Goodbye Hooty

Hooty is dead. My heart hurts.

One of our sweet owl couple is dead. My heart is broken for him and the one he left behind. I told their story in a prior post.

If you have been using rat poison, Please, Stop Now!
If you use rat poison, please, please stop Now!

A neighbor, we are not sure which one, has put out rat poison. In Florida our palms have tree rats, they harm no one, but do have to be trapped if they get in a house.

We know this because 2 weeks ago, we saw a half dead rat hanging upside down trying to get to water in the pool. He had been poisoned. My husband put him out of his misery. Poison not only causes them to suffer a horrifying  death, but anything that eats a poisoned rat died.

I found our sweet hoot owl in the rain barrel today... He had gone there to get water, the poisons causes hemorrhaging inside and makes them so thirsty they seek water and drown... I KNOW this is horrible but people need to know . I have argued with people in the store that I see them buying the poison. Rat poison should be against the law. It is not.

One rat can kill many birds, from buzzards to gulls and even raccoons and possums. if you buy POISON, PLEASE DON"T.

I'm so sorry... I love owls and we have a couple of tawny owls in our garage, therefore the roof has a hole so they can go in and out and the whole hood hates us for the noises... but I like them a lot and they have a home there, as long as they want.... our hearts are heavy that one of your neighbors acted so careless ;O(

I love owls. Using rat poison is an outrage. Can you find out which neighbor is doing this? How about posting an owl photo and your story of his death by rat poison on telephone poles, etc. in the neighborhood? Also post on nextdoor.com (it is good to join that group anyway).

Thanks for this alert. I would hate for any of our owls to meet such a fate. I have seen one only once since we moved here, but I hear them often.

I am sorry, poor Hooty. Yes, rat poison is awful, along with all the chemicals people put on their lawns to kill the weeds. We have had many Bald Eagles die from eating the poisoned critters, it is not just rats. RIP Hooty!

Oh, this is so sad. I love owls so much.
Poison is poison and doesn't discriminate where it goes.

Poor you ... I don't know what to write ... I'm so very sorry!
I also love owls! Here the rat poison is prohibited.
If you suffer from rats, special companies come to help, but those that do not work with the rat poison, are not allowed by the municipality.
RIP Hooty!

Poor Hooty. I'm so sorry especially as you found him. I was heart broken when our sweet pet cat was in a terrible state after drinking antifreeze from someone's leaking car, having fits and had to be put to sleep by the vet. There are irresponsible people around. I know how you feel. A horrible death for any animal I hope poor Hooty's partner stays safe.

When we had our allotment we had rats underneath of the shed. I loved them and often used to lay on the grass to take photo's of the babies peering out of the holes.
The man next door used to put down poison and Tom used to go and empty it when he was not around but it didn't save one magnificent rat who was staggering around our pond, it was truly awful to see.
What is wrong with people that they want to kill everything that doesn't agree with them, I get so angry.
It's funny but I was going to do a post on killing slugs and snails, this is the same thing, they die a horrible death.
Our little garden is full of slugs and snails as I cannot kill them, I just grow plants that they do not eat, simple.
So sad for you finding that poor little bird.

I'm actually glad you posted this because you needed to get it out there, to let people know the damage they do with poison. And I have learned that to share our sorrows helps us to feel better. I hope this worked for you.

Of course it will not help the owl that was left behind. That owl's sorrow will last for a lifetime.

This is AWFUL!!! We have never and would never use it, because I know what horrible death it causes. I would not even want a rat to suffer like that. People just don't THINK!

That is so sad. I've read about the dangers of rat poison before.

So sad to read this story, Sandra. Kudos to you for asking people to stop buying rat poison. Sadly, it will have little effect other than someone maybe wanting to hit you or say nasty words. No creature not even a rat should die such a horrifying way.
