Sandra, I hate to do this to you but I am assured by my Irish friends that Shamrocks have three leaves - it was chosen (presumably by St Paddy himself) because the three leaves represent the Holy Trinity. Four leaf clovers are meant to be lucky and there is a saying about the luck of the Irish (which may have created the confusion), but a shamrock has three leaves. Enjoy your Irish part today. xxx F

I know I'm Irish. I was just posting genealogy stuff & the lady with 13 kids (on my blog) married a man from Dublin. A g-g-g-g-g grandfather. Long ago, I think Scotland was Irish territory? Maybe I'm just dreaming!!!

I once made a comment to a British professor that I was Irish/Scottish and English. His reply was you my dear are 100% So. American. LOL

I see Tigger spotted the common mistake, that clover is not shamrock, but it is at least green. (The 4-leaf thing is not particular to Ireland either.)
And Scotland was NEVER an 'Irish Territory' (per Anni); Dalriadha, the area mostly consisting of my home county of Argyll and Bute and a few small islands, was where some refugees from the island of Ireland came to settle and be free of the war between clans over there. The lead clan which settled was ... "Scott"... so the Picts, who were the earlier inhabitants and who called their land Alba, referred to the new arrivals' area as "Scott's Land"...
They brought their language - Gaelic - with them (it is not a 'place of origin') but it varied slightly in pronunciation. Here we call it 'gaahlic'.
As a point of interest, there was a reversal of settlement - The Plantation of Ulster was the organised colonisation by people from Scotland during the reign of King James I. ... They saw the plantation as a means of controlling and "civilising" Ulster. Plantation also happened in other areas of Ireland, from other parts of GB...

This was a lot of cheery fun! I'm a typical once-Brit, now American. Grandparents from each of the nations, English, Irish, Scots, Welsh! Grandmother from Tipperary. Can't get any Irisher than that.

Mark's here for 2 more days..got the safety bars in the bathroom for the time when Dave will come home.
It doesn't look like it will be this week..hoping for sometime next week. He wants to come home so bad but until mobility is better that won't happen. He hates that no one can visit and I do too. I really feel for those in nursing homes. Hope California opens up more..soon.

Well, it looks like you can take your pick as to what ancestry you want to boast (?) about... I'm very Swedish, several generations back, and most of my roots are even in the area where I live. My maternal grandfather came from far up north in Sweden, though.
I too don't Love the hat. and the band. have an ounce of iris in me but today I am wearing green. Love your post.

CheerfulMonk steered me here and I'm glad she did. Happy St. Patrick's Day! I thought I was some sort of British Isles ancestry for decades. Then I did the Ancestry thing and found out I am 75% Norwegian! My mother would be proud. Regardless, I had a dark beer today and saluted (slainted) the Irish.

Cheerful Monk also sent me here. As to history, I hate to bust everyone's bubble but green on St Paddy's Day is for Catholics. Us protestants need to be careful not to wear orange on this day, though. :)
