took so long. Maybe we didn't know what we were doing. Love that spoon.

Sibling family get togethers brought out my aunt and uncle's ice cream church. The uncles did the churning. The aunts did the serving and the kids observed and learned. Oh and playing; lots of playing.

Hello, I never used or seen a churn in my family. The vintage spoon is a wonderful thing to keep, a great memory of your family. I like vanilla and chocolate together. Happy Friday, enjoy your weekend!

OH MS I've never seen one quite like that. I love that you have it and shared it with us. I have some 'odd' pieces of utensils from the past but nothing like that. I have hubby's baby spoon.

Yes every family gathering I recall from early childhood had ice cream with a hand crank. I was a vanilla girl..kinda peculiar didn't like my ice cream to have anything in it. By the time the electric ice cream makers came in I had learned to love strawberry.
Thanks for the memories

Hi Sandra, that spoon is exquisite. No, I can't ever remember seeing churns in any family we knew when I was a child. And we didn't have one. Thanks for your comment on my post today. My heart soared when I saw : I've missed your beautiful face, then I realized you were talking about Skabenga! LOL! Have a great weekend. Jo

Sadly, we never experienced freshly churned ice cream. That spoon is a treasure and a useful one as well, but somehow shortening and ice cream don't seem to mix well (no pun intended).

That spoon is very cool. I grew up with a hand crank ice cream maker.Oh how exciting it was to turn that crank and wait for the special dessert.I now have a small electric one that is used occasionally.I still enjoy that ice cream but it is very rich.

OH YES...and I was so happy when the ice cream makers became electric!! We had vanilla, peach and banana like you said but I always made (when I go older) Milky Way Ice Cream.....oh my...so good.

I have one of these that my mother gave to me and my wife. She said that this was a free gift in believe it or not a box of oatmeal. You can look and see that the hole in the handle is actually a bottle opener.
