The House That Burned

About 6 months ago, the house below, had a kitchen fire, it destroyed the roof and 1/2 the house. It has been sitting there for months causing much conversation is to what they would do, and why it sat there so long.
Last week we turned the corner and this is what we saw.
They took it down to three walls..
they are busy framing it today, Jan 17.

I said to Bob, we need to replace the fire extinguisher that is in the kitchen cabinet. It might be 10 years old.
He said, we have a fire extinguisher ? Why?
OMG OMD OMC
I said Can You Say KITCHEN FIRE???????

they did a little framing and added a room that wasn't there.
on the 22 and on the 25 they started a new roof.
The old roof was flat, this one is not.
Seems they are building a new home. Here we have a law you can not tear a house down and rebuild on the lost without a HUGE hassle. If you leave three walls standing you can do whatever you want on the same foot print and even add.
We wait...
Wonder why the builders look at me like I am crazy when I walk by every day and stop and stare and sometimes SNAP
I should stop and tell them, after we saw the house burned, I bought a new fire extingquiser for the kitchen. When I brought it in the house, Bob said, why did you buy that?

Well Duh! can you say KITCHEN FIRE burned the neighbors house down??? they were old like we are . Forgetful! Do you remember we are forgetful? Do you remember the house fire?

Golly, yes, that extinguisher is important - I have a fire blanket but not tube. Wonder if it is the same couple or if it has been sold on? will be interesting to see the finished product. YAM xx

So is this house on your block? Do the old couple still own the house, and is it them who are rebuilding it? They sure could not have sold it after it burned. Maybe their kids took it over?

I just saw the above comment wants to know the same thing that I do. Also, was anyone hurt in the fire? You have to post a follow-up with all our questions answered. If you don't know, you can ask the workmen... who is paying them!

We laughed and laughed at your last bit, and then thought 'hmmmm maybe we should get a kitchen fire extinguisher'. 😹😎

I don't cook on an open fire, I cook on an induction plate and I have the fire alarm everywhere!
Fire extinguishers also have a valid date, have you checked yours? In general, fire extinguishers for private use, such as in people's homes, should be replaced every five years. Fire extinguishers of three kilos or heavier, such as public fire extinguishers, last up to 20 years.

I'm wondering why property owners can't rebuild after a fire. ...the security of an extinguisher. But, little good it will do with a full-fledged fire.

That's interesting about the 3 walls. There have been some house fires around here and I don't think any of them had anything left standing to build off of.
I have all the same questions that everyone else has. Ginny had a good idea to do another post answering all the questions.

We live in a mini-Levitt town, a development that has only Levitt houses. So if your Levitt house burns down, you have to rebuild it so that it looks as much like the original Levitt house as possible. So far, we have had no kitchen fires, but we've ruined a few pots and pans.

I don't have an extinguisher, maybe I should get one too!

Fire and heights are both big fears of mine....
We have extinguishers that probably need replacing too.

How interesting about that law! For years now, Tom and I've commented on people buying places solely for the land and tearing down the existing structure.
Good point about getting the fire extinguisher. That's something we had to practice doing each year at the Legacy as part of annual safety training. Because Tom would most likely be the same way as Bob, I may just buy one and stick it under the kitchen sink.

Fires always scare me - we take our home for granted at times. Probably took a long time for insurance to settle.

We have a big fire extinguisher in the kitchen, courtesy of the management. They check it every year. Good for you for buying a new one.

What a terrible thing! Fires are very scary. Having had a near fire years ago I have four extinguishers around this house, two downstairs and two upstairs.

I'm sure insurance had a lot to do with the building delay. That's a strange law about the 3 sides of the house having to remain.
It took over a year and a half for the house behind us to begin renovation after their fire. And it took a long time for it to get built. Now it's all good and the neighborhood is happy again.
Good for you on the extinguisher You definitely see a need and go ahead and fill it.
You are always prepared for any problem.
Thanks for your comments about my Elder care yesterday. It was one of her better days for which I am grateful.

I think you need to get a press badge, and go by with the questions and have a note and pencil to jot down the answers...

That looks like a huge house. Yes a fire extinguisher and a smoke alarm are good to have..

Being married to an former fire fighter, I'd say...just go buy a new one (or TWO). That's an interesting law about re-building and it sure looks as if they will get a new home!!...jp

Is anyone else as nosey as Ginny above? Asking for a friend.

You were right to get a new fire extinguisher, Sandra, as agreed by my ex-firefighter husband. SOmehow, I knew about building in the same footprint if some walls were left standing. Looking forward to seeing more of this construction in time.

That's scary. I think our fire extinguishers are older too. I'm glad they are rebuilding.
