I say Coke, He says Soda

Sign on side of barn at Manatee Historical Village, archive 2007...  Share a memory from using Fountain Service, where and when.

My cousin Andrea and I, used to stop in the drug store when we got off the school bus and buy Cherry cokes and Chocolate cokes from the soda fountain, in 1959.

When I visited my grandmother here where I live now, she ALWAYS took us to Woolworth's Soda Fountain for burgers, fries and Fountain Cokes..

I say Coke, Bob says Soda, what do you call a fizzy drink?

Phil did not call them either of these! He called them soft drinks. I call them by their brand name. CHOCOLATE COKE?? Take me to it!! They still sell Cherry Coke here in the stores, but I have never heard of or seen chocolate. Coke has a new flavor now, orange vanilla. I bought a bottle, but then never drank it because of my diet. This reminded me, so Phil just brought me a glass; and yes, it is bedtime as well, oy. Tasting it now... I only took a couple sips and it is good. I miss the five and dime stores and lunch counters. Every year, Woolworth gets better in my memory. They say Dollar Stores have replaced them, but they just do not have the ambiance, and I know you will agree with this. Remember the candy counters in Woolwothhs where they would bag up and weigh the different bon bons?

Fizzy drink. "Coke" pertains only to Coca Cola - they've gone to court many times over the proprietary name! Of course, if you were referring to said brand, then Coke is fine. I hardly ever touch fizzy drink, and Coke, never. YAM xx

I live in the "pop" region. I used to work with a girl who came from Maine and we would debate whether it was pop or soda. We never did agree on that one.

My Mom always called it soda, my Dad used to call it sodie when I was a kid, though he says soda now.I call it soda. I still drink some soda each day, caffeine free, sugar free, but I also like milk, and very cold water.

Oh, I can't even imagine comparing Dollar Stores to the old Woolworths. I only had lunch at the Woolworth lunch counter a few times when I was a child. Woolworth was gone before I was an adult.

Here west of the Alleghenies we say 'pop'. Bob is obviously one of those 'eastern' Pennsylvanians---haha

It's funny, in my younger days I called them cokes....but when we moved to New Jersey when I was 10 or so, I started calling them sodas so I wouldn't get made fun of at school...and it's been soda ever since.

I say coke, or as Ginny says...whatever I am drinking. I used to drink Pepsi, then something happened to them and they lose their fizz so quick now. I buy coke all the time. But every now and then at this Mexican restaurant we used to go to...they had the best Pepsi...like it always used to be.

LOL LOL LOL this is too funny..
For years I would ask anyone if they wanted a drink. They would reply yes.
They knew what I meant. Now a drink is associated with alcohol. So I now say I have tea, coke, ginger ale and water would you like one?

Soda always first makes me think of baking soda or club soda.
Lots of transplants here ask for pop.

I guess I am truly a West Coast girl...I say Soda.
Don't really drink any soda, pop or coke any more.
Arrowhead Sparkling Water..orange or lemon flavor is my go to drink now.
Dog sitting our Granddogger Snicker today and tomorrow.
Even though she's 13 ish she is still like taking care of a toddler.
Right now she is in her favorite spot...on my feet under the table.
Pictures to follow later today.

We have always called it soda and we're both natives of NJ. The term "pop" may be a regional thing, but not sure. Funny thing is that whatever it's called, we hardly ever drink any these days.

COKE....all COKE! haha. Not soda and not pop! Did not realize that pop was used in so many states! That is neat.

For years, as I was growing up these were simply called drinks. Now I call them pop.

Like you, I'm in the "Coke" camp. (Even when I mean Dr. Pepper.)
Never have I ever experienced a real soda fountain. I've never heard of chocolate Coke -- is it good? I'm over here scratching my head, the same as when I saw chocolate wine.
Oh, I just remembered something we'd do as kids at the movie theatre. The only soda was from a machine. You know, where a little paper cup would drop down and you could push whatever button/flavor you fancied. We kids figured a way to push all 4 buttons simultaneously to get a mix. Probably tasted terrible, but we thought we were geniuses. Ha!

WOW! I'm really messed up because although I call them soda, I drank Cherry Cokes at the Woolworth's counter while enjoying a grilled cheese and fries!! Have a safe and Happy Fourth, Sandra!...:)jp

I say coke - even when I was in Chicago.
I remember Woolworth - and I used to get Vanilla in my Coke there for 5 cents.

Brand names are common here. Geinger ale is made by Canada Dry and is used for tummy upsets but many. Our fizzy drinks are mineral water, mostly San Pellegrino and sometimes Perrier.
I recall Woolworths counters. I also recall people knowing customers by name. I recall banks and doctor offices all knowing their clients, butchers and bakeries too. Those days are vanishing with computers replacing staff.
